Area
On the northern banks of the River Swale, east of Richmond, is the village of Brompton-on-Swale. The settlement name, which appears in the Domesday Book, is said to have come from the old English words "broom" (the shrub) and "tun," which imply farmstead or village. A traditional bar and a village store can be found in the area today. Pleasant strolls can be taken around the hamlet and along the river. Three miles away is the historic market town of Richmond, which preserves nearly nine centuries of active history and distinctive character in its cobblestoned streets and little lanes, or "wynds." The town was founded around the castle, a 1071-year-old Norman fortress. The Castle Walk, a stunning terrace walk beneath the castle walls, and the River Swale Path, which features parks, safe paddling spots, and small waterfalls, are just two of the fantastic hikes Richmond offers today. Brompton-on-Swale is ideally situated for exploring this picturesque area because it is sandwiched between the Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors National Parks.
