Location was perfect for peace & quiet would not change a thing .. The walking was superb, you could walk from the door without ever using the car, the coastal paths only an hours drive away, if you wanted a change it was not a problem . Only thing to say was be aware that the nearest town for a big shop was a 40min drive away so stock up well for the week .

The cottage was in an idyllic location, perfect for our holiday with friends and their dog.. Lovely walks on the door step, and a fabulous gastro pub within a few hundred yards. The cottage was spacious, light, clean, fully appointed, and comfortable. WiFi was a bonus. Everything we needed was there, and some lovely extra touches, such as nice liquid soap in all the bathrooms. Couldn’t have asked for better.

Loved the house , its situation and garden.. So near to some lovely walks and busy stables. Concerned that the house took a lot of warming when we arrived. I felt it should be warm with heating actually on, especially in March. I had to rummage around and hit the ch override. Small things, no kindling (provided later), no paper towels and napkins. Otherwise lovely. What a place to stay.

Shabby and outdated. Shower fittings missing from master bathroom meaning not possible to have a shower. Ground floor shower is in a WC and doors do not close allowing water to leak all over the WC floor. No extractor hood or fan over cooker so when cooking all steam from cooking fills kitchen and dining room. Top floor bedroom had insect infestation from hundreds of flies behind window blinds. Opened the blinds, insects filled the room. Stable block next to cottage that houses trail hounds that howl at night and keep you awake. We left the cottage three days early due to insects and no shower available. We read the visitors book whilst there, if only we could have read it before. Very poor indeed.

Barn Cottage is a warm and comfortable cottage ideally placed for those who like long or short walks.. We recommend that you follow the directions issued by Helpful Holidays otherwise you may find yourself thwarted by the ford at Tarr Steps only 5 minutes from the Cottage.

There was not a functioning shower in the property, shower hose in bathroom missing from bathroom, shower hose in other bathroom has no fitting to hand from wall, downstairs shower in WC has non closing doors that leak water if used.. Tap in bathroom won’t shut off, top floor of cottage has serious amount of flies/insects flying around in bathroom and bedrooms. Outside light permanently on not allowing for night time sky viewing (Main reason for our booking) trail hounds kept in stable block adjacent to property that howl and wail at night keeping you awake. We left the cottage three days early as had enough. Will not use again. Dated, worn, poorly equipped and shabby. The location is perfect, that is the ONLY upside but sadly not enough. ****Owner response**** Your feedback on the showers was very useful and we are sorry as it should have been spotted and repaired before your stay. We are glad to report that the showers have now been fixed, and are fully functioning. We are also sorry that you did not let us know about the broken tap: our very competent onsite caretaker was able to fix the tap in five minutes once notified of the problem. The attic had been left clean and spotless. We are however fortunate to live in an area of outstanding natural beauty with a fabulous abundance of insect life. The flies hide away in autumn and when there is a sunny warm day they appear from nowhere. It is however easy to get rid of them by opening a window. The outside light has been adjusted and is now on a short timer so that it only comes on briefly to help guests arriving or leaving. We are glad to know that you and your dog enjoyed playing with the hound puppies, and really sorry that you didn’t let Danielle know that the puppies’ yelps had kept you awake. Further renovations and redecoration are planned for the winter months to ensure Barn Cottage is looking its best for 2019.

This could be a lovely cottage however, some of it is tired and neglected.. For example, water damaged wood panelling, stained and split kitchen lino. The front door frame was splintered by the top hinge, which could have caused a big problem. We tried to use the other door instead but the handle was broken therefore it could only be locked from the inside. We reported the split door frame first thing on Monday, as soon as we realised why the door was sagging, and this was atttended to as we were leaving. We wanted to use the payphone during our stay but it did not work and we reported this also. Other people had commented in the visitors book that the TV remote does not match the TV so does not work completely. The WiFi connection is intermittent. However, the kitchen is well equipped, the cottage characterful and the location idyllic. ****Owner response**** Thank you for your feedback. We entirely agree with you - Barn Cottage is lovely and characterful, the location is idyllic, and some TLC and maintenance is overdue! The downside to our idyllic, West Country location is slower and occasionally intermittent WIFI. We have however repaired the damaged panelling and front door, and renewed the lino on the kitchen floor. There are new handles on the front door, the landline has been checked, and the new remote works perfectly with the TV. We look forward to welcoming you back to beautiful Barn Cottage.

We arrived to find the Cottage warm and welcoming on a cold January day. My husband & I stayed for a week, while friends came down for a couple of days. The cottage had everything you required from the lovely hot water, to all the cooking utensils and facilities you needed throughout the cottage ( A true home from home). Tarr Steps was only a few yards away, along with plenty of good walking from the doorstep. The cottage and facilities were all Perfect. Thank you.

I booked this house for seven of us as a relaxing family break and it was the perfect spot, plenty of sapce downstairs, all open plan so no one ever felt cut off. The bedrooms were lovely, clean and spacious and very comfy, the two at the top were great for the kids but did get very warm. There are plenty of bathrooms and towels are provided and the facilities were great, dishwasher, washer and dryer so if you get muddy days you can just bung the lot in.The area is very beautiful but very remote, make sure to take all supplies with you because there are no shops in walking distance and the roads are mostly one car width so not good for nervous drivers. We spent a good amount of time in the Tarr Farm in across the river, a five minute walk from the house, excellent food and cream tea, the beer and cider went down very well. We made a few trips out including a road trip to Stonehenge and Glastonbury, two hours to Stonehenge but our fabourite was Dunster, a thirty/forty minute trip to the coast. The town itself is very pretty but the castle was a highlight. The only complaint would be that there was no welcome pack in the house when we arrived, I wouldn't expect champagne and caviar but a bottle of milk and a little loaf would have been nice. We do tend to pack for an apocolypse when we go but we didn't take sugar with us because I've never stayed anywhere where the basics weren't already in place but there was nothing in the cupboards except salt and a few tea bags so go prepared. All in all a lovely house and an exceptional place, we loved Exmoor.
