We had the most relaxing, restorative and refreshing week in Helen's Shepherd's hut.. It was scrupulously clean, with lovely hot shower. Helen went above and beyond in welcoming us to Northumberland and left a bottle of wine and basic food stuffs for us. We spent the week walking and hope to book again very soon.

We have just got back from one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever taken. The shepherds hut is in a wonderful location with panoramic views. The hosts gave us a really warm welcome and had left is a surprise of organic bread, local cheese, butter, scones, jam, eggs and wine. The hut is really well designed and equiped with everything we needed to a high standard. Even a telescope to view the amazing stars in this dark sky area. We will be back next year.

It was a peaceful place to be and with lovely view.. The hut was very cosy and well equipped and all you hear at night is the hooting of the owls in the trees nearby.

We had a wonderful welcome from the owners, who also left us bread, eggs, milk, wine, scones and butter.. The shepherds hut was very private with amazing views all round. It had everything available that we needed (and more!) Even a telescope to view the incredible night sky. We will be going back next year.

A wonderful establishment.. Peaceful location with an excellent view of trees, fields and hills (the only buildings you can see from the windows are miles away). The hut is clean, comfortable and well-equipped, and the owners are very friendly and welcoming. Listen to the local owls as you go to sleep!

Peaceful surroundings, super welcome pack including bread, scones, cheese, wine, eggs.. Spotlessly clean and has everything you need for a relaxing stay. The chairs were a little uncomfortable for long durations but the bed was super comfy. Really enjoyed our stay and would like to return later in the year to experience the dark sky’s.

We had an amazing time at Peat Gate Shepherds Hut - would definately recommend to anyone wanting a lovely, peaceful break away! Small, cozy and the bed is very comfortable!! Helen and Colin are friendly and left us a super bottle of wine, fresh bread and scones - lovely! Oh, and setting your clock to get up and watch the sunrise is a must, great view with top of the door open lying in bed watching it! We will return again as loved it!

The warm and friendly welcome from Mr and Mrs Summerbee, (plus the flowers, wine butter bread and eggs! ) despite us being about an hour late in arriving. Peat Gate is an excellent place to explore the border between Northumberland and Durham especially Hadrian's Wall and Haltwhistle is a little town which has everything you need on a self catering holiday and a good public transport centre if you don't want to be driving all the time. We spent all three days walking and found people friendly and helpful plus excellent facilities such as The Sill, the new visitor centre near the Wall and also the Milecastle Inn, also close to the Wall, where we had a very good roast Sunday lunch at a bargain price! Returning to the Shepherds Hut each evening was magical becasue it is so quiet and peaceful that we abandoned all ideas of listening to the radio and just sat and listened to curlews, owls, oystercatchers and the cries of many other birds. The Hut is a real Tardis - much bigger inside than it looks at first sight and very well equipped with high quality equipment and kept very clean and tidy. Yes, it's small, but it's all there and the layout has been carefully thought through and works very well indeed. We will certainly go there again and would recommend anyone who doesn't know the area and its people to give it a try - we are sure you won't be disappointed.

The shepherd's hut was so charming on the website - but in reality, it's even lovelier.. It's tiny, there's no denying that - but it's fully equipped, immaculately clean, well thought-out and the décor and general feel of the hut was homely and just right. The views from it, too, are superb - and it was a treat to sit in the doorstep in the early evenings with a glass of wine and a distant Hadrian's Wall, with the sheep and curlew for company … Thank you, too, to the owners for the goodies on arrival - the homemade bread and scones, the milk, eggs and bottle of wine. And for their hospitality and warmth throughout my stay, too. I couldn't have asked for a better break.

Peat Gate was so comfy and cosy, with all the facilities and more than expected in a hut! My Husband was a wee bit dubious at first, but Peat Gate was more luxurious than when we used to go camping! The treats Helen and Colin had put in the hut were absolutely fantastic and much appreciated! If you want an away from it all break, wonderful hosts and scenery, Peat Gate is just the place for you! There is so much to do in and around the hut. Lots of walks, Roman historical sites and a wee bit further afield we went to Cragside which was fantastic and worth the journey.

A fabulous base from which to explore the North or just relax and forget the pressures of the modern world. Wake to the sound of curlew & lapwing and look out over the stunning scenery and you could even be lucky enough for a deer to wander into the field. I couldn't be more pleased to have stumbled across the hut when looking at Youth Hostels etc in the area. It's a long way to come from Cornwall and it definitely made a great trip that little bit more special.

Peat Gate Shepherd's Hut provided us with exactly what we were looking for, a quiet base from which to explore the area away from, well everything.. Waking to the dawn chorus of more birds than you can mention, pheasant, lapwing, curlew just outside, deer down the valley and sheep for neighbours was just fabulous. The owners, just across the road if you should need anything, were lovely and full of local knowledge, there was a pack of information providing locations of nearby facilities and a multitude of ideas for discovering what the area has to offer and even wifi if you needed to investigate your options further!

This Shepherd's hut was a lovely place to stay.. It was very comfortable and cosy. It kept warm nicely with the electric heater and there is also a wood burner. It was well stocked and the bed was very comfortable. Lots of plug sockets and the shower was easy to use. It was nice that there was some food provided for me when I arrived (basics like bread, cheese, eggs and milk). There is a lot to do in the area so I was never bored - Roman forts, National Trusts place and a trip to Carlisle. I would definitely recommend!

We were greeted when we arrived, and were very impressed with the shepherds hut.. It was small (as expected), but very well provided with all we needed. The view was magnificent and the location perfect for visiting The Northumberland National Park, and other places of interest. One thing I would say, the information says the parking is 100yds from the hut which might put some people off, it is in fact much closer, about 20yds and very easily accessible. Overall we had a fabulous time and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

What a delight! Staying in the Shepherd's Hut has been the most relaxing holiday we've ever had! We were looking for something different and found it here. The hut exceeded our expectations. The kitchen is equipped with everything you would ever need. The owners, Mr and Mrs Summerbell are a lovely, friendly couple, and they seem to have thought of everything-we arrived to find bread, scones, butter, jam, milk, eggs and a delicious bottle of wine!. The scenery is amazing! It was so quiet-just us and nature-we woke up one morning to find two deer in the field. Many thanks. We will be back!

August 2016
Wow what can we say we had absolutely brilliant holiday in this charming shepherds hut.. The facilities were excellent ,the hosts most welcoming and beautiful rural location bit close enough to towns and attractions such as Hadrian's Wall, Vindolanda, Housesteads and the Twice Brewed inn where the cod is exceptional. We had a most pleasant stay in this chain shepherds hut that even has a telescope to look at the dark skies of Northumberland. Highly recommended and wull most certainly be returning. Thank you Sarah and Karl

August 2016
Apart from the weather! !!! it was just the relaxing holiday we needed, Helen and Colin could not have been more helpful to us, only one very little niggle we couldn't get hot water from the sink taps or wash room taps, but just boiled the kettle and used that. Did not spoil the holiday, only the weather did that. But the vista's made up for that. Have been caravan users for years and there were things in the hut that we never have thought about taking with us in our van. So well done to Helen and Colin, and thank you.
