We've just spent a wonderful week at Crescent Cottage, Haltwhistle. The cottage was beautiful and we didn't want for anything. Sue, the owner, was very welcoming and gave us lots of useful information about the area and visitor attractions. Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum is well worth a visit and is only a short drive away. The train stn is a 5 min walk away with easy access to both Carlisle and Newcastle. Would definitely recommend Crescent Cottage and would love to come back again in the future.

A very lovely cottage, it had all the facilities we needed.. The hosts were very welcoming and helpfully telling us about the facilities and attractions in the area. We had a great time visiting the many roman sites in the area. By the end of the break we can honestly say we were 'romaned out'.

Crescent Cottage is very comfortable and an excellent base for exploring Hadrian’s Wall.. It is well equipped and Sue is handy for advice and help with the local area. We would highly recommend Crescent Cottage and our high score for its facilities reflects our satisfaction. However, Sykes Cottages scores very poorly. This has nothing to do with the rental process, which worked well, or the cottage itself, which was very good indeed; it has everything to do with the raft of unsolicited and unwanted emails exhorting us to book further cottage holidays. In the end the computer-generated blizzard of advertisements has proved counterproductive and we will be unsubscribing from Sykes Cottages’ mailing list. To reiterate, we only have positive and appreciative things to say about Crescent Cottage and are grateful to Sue for helping to make our stay a happy and comfortable one.

We had a fabulous time in Crescent Cottage.. It is warm and cosy and we looked forward to returning there at the end of each day. The location is very convenient: an easy walk to Haltwhistle Burn and the Wall and also just a couple of minutes from shops and pubs. The owners, Sue and Nick, are charming and welcoming. They couldn't have been more helpful and were a joy to meet. The surrounding countryside is stunning and the history, of course, fascinating. We chose this cottage because of the glowing reviews. Now it's our turn to add yet another one to the list!

The cottage was lovely: comfortable, cosy, beautifully decorated, spacious and perfectly equipped.. Nick and Sue, the owners, who live next door, were very kind and friendly (fresh flowers and delicious coffee cake to welcome us!) and helpful giving us a lift from and to the station (which is in fact not at all far away, but after the two-day journey by train and ship from Germany, we were very grateful)! Highly recommendable cottage in a great locaton: everything you need just around the corner and excellent for walking and hiking, too: beautiful walks at lovely South Tyne Valley and Haltwhistle Burn Gorge. We did have a wonderful time at Crescent Cottage! Thank you so much, Sue and Nick! Danke schön!

June 2018
Very comfortable clean quiet cottage, the owners were there on our arrival and explained all that we needed to know with regards to the cottage and facilities we might need in town.. It was also nice to have the use of a garage for our car enabling us to forget it and enjoy the lovely walks close by and the use of a regular bus service or train service to pretty much wherever your compass might lead you. The cottage, the owners, the town and area we can highly recommend, we had a brilliant holiday.

A very pretty, well-equipped cottage, with little extras that are most helpful, such as condiments, kitchen roll, books, games and puzzles, and lots of local information, plus home-made cake and fresh garden flowers to welcome us.. The furnishings are very good and decor is tasteful, and it is a surprisingly peaceful location, as well as close to the town centre and many lovely walks. We had a very good holiday there.

The cottage was even better than we expected.. One of the best we’ve ever stayed in. Excellent facilities and owner was friendly, helpful, welcoming yet not intrusive. We definitely hope to go back. Location is superb.

March 2018
Great location and the cottage was fantastic.. The upside down living really worked well. Great to have a garage to put bikes and bike rack when not in use. The local shops where only 1 minute walk, but with a 3 minute walk you are in the countryside and walking by a river. Owner was very helpfull with local info. Haltwhistle is great central location for Kielder, the moors, or the east or west coast.

We made our 6th visit to Crescent Cottage in August and had a lovely peaceful holiday, even the weather was with us this time. Perfect location for walks to Hadrian's Wall. Lots of good places in Haltwhistle and nearby to eat and drink. Always receive such a good welcome back from Sue & Nick.

October 2017
The cottage itself was charming on first view and very comfortable, clean and welcoming.. Our hosts, Sue and Nick were very welcoming, friendly and charming with lots of knowledge about the surrounding area. The cottage contained more than expected, with games, movies and books for those quiet moments and lots of information on local attractions which proved to be very useful. Upon arrival a welcome cake was waiting with tea and coffee materials to hand to ease our way into the stay. There is so much to see and do in the area coving historic monuments, walking, cycling, swimming and night out to name but a few. Haltwhistle is just about centre to most locations in the North and a short drive can take you from Newcastle to Carlisle, Cumbria to Scotland a great touring starting point. I would heartily recommend this charming cottage to anyone wanting to visit the North and will look forward to returning in the future

Loved this quirky upside-down house, with its friendly hosts. It's a two minute walk into town, which has plenty of pubs (recommend the Black Bull) and eateries, and a two minute walk to Sainsbury. The two and a half mile walk along the Haltwhistle Burn is beautiful (and flat) and from there is a short walk across a field and down the road to 'Cawfields' where you can join the walk along Hadrian's wall (definitely not flat). The house is well equipped and very comfy, so we enjoyed relaxing evenings after our days out exploring.

A very comfortable cottage! A living room upstairs, kitchen and bathroom reached through the living room. A sturdy handrail in the stairs. A very good place for exploring Hadrian´s wall as most places are at a maximum of 30 minutes drive away. We also got as far as to Wall´s End in the east and to Maryport in the West in an hour. The cottage lies close to shops in Haltwhistle. Many thanks for the welcome and advice we got from Sue!

June 2017
Really enjoyed our week at Crescent Cottage. We had a warm week and the upside down cottage meant that the bedrooms were cooler and a good nights sleep assured in a bed with a great mattress. The cottage was immaculate and very well equipped. Lovely outdoor sitting area overlooking the owners pretty garden. The owners were very welcoming and there was a cake and some milk waiting for us. We will be back - we loved it!!!! Great walking at Hadrian's Wall with an excellent local bus service to several locations along the wall. Haltwhistle has a number of pubs and restaurants as well as local shops and a couple of Supermarkets.

April 2017
Such a lovely cottage in Haltwhistle and much more spacious than expected.. A very characterful upside down cottage with everything we needed and more. Sue was absolutely lovely. Milk, homemade scones and jam were waiting for us, plus an Easter egg for our son. Haltwhistle is a lovely village with shops and pubs on the doorstep, plus lovely walks. Lots of places to visit, just a short drive away. Perfect for families and couples alike. Thank you for a great holiday.

October 2016
Firstly Haltwhistle is a pleasant surprise with good shopping, eating and drinking facilities...in fact just about everything you could need with two supermarkets, pubs, food and takeaways. There is also a railway with a regular train service!! The area has gorgeous scenery with historical sites and towns and superb walking country. Hexham, a short drive to the east is well worth a visit with its abbey, theatre and larger shops. In all the cottage, Haltwhistle and the area make an excellent package and having sampled it we will be back for more.

We have just returned from our 5th visit to stay at this lovely peaceful cottage. It is perfectly located for visits and walks along Hadrians Wall. We have always received a very warm welcome from Sue & Nick, who have a wealth of knowledge about the local area and places to visit, and recommendations on where to eat. This will certainly not be our last visit!!

Excellent location, very convenient for town, Hadrians Wall and beautiful Northumberland countryside. Very comfortable and spacious cottage. Simply can not fault the cottage and service of the owners. Spotless and exceedingly comfortable. We used the cottage as a base for walking Hadrian's wall and cycling. It's location was perfect. Lots of places to eat locally and plenty of shops to cater for yourself within walking distance. Yet it was an oasis of calm. Can't recommend highly enough. The Dewars of the Rogers and Dewar clans.

Crescent Cottage is situated in the centre of Haltwistle, which has everything you'll need, plus an excellent pub. The cottage is ideally placed for exploring Hadrian's Wall and is clean, quirky and full of character. The owners were very nice and gave us a warm welcome.

November 2015
A fantastic cottage run by a very helpful and friendly host. Personally we felt the cottage was perfect for a holiday in the UK in November when the weather is cold and wet. Providing a washer and dryer made life so much more comfortable as we were out every day either mountain biking or walking. Also, even though the cottage is in the town it was so quiet.
Mrs Midwinter

The cottage was much bigger than it appeared on the outside. It was a really lovely bright, warm, comfortable place and really close to all amenities yet lovely and peaceful. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and provided loads of really useful information. The weather was fantastic over the Easter weekend which was a bonus and everywhere we went people were really helpful and friendly. The holiday was absolutely perfect.

Sue and Nick gave us a very warm welcome and were very helpful. Nick told us a lot about Haltwhistle and surroundings. Sue baked us a delicious chocolat cake and there were fresh flowers in the living room of the cottage to welcome us! The cottage is very clean (we love that!) and had all the creatures comfort. Books to read and lots of leaflets with information about interesting places to visit are availlable in the cottage. All so well taken care of. A joy to stay in! Just around the corner there is a supermarket. In the cottage all you need to prepare a wonderful meal. And if you do not feel like cooking there are other possibilities nearby also for Take In Meals. Haltwhistle an ideal place to start exploring Hadrian's wall. A lot of very interesting places nearby. We had a wonderful time in Crescent Cottage!

September 2014
The location was great for seeing Hadrian's Wall sites. Plenty of shops in the village for everyday needs as well as takeaways. Good pub food at the Black Bull. The house was clean and comfortable, a real home-from-home. Easily the best holiday cottage we have stayed in. The owners were friendly and helpful.
Mrs Rittenhouse
August 2014
Definitely the best rental property we have ever used. The house was immaculate but also very comfortable and cosy. Perfect for a family to enjoy. The garden was just lovely and the owner makes you feel very much at home. The village was also ideal for a holiday spot; very small but with two butchers, grocery stores, pubs so everything available and within walking distance. Beautiful spot in rural England that we would highly recommend to anyone!

I was unfortunate enough to be ill whilst on holiday this year. However, if one had to be ill on holiday Crescent Cottage was the place!! All the home comforts, always warm, in spite of windy, rainy weather. The owner, who lived next door could not have been more helpful. The location was great for seeing the Hadrian Wall sites and local buses and trains travelled from Carlisle to Newcastle via the town. Plenty of shops for everyday needs as well as many eating/takeaway places.

We were made very welcome by the owners who could not have been more helpful and charming. Good local amenities, plus a terrace overlooking a wonderful garden and lots of nice big sofas for relaxing in the evening! We would highly recommend Crescent Cottage and we hope to be going back as soon as we can escape again!

My family thought this was a lovely cottage to spend a week in. The upstairs living space was great - very comfortable and spacious. The village was nice with a decent pub, chippy and a supermarket close to the cottage. There was also indoor play area for the children on a rainy day. Hadrians wall was just a few minutes away by car - and we also enjoyed a day in Carlisle. We enjoyed meals at Twice Brewed and the Milecastle.

I've stayed in Crescent Cottage a number of times, usually with only my husband, but once with my parents and daughters. Each time I go back it feels like home from the first moment. It's really comfortable and clean, with a great kitchen with a drying rack - very useful if you've been out walking in the rain. There's a very pleasant view over the garden from the window. The cottage is right in the middle of Haltwhistle within easy walking distance of local pubs, takeaways, shops etc. It's a perfect base to explore the wonderful countryside and Hadrian's Wall. Totally recommended!

We parked the car on the day we arrived and did not use it again until we went home. Great walking straight from the door to Hadrian's wall. We used the train to visit Newcastle and Carlisle. The cottage was warm and cosy. The town location was great, but it was very quiet. Shops, takeaways and pubs all just minutes walk away. We had a great week and would love to return.

All four of us were thrilled with the cottage and the amenities provided by the hosts. The cake and flowers provided by the hosts were a nice touch and much appreciated. December 2009
The owners were on hand to welcome us and for any queries but never intrusive. The cottage was warm, spacious and well equipped with an attractive outdoor seating area for warmer periods of the year. The location was great - quiet but close to the facilities of the town which include a Tesco store, good range of other shops, pubs, take-aways and places to eat out. We were walking Hadrian's Wall in day stages over our week and chose Haltwhistle for the transport links because it is on the railway line and also served by the AD122 seasonal bus that calls at points along the wall.

December 2009
The cottage is situated next door to the house of the owners who were friendly and made us welcome. Upstairs is a large, light and pleasant living room, a nice bathroom and a well equipped kitchen. There is also a terrace overlooking the owners' beautiful garden. The only drawback is that, because the cottage is built on a sloping site, the bedrooms are downstairs and built into the hill, with the result that they are a little darker than we would have liked. The location is good, quite close to the centre of Haltwhistle but on a quiet street. Haltwhistle itself is pleasant, although a little underwhelming, but the nearby countryside and Hadrian's Wall are wonderful.

Our objective for the week was to walk the Hadrian's Wall Path. This cottage was a wonderful base, warm, comfortable , close to transport links and amenities. A car is not essential. The owners are at hand if needed but never intrusive. We would highly recommend.

The cottage was great and the holiday went very well. The value for money was far greater than 2 nights at a BB. The owner made us feel very welcome which was very pleasing.

The cottage was excellent throughout and we felt instantly at home. The area itself was wonderful with plenty of excellent walks and things to do both close to the cottage and further afield. We couldn't fault it and to be honest were sorry to have to come home after such a wonderful time

In some twenty years of renting self catered accommodation this was without doubt the cleanest, best presented property we have visited. We appreciated the chance to receive some guidance to the area from real people rather than just from a folder full of leaflets. Five star chocolate cake too!
Mr Halck

June 2007
The owners greeted us warmly: nothing was too much trouble. We were given a guided tour of the property and invited to contact them should there be any problems or any queries. The property is full of history and character and a very well thought out conversion. It is cosy and - in spite of it being a really cold June week - our limited times indoors were very comfortable. The property's location in Haltwhistle is ideal for exploring a fascinating and beautiful part of Northumbria.
Mr Cruickshank

Sykes cottages are always of a very high standard, but this one far exceeded even those expectations. The owners were extremely friendly and welcoming, the cottage was fabulous and the extra touches of milk, a cake, fresh flowers, tea, coffee and a TV magazine were very much appreciated. We would have no hesitation in highly recommending this cottage. We had a wonderful holiday and would certainly go back.

September 2005
Crescent Cottage was perfect for us - in town, but quiet, near to all the shops and the Black Bull Pub. The owner met us at the train station, brought us to the cottage, and settled us most comfortably. She provided a warm welcome and food essentials. Haltwhistle is an excellent site for walking. We also joined the Haltwhistle Wednesday walkers for one of their local walks. I hope to return to Haltwhistle for the Walking Festival. if I do, Crescent Cottage would be my first choice.
Mr Percy

The cottage was as Excellent as mentioned. The hosts were most helpful and took the time to advise on not only the cottage but the surrounding area and attractions. They took great pride in the presentation of their very clean and comfortable cottage but also the outstanding countryside which can be explored at length.

I would like to say a big thank you to the owners. On our arrival there was milk in the fridge, a cake and tea and coffee available, which after a long drive was very much appreciated. The cottage could not have been better and the information pack provided was simple to understand and very informative. It made planning the next days activities very easy. We met the owners a few times and they very much helped us get the most out of the area with their suggestions. So all in all we could not be more happy with the service that Sykes provided and the lovely cottage, welcome and advice from the owners. Thanks all for helping to make it a very enjoyable holiday!
