Area
Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.

Region
From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

We stayed here as a family of 3 for 1 week and must say it is a great gem and we wouldn’t hesitate to return. Covid has caused some changes and limitations in the holiday cottage industry but given the current circumstances it’s totally understandable, this is still a 5 star cottage, but you may need to buy a few additional items that are typically provided if you visit during these uncertain times. The cottage was immaculately cleaned, the kitchen has plenty of plates and cutlery etc which meant we didn’t have to switch the dishwasher on every day unlike some other cottages we have visited, we also made good use of the hot tub and the water was checked regularly during our stay to keep it clean and safe to use. The cottage is old and quirky but surprisingly big as it has been extended! There are plenty of places to walk from the cottage in all directions and we found the local tourist information very helpful, we walked 6-9 miles almost everyday! Emma was also very helpful suggesting local places to eat ahead of our visit so we could book in advance again due to covid. This is a great cottage in a very good location!

We stayed here this week for a birthday treat, the location is perfect for river walks and shopping in the lovely market town of Richmond. The owners were very friendly and helpful with what to do, see and where to eat in the local area. The hot tub was a brilliant touch and easy to use and keep warm! We arranged for a local beautician to come and do some treatments at the house which I would highly recommend! We would definitely stay here again and we are hoping to make it an annual trip!

We rented the Old Sunday School for a week in October 2018 and I would have no hesitation whatsoever in returning for another stay! It's an absolutely beautiful property in a lovely part of the world. Our hosts, Emma & Paul, were exceptional and we were warmly welcomed on our arrival. Both Emma and Paul were always on hand to provide advice, if needed, on places to visit and also on the local dining scene and they gave us some fabulous tips. If you have young ones a visit to The Forbidden Corner is a must and we also managed to arrange a horse riding trip as Emma's niece works at a nearby stable. The cottage is spacious and there was plenty of space for our party of five - three adults & two children -, is beautifully decorated and was warm and cosy. The cottage also has everything you could need for a really comfortable stay and it also goes without saying that the hot tub was an added bonus!! I have no doubt we will return in the not too distant future and I will definitely try the local delicacy recommended by Paul - a Lash Goshte - from Jacoubs on my next visit! Thanks again to Emma and Paul for being such wonderful hosts!

The owners Emma and Paul were really welcoming upon our arrival and provided lots of info and recommendation of things to do and places to visit during our stay.. The house was exceptionally clean and there were lots of personal touches, complimentary essentials (Prosecco, Bread, Milk, Washing up Liquid, Handwash), stacks of towels and games for the kids! The property is really geared up for small children especially with everything being on one level and our youngest loved it! The location is fantastic and there are loads of great family friendly pubs within walking distance. The only 2 things that I would say could be improved would be the water pressure at the kitchen sink but I think that may be to do with the location etc and also upgrade of the hot tub from a Lazy Spa to a solid unit. We had a really fantastic stay and would definitely recommend to family and friends.

We had a lovely, long weekend here and it was fantastic. I really can't fault the property at all, the location was lovely and the owners were so helpful. We have stayed in some amazing 5 star hotels all over the world and this property really rates up there in terms of comfort and quality. We will definitely return.

"Wow a little gem of a place" don't really want to tell you how good just in case we can never book again due to high demand The owners Emma and Paul and lovely little Harry could not of done enough for us, they went over the top with making us feel welcome, recommending places to eat and visit, Emma even called me on Friday evening after researching the most effective way of travelling for us a group of 6 to York on Saturday. The cottage has everything you need "home from home", couple of suggestions we made, Emma messaged the next day to say they had purchased them. Fantastic beds and bedding, towels supplied even for the hot tub The cottage is in a perfect location to walk to all the amenities, steep hills but definitely worth it once you arrive in the market place and the fantastic pub for Sunday roast "Holly Hill" again locals helpful explaining how to get to the old railway station with the micro brewery, ice cream parlour and local artists work There is not anything negative to say about this fantastic cottage ....... only that we will return and highly recommend Once again thank you Emma, Paul and Harry x

Before we arrived I spoke to the owner, Emma to request a highchair and cot.. She was so friendly and also very helpful, giving us information about good eating places, where we would need to book, leisure things in the area, etc. Also great advice about booking an online grocery delivery, and telling us the times she would be there, so she could accept it for us if it arrived before we did. Emma went above all our expectations, with her friendly, caring manner, also in providing toys and a swim float for our young, toddler grandson, .This was a great start to our mini break! We were exceptionally pleased with the cottage, which looked just like the pictures. It was very clean, with abundant supply of towels, glasses and kitchenware. This was great and meant the six adults could have a three course meal and have plenty of plates, dishes, etc. There was also enough places at the table and on the sofas in the two living areas, for us all to sit together, which isn't always the case in three bedroomed cottages, we have found. Emma popped in to see us to show us how things worked in the cottage and came to the rescue again with spare clothes for our grandson, who had been ill when we arrived. What a huge difference this kindness made and allowed us to get started in enjoying our family get-together break straightaway. Excellent and we would definitely book the Old Sunday School again!!

Just enjoyed a lovely week in this beautiful cottage, Richmond is a stunning place to stay with lovely river walks and plenty of things to do in the surrounding areas. This little gem of a cottage is a great base & very comfortable. Emma & Paul, the owners are very welcoming and add little extra touches like a welcome hamper on arrival. We have stayed in the dales many times but have fallen in love with Richmond. Highly recommend staying here.

The Old Sunday School was a lovely place to stay.. Well equipped and comfortable, great to have a bottle of prosecco waiting for us along with other supplies, milk, bread, butter, tea, coffee. Hot tub was a lovely way to relax in the evenings. Owners were very friendly and welcoming without being intrusive. Richmond is a really pleasant town, a short walk uphill. Lots of great places to eat, lovely walks along the river. Definitely want to go back there.

Great location in Richmond, such a pretty town with plenty of amenities. The house is decorated beautifully, in keeping with it's listed status. Very comfortable, and everything provided. The house is really clean and welcoming. Plenty of towels provided, which is great because there is a lovely hot tub. This was lovely to relax in after a day of beautiful walks, or cycling trips. The kitchen is well-stocked for cooking, but the local pubs do great food, and there are also take-aways nearby. It's an uphill walk into the town square, with plenty of shops etc. We were there the weekend of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race, and town was incredibly busy and full of life. There are many lovely walks nearby and also great cycle routes. The Dales are nearby, with stunning scenery. Emma and Paul are really welcoming and lovely hosts. I would happily go back and stay again! Really recommend this gem.

An absolutely beautiful, well-kept, and well-equipped property! It's only a short walk to the town centre and to the nearby river from the property so we didn't have to use the car all weekend and enjoyed exploring the area on foot. The owners had thought of everything - the cupboard stocked with board games was a particular hit with our 6 year old! We can't recommend it enough and we've already booked up for our next visit!

This extended terraced cottage is lovely and welcoming, well furnished and with the added bonus of a private hot tub in the enclosed inner courtyard. Lovely comfortable beds (one double and two king) made up with cotton sheets. Although the kitchen is very small, there is plenty of living and dining space. Lovely welcome from the owner, who showed us around and left an unexpected welcome hamper for us. This cottage is in a quiet location about 10 minutes walk from the town centre. Richmond is very hilly, so expect to climb wherever you go. The cottage itself is mostly on the level though, only one step into the sleeping areas, or out into the court yard. Parking is "on street" first come first served, but we had no problem getting parked near to the property. Would recommend.

I stayed here recently with a group of friends. The decor is clean, modern meets tradional. There is just about everything you could need while on holiday. The bedrooms are cosy and the whole place is spotless. The light airy dining area is great for gathering around for meals or just relaxing on the sofas. The pretty enclosed courtyard at the rear is great for outdoor entertaining or simply chilling out in the hot tub. It is approx 5-10 min walk up hill to the town, but taxis are available. There are lovely flat walks along the river nearby. The owners are very helpful and most welcoming. We would definitely return.

Just had a lovely weekend at this spacious, quiet, well equipped and very comfy property. There was plenty of room for 7 of us and we took full advantage of the sun and the lovely hot tub. Luxury!! The river walk is just around the corner and it's an easy stroll up to the market place. Richmond IS hilly but there are lots of taxis for anyone with walking difficulties..... Allessandros Italian in Queen's Road was gorgeous but v busy at weekends, so best to book. There are lots of takeaways if you don't want to cook. WiFi signal is good and the hamper left by Emma was a very nice touch. We will definitely be back! Angie B

If you're looking for a charming house, in a pretty market town, with the right amount of luxury to make a special occasion or a holiday truly superb then look no further. The property has something for everyone, a cosy living room with open fire for those cold winter months. A lovely outdoor space, with the added bonus of a hot tub, for summer days or nights, a party with friends or loved ones, somewhere for the kids to play, or somewhere to enjoy a glass or two on a summers day, this place is for you. Each bedroom has lovely comfortable beds with luxurious bed linen, two bathrooms - one with a bath, loads of towels and extra for the hot tub. There's a well equipped kitchen and a fantastic sitting come dining area, with enough space for large groups to enjoy a meal or watch television in absolute comfort. The place is also filled with period features and beautiful artwork. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and went the extra mile to make sure my friends and I celebrated a special Birthday in style. They were there to meet us on arrival and explained how to work all the gadgets etc. and were able to give us great recommendations for places to visit, eat and drink, and also at the end of the phone if we needed them for any reason. They left us a lovely hamper of goodies to get us started, we really couldn't ask for more!!! Richmond is also the perfect location, a good mix of shops, pubs and restaurants to suit every pocket. A place to go on lovely walks by the river, enjoy a picnic or sample the ice cream at the Old Station. Thanks again to the owners for making our stay so special and one that we'll alway remember!!!

Our accommodation was even more fabulous than the pictures and descriptions.. Beautiful. Clean. Cared for with a lot of time put into the small details that make a place really special. I had booked it as a celebration for a friend from America and she was blow away with how special it was. The Hosts were fabulous, friendly and welcoming. They met us as the property and gave a great tour of the accommodation and Richmond itself. The location is walkable into Richmond. I can't recommend this property and the hosts enough - I would most certainly go back there
