The views from this apartment over Piazza dell'Anfiteatro are truly wonderful. No less impressive is the home itself – the open-plan living space with its double-height ceiling is fantastic. One bedroom is a Japanese-style zen retreat, while the second is located on a mezzanine with an additional lounge area (the ceilings of this bedroom are on the low side). And while there are a lot of stairs to reach this home, you don’t have to go far for an array of shops, cafes and restaurants – they are right on your doorstep. In fact, the location couldn’t be much better – most of Lucca’s main attractions are a short stroll away, including the Duomo and Guinigi Tower.

Home truths:
*There's no lift here. You'll need to be able to climb stairs to reach the fourth-floor entrance of the home. This home is also set over two floors, so it may be unsuitable for guests with limited mobility.
*One bedroom is on the mezzanine level and semi-open to the space below, so privacy is limited. This room also has low ceilings.
*If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a cot, a high chair and baby safety gates for free. You'll need to request them in advance.
