A secluded sanctuary in the centre of Lucca, this home is a charming spot to stay when you’re exploring one of Tuscany’s lesser-known gems. It’s right in the historic heart of this Renaissance city, yet the apartment feels perfectly peaceful – especially when you’re relaxing with a coffee or glass of wine in the lantern-lit courtyard. It might feel a tad cosy if four of you are staying and the sofa bed is set up. And the compact kitchen is best for snacks or simple meals. But with delicious local delicacies on your doorstep, you can happily take a break from cooking. Just remember to leave room for gelato.

Home truths:
*At full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living area.
*If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a cot and high chair for free. You'll need to request them in advance.
*You won't find an oven here – though there is a hob and a microwave. We think the kitchen is better suited to prepping lighter bites than large meals.
