Property Description

Holiday home
This cottage began life as a stone-built hayloft in the 18th Century. It has been lovingly restored and converted to provide charming, contemporary accommodation. The living space is arranged over one level and in an open-plan style. For the winter months, the owners have installed storage heaters and a wood-burning stove, which provides a romantic ambience as well making the property cosy and snug. For the summer evenings and a spot of outdoor dining there is a small patio-garden, complete with garden furniture. There is off-road parking for one car, and the local pub is only two minutes walk away.

Accomodation Details
All first floor. One double bedroom. Bathroom with bath with shower over, basin and WC. Open plan living area with fitted kitchen, dining area and sitting area with woodburningstove.

Area
Situated on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, the small village of Lastingham has a unique and fascinating history. A monastery was founded in 654 by St Cedd and flourished until the Danes destroyed it in the 9th century. In 1078, Stephen, the Abbot of Whitby, persuaded William I to restore Lastingham. However, Stephen and his monks left abruptly to set up a new monastery in York, leaving only the crypt and the apse of the church complete. Amazingly, the crypt has survived unaltered over the centuries. Local attractions include the North Yorkshire Moors, Pickering Castle, the Wheeldale Roman Road and the Rievaulx Terrace and Temples. For lovers of the Great Outdoors, there are plenty of beautiful and scenic walks leading directly from the village.

Region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

Amenities
Storage heaters with woodburning stove in living area. Electric hob, dual oven (microwave, grill and oven), fridge, combi TV/DVD, CD player/radio, WiFi. All fuel and power inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Off road parking for 1 car. Small patio with garden furniture and BBQ. Sorry, no pets and no smoking. Shop 2 miles, pub 2 mins walk. Note: Property not suitable for babies or children. Note: Use of owner's laundry facilities available. Note: This owner also has property 'Beckside' which is under reference - 1293.

We stayed here in September. What an amazing find. Cottage was lovely. Had everything we need and a bottle of wine was there on arrival, lovely touch. Lastingham is a quiet village but the setting, people and pub make it a lovely place to be. We had a great time and will definitely be back!!

The hayloft in lastingham is a great place to stay for a holiday on the Yorkshire moors, Alan made us feel very welcome and was on hand if we needed anything, the views and the village were to die for and was very quiet and peaceful, the local pub had fantastic food and drink and comes highly recommend, I will certainly be visiting the hayloft again next year and thank you sykes for helping me find the hayloft.. Ideal for two people provided they can still manage stairs.. It is fitted out most comfortably and the only difficulty we had was using the combination microwave/ grill /oven which required delving into the instructions in some depth. The area in which the Hayloft is situated is stunning with good local eating places although the nearest shop is some 15 minutes drive. The owners were most helpful and considerate..Certainly a place we would consider staying again.

The Hayloft is a cosy apartment equipped with everything you need.. I was pleased that they have free wifi as I was unable to get a phone signal in the village but could stay in touch with family via email and What'sApp.

The Hayloft is a cosy, well-equipped cottage in the lovely, peaceful village of Lastingham.. There are print-outs of walking routes in the cottage and some lovely walks right from the door, or a just short drive away. A traditional, friendly village pub round the corner serves very good food.
Mrs Furness

The only thing lacking we felt was a proper oven.. There was only a combination microwave and oven. Otherwise The Hayloft met all our needs. A very peaceful and relaxing location.

We absolutely loved our 3 days in this beautiful, cosy Hayloft! In fact we didn't go outside for 3 whole days, other than a trip to the gorgeous mega friendly, welcoming pub around the corner. This Hayloft is so comfortable, warm, cosy and has everything you need! We especially loved Whally the stove, such a lovely humouras note about his use and care from the owners! Our time here was so cosy and romantic! The village of Lastingham is a true hidden gem that we would return to again and again! One of the most special places we've ever stayed! Thank you so much for making such a magical place for others to enjoy! We'll definitely recommend and revisit! X

The cottage was as described on the website.. It is compact, comfortable and well decorated. Lastingham is a very attractive village. The pub is close and very good for food (bring a torch if you are coming in winter as there are no street lights!). Great walking area.

Disappointed with mismatched glass ware.. Odd wine glasses and tumblers let down the luxurious impression of the property.

This is a lovely peaceful and safe little hideaway with beautiful veiws and wonderfull walks nearby and on the moors which we really enjoyed, tastefully decorated very cosy and safe with off road parking, the owners are there if you need them just a knock away, the bottle off wine a lovely touch thankyou, if you are against the cruelty of down and feather bedding as I am or simply allergic then bring your own bedding ad I did, there is no phone signal whatsoever and Internet bad as well, not that we bother when on holiday but it's handy to keep in touch with family ect, a lamp would be nice in sitting area as overhead lights harsh at night, we brought the bedroom one in, would recommend this place as it's ideal for walkers and peace seekers and those in love with nature ect

The Hayloft was brilliant. There's something great about a cosy place where you've got a wood burner going at night, hot chocolate on the go, and the rain battering outside. There's a beck running next to the drive, and sheep over the other bank. Just a really chilled romantic rural place for two.

July 2014
Lastingham is a quiet, old village on the edge of the N.York moors and the beautiful Dales and hills. We have been in the area before, but now we aren't walking them as we used to, unfortunately. So were really pleased we could still find interesting and very attractive places to visit, and to shop in lovely old and unspoilt Kirbymoorside. The village pub was superb for its cooking and very friendly hospitality. Together with the excellent Hayloft and its owners, it has been a very welcome and satisfactory discovery! We plan to return and will tell our friends about it too.
Mr Wilson
March 2014
We were returning to a property we had previously stayed at, we had been impressed the first time so had returned. The property is perfectly formed for 2, containing everything we needed for a good holiday. It is sited perfectly for many walks from a lovely village and only a short drive away from larger places to explore. All in all, we found our weeks break was very enjoyable and it is a place which we will return to.
Mrs King
January 2014
The accommodation was great, very clean and decorated to an excellent standard. The bottle of wine left for us was a very nice thought. The Hayloft is excellently situated in a lovely village and a lot of walks are in close proximity and very accessible. With its wood burner, The Hayloft was lovely and cosy and had everything that we needed.

October 2013
The accommodation was excellent, very warm and cosy, with everything we needed which was nice to return to after sightseeing around the area. The owners were unobtrusive, but if we needed them they were close by. The location was very central for us, with lots of lovely scenery and walks close by. All in all it was a very relaxing break one which we shall be returning to in the very near future. We are not usually smitten with our holidays, like we have been this time.
Mr Baddeley

The decor and attention to detail in the property is very tasteful and in such a cold week the cottage was exceptionally cosy. So warm in fact that we didn't really need to use the wood burning stove.

April 2013
The village of Lastingham is a hidden gem in the North York Moors. A lovely quiet village with an old church 'St Mary' with the 'The Blacksmiths Arms' opposite. All thats missing is a cricket pitch and village pond! The graveyard is fascinating and it was good to see the church is being used for what it was built for - Christian worship. The fairly recently renovated 'The Hayloft' was lovely accommodation to stay in, best described as cosy. Mrs Eros and I stayed there at the start of an unseasonably cold April with biting east wind and the warm of 'The Hayloft' was a joy to retire to after a day walking on the moors. The premises are very tastefully done with a log burning stove giving off great heat. We loved the magnificent hand-crafted artwork on one of the bedroom walls. Kitchen and bathroom have all mod cons. The front door looks out on a beck (small river or burn) with a good view to the forested hillside on the south side of the village. The bottle of wine awaiting our arrival was a nice touch and greatly appreciated. Hope to return.
Mrs Taylor
January 2013
The chance to unwind in very well appointed accommodation, from the very warm welcome by the owners to the great atmosphere created by the locals in the pub, it was a winter break. The star of the show was the log burning stove in the corner. Fantastic.

My wife and I wanted a base from which to explore the area and this was ideal. Clean and well furnished with a well equipped kitchen for self-catering. The bed was very good and there was plenty of hot water for showers etc. There was a dedicated off street parking space protected by a gate but we were able to come and go as we pleased, including slipping out for dawn photography.

We stayed at the Hayloft for a week over Xmas 2009 and had a brilliant time ! The hosts were most welcoming and extremely helpful . We had 6 inches of snow which created a Nardiaesque theme , we went Tabogganing on the nearby slopes and it was exhilarating to return to the Hayloft and stoke up the log burning fire ! We made excursions to other villages through the snow , these made for some picturesue photo opportunities which we are sure will be just as pretty at any other time of year ! The local pub is an absolute joy and must to visit providing excellent and varied fare ! In conclusion , a stay at the Hayloft is highly recommended for a total ' Chillax ' break or weekend . The highlight for us was being able to come in from the winter chill and relax infront of the log burner ! it so added to the ambience of an already fantastic getaway location !

We were greeted when we arrived and was shown round the cottage, we were very impressed. The cottage was very clean and well equipped, it had everything we needed in fact it was almost home from home. The cottage was in a very quiet village, the local pub was a 2min. walk. We shopped in the local town about 10 mins. drive. The walking was good but unfortunately the weather wasn't the best to do a lot of walking (not the fault of Sykes's) In all a very enjoyable Cottage & location. Would defiantly go back again.

December 2009
The cottage was absolutely beautiful, once we lit the woodburner the whole place was toastie and warm. We took mountain bikes and cycled from the door every day. We ate in the local pub and the food was delicious. The owner who lives infront of the property left us in peace but we called on him when ever we needed to feed the stove more wood. We couldn't have asked for anything better. I would definately go back.

December 2009
Excellent accommodation for two in a quiet and secluded village on edge of the North York Moors. Owners live next to property and are on hand if there are any problems, although we didn't have any. We planned to self-cater but village pub was so welcoming that we ate there on several nights. Very good food and they even do a fish and chip take out! It only takes 5 minutes to walk onto the moors and we managed two circular walks without needing to use the car. However, the car was needed to explore further afield. Altogether a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

December 2009
When we arrived, which was one day late due to family difficulties, the owner was on hand to show us round the property. We were left with a bottle of wine, the property was really lovely for 2 people, it was quiet, tucked away in a little Yorkshire village, yet minutes from the local pub. The accommodation layout was good as long as you could manage steps, as they led up to the property. Once up there it was superb, clean, tidy and decorated well. Lounge/kit/dining room had a comfy feel, while the bedroom and bathroom were spacious and comfortable. The location was ideal to visit Whitby, York, Thrisk and the Dales, it was a typical Yorkshire village with countryside and animals all around. This was our very first visit to Yorkshire and we would certainly visit again and stay in the same property. What we liked the best was the peace and quiet and yet not too far from many good places to visit. We really enjoyed our trip to York, really lovely old city, well worth a visit. If we had to say a like the least, this would be difficult, but maybe to make it clear to visitors that there is a washing machine/laundry facilities downstairs, which I would have used if I had known its existence, and also more leaflets on local places to visit would have been helpful. All in all though these little things certainly did nothing to spoil what was a really wonderful holiday experience.

this was a lovely holiday. The house had everything you could need. The pub nearby is quite expensive and you must book if you want a meal in there although they do have a takeaway.Take a torch as the village has no lighting after dark.Lots to see and do and never have to travel far to do it either. The owners just left us in peace to get on with our holiday and gave us a nice bottle of wine on our arrival. Perfick!!
