We had a lovely stay at Carn Cottage. The cottage is very cosy with everything we needed. Brian is very welcoming and has lots of ideas and info about things to do. We would definitely recommend this as a place to stay.

Cottage is very well kept, clean, plenty of kitchenwear, comfortable beds, everything one could want. A lot of care's put in by the owner (Mr. Hume) to make the cottage and your stay as comfortable as possible, as well as providing a great deal of information about local walks, attractions, restaurants / eateries / sandwich houses, both from speaking to Mr Hume in person and in a compiled folder. The town is very beautiful, and the cottage itself is located around 10 minutes from the train station and quite a bit less than that to the nearest bus stop. Mr. Hume's a very helpful and welcoming host, always happy to offer pointers and suggestions for visiting the local area.

Stayed for a week here. Was very relaxing and peaceful. Kitchen is well stocked with any pans/cutlery you may need. Very good sized tv compared to other places whivh came in handy due to the very poor weather which meant we couldn't venture out very much Bedroom was a very good size and very comfy bed Bathroom was lovely with a very roomy shower. Bryan was lovely and came over to explain features of the house and provide info about the local area and also came to help when we needed a fire starting and also made sure we were ok whenever he saw us. Only slight issues we had was the road leading off the main road to the property was very tight and parking was a little tight outside the property so a larger vehicle may struggle All in all a lovely trip

We had an amazing time at Carn Cottage! Bryan was a great host and the cottage is perfectly equipped with anything a guest might need. The place was sparkling clean, the location is ideal and Bryan provided us with lots of information and advice about the area and nice places that we should visit. We strongly recommend Carn Cottage and we would like to thank Bryan for being such a lovely host. We will definitely come back!

Wonderful little hideaway for my wife and I and our 1 year old son.. Great location and Bryan is an excellent host, always on hand if you need him as he is next door but the property is still very private. I have a large car and didn’t have any trouble parking, but it is quite tight so just need to take your time. We wouldn’t hesitate to return.

Carn Cottage is a cosy home away from home, just right for two people. It has been well furnished and has everything you need for your stay. The only downside is that the parking is a little tight. Bryan, the owner, is very welcoming and full of useful local knowledge to help you make the most of your stay. Whether you are walkers or general visitors, the area has something to offer everyone. If you want a gentle walk try Kirkby Lonsdale, about a half an hours drive away, going from Ruskin's view down the Radical steps along the river to the Devil's bridge. Then you can enjoy a hearty lunch in one of the local eateries.

We loved this comfortable and cosy cottage in a great location.. Provided everything we needed for our week long break in the Yorkshire Dales. Owner Bryan who lived next door was wonderful. A helpful and friendly presence. Spent a great week exploring the Dales on foot mainly, as so many walks nearby or within a 30 minute drive. Also Long Preston station on iconic Carlisle Settle railway - great for a different car free day. Two really good evening meals at the Maypole Inn, short walk from cottage. Don’t miss a visit to the brilliant Courtyard Diary cheese shop and cafe near Settle.

If you are looking for a cozy, clean, quiet, romantic retreat away from it all, this is the place for you! The pictures do not do it justice. Carn cottage is very sweet and quaint, with ample cooking equipment to rustle up a delicious meal in the evenings. We stayed for new years and had a fantastic time. After Brian showed us how to start the traditional coal fire, he left us to it making sure that we knew where he was if we needed anything. The sitting room upstairs lends itself to a stunning view of the countryside and the bedroom downstairs is really comfortable and cozy. There is a folder in the cottage full of walks if you wish to explore and some games (including scrabble) if you want a fun night in. As for the local area, well there are two pubs in walking distance, 'The Maypole inn' and 'The Boars head' for meals and coffee if you do not fancy cooking, if you do, there is a well stocked local post office which sells fresh eggs, sausages, breakfast cereals amongst other things just along the road. For a more extensive shop, it is best to take a short drive to the co-op in Settle. We loved it here and will be returning.

The only small area of concern was the size of the designated parking area when, as I do, you drive a long estate car.. As we did not move the car for the whole week once we parked the car their was no real concern. Long Preston is a lovely village (large) with a gastro pub and a traditional pub both providing excellent food and a buzzing atmosphere.
Mr Piggott, November 2019
November 2019
The cottage was warm and comfortable.. It is ideally situated near lovely county towns and walks from the door. Bryan has provided excellent information about walks, the village and surrounding area all of which was really helpful. We will definitely use this cottage again!

July 2019
A lovely place in lovely surroundings Bryan was great on arrival, giving us advice on walks, local eateries, the area in general, he was great The cottage is just off a main road in a quiet village, the village itself is beautiful but the road is very traffic heavy The garden backs onto the road but it's bordered by a late fence/ hedge that stops a lot of the noise, it didn't spoil the " sitting in the garden relaxing " element! The village had 2 pubs, we ate in the boars head and the dessert ( chocolate fudge cake ) was unreal, the local post office has a shop in it which sold everything ( all kinds of booze! ) It also had a small alleyway beside it with charity stalls selling books and dvds and console games, we bought a DVD to watch and some books and they just ask for a donation Plenty of lovely walks that can be started from the property without driving anywhere we did drive to faizor and malham for a couple of walks, both fantastic Can't recommend the place, cottage and village, enough Cottage was extremely clean, and the bed was really soft and cosy Can't recommend it enough For anyone who enjoys walking, Bryan the owner has put together a file of nearby walks, with maps and photos, really impressed us and was really helpful 10/10

April 2019
Warm, comfortable, clean cottage with everything we required and a friendly and knowledgeable (but not intrusive) owner.. Long Preston - while not on the tourist trail itself - is a very pleasant village (two pubs serving food; one corner shop providing basic essentials such as bread and milk as well as acting as the post office) that served as an excellent base for exploring the south west side of the Yorkshire Dales. Lots to see and do (e.g. the market town of Settle, Ingleborough caves, Skipton Castle, Ingleton waterfall trail, Settle - Carlisle Railway over the Ribblehead Viaduct, etc. as well as innumerable walks) all within a 25 minute drive from the cottage and enabling the visitor to have as relaxing or strenuous a holiday as desired. Parking directly outside the cottage would be a bit tricky if you have a car any bigger than a Ford Focus-sized vehicle (we don't, so not a problem for us).

We very much enjoyed our stay in Carn Cottage, the location is ideal for exploring the many natural attractions in the area, which we did.. The train station is very handy to travel on the wonderful line from Skipton to Carlisle. Bryan the owner was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. The cottage had everything that we needed and was comfortable and clean.

August 2018
Bryan who owns the cottage is a very knowledgable man of the area, and anything you need to know he will help you with.. Would highly recommend this little gem of a cottage. The walks are beautiful and local buses are great if you don’t want to drive.

August 2018
We were met by Bryan the owner who showed us around the cottage personally.. He was very helpful in recommending places to eat and local walks to do. The property itself was ideal for 2 people who want to get away for a peaceful break. The main road (A65) is very busy and some noise can be heard but it did not bother us. There are a couple of pubs in the village which do food and I can recommend the Maypole who do a lovely Sunday lunch. The other meals on the menu are also very good and can be recommended. There are numerous walks which can be done from the doorstep or within a short drive. The Settle to Carlisle railway runs passed the cottage but journeys must be booked in advance. I can recommend the area for a peaceful and relaxing break. We will definitely return and explore the area even more.
Mrs Griggs
August 2018
Description of Carn Cottage was very accurate.. We didn't find A65 road noise an issue. Brian was a great host. We enjoyed walks from door. We used train to get to Skipton for market day. Also used train to get to Horton-in-Ribblesdale to walk up Pen-y-ghent. Lovely walk at Malham including climbing a waterfall! So much we haven't done that we would love to go back. Enjoyed meals at Boars Head pub. Local shop was very well stocked.

Cottage was in a very good location for touring the whole of the Southern region of the Yorkshire Dales.. For a 2 person cottage the cottage was spacious and very comfortable. It was also very well equipped with everything necessary for our stay. The owner was a charming and amiable person - very helpful and with a good local knowledge. I would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a break in the Yorkshire Dales. We had been warned that the cottage was close to the A65 and that there was some road noise - but after a day or two we stopped noticing it... with the doors and windows being well insulated it was barely audible. A great holiday !!!

We had a great time at Carn Cottage.. A cosy and comfortable place to stay. Bryan is a great host, very welcoming and a lovely guy. March 2018
This was our first cottage holiday and we were very pleased with the cottage.. Bryan, the owner was very helpful with all information about the cottage and the area. The cottage itself was lovely with everything you could need on holiday and in a great position with some lovely views across the countryside. The Dales are stunning and there are some great pubs all over the area. We were even lucky with the weather for the end of March, most of the days were sunny. All in all, it was a brilliant holiday in a lovely cottage and we would not hesitate to recommend this cottage to anyone.

We stayed for 3 nights and it was a very comfortable stay, the cottage had everything we needed. We was made to feel welcome and felt we could ask the owner anything if we needed. The cottage had several walks that you could use, book of attractions excellent wifi and most importantly fantastic views. The cottage was clean and the open fire was a good for a cosy night in. Just a short walk to a good pub and a village shop this the perfect place to stay.

We absolutely loved our stay at Carn Cottage. It's a lovely, cosy cottage in a beautiful village setting - what more could you want from a romantic break? The property itself was immaculate and very well equipped. The owner was lovely; a very friendly and helpful host. He went out of his way to make us feel welcome and was very informative about nice places to eat or go walking. There was lots of up to date information in the cottage about places to eat and visit, as well as lots of maps and routes that you could take to go walking with. The village was very cute and there were two fantastic pubs within walking distance, both serving good food.

We had a fab week at this lovely cottage. Just right for two people. Carn Cottage is very clean, cosy and warm. There's plenty of space, the open plan nature gives this impression. Ensuite bathroom was impressive. Bedroom was again spacious with enough wardrobe space, and a useful space in which to put suitcases. Living area was airy with a lovely warm wooden floor. Kitchen was fine, you couldn't cook a Sunday dinner there, but it was adequate for a week stay. The cottage is great as a base to see North Yorkshire. A stone's throw from the Settle to Carlisle railway's Long Preston stop. Lot's of walks around the village. Even fresh eggs from a local farm, with an honesty box! The owner, Bryan, was very welcoming and helpful, and there if needed. We would definitely return.

We stayed for 1 week at this gorgeous cozy cottage. It has everything you need for a lovely stay including really good heating, which is a plus point if you're soft southerners like us! The cottage is small but perfectly formed with a huge bedroom downstairs plus lovely ensuite with large walk in shower, then upstairs is a large open plan living room/ kitchen. The location is great for exploring the dales, with the railway station only 10 mins walk away from the cottage & malham cove only 8 miles. It's also only short drives to Skipton grassington & lots of other lovely dales villages & towns. We also drove to Harrogate, only 30 miles, which is a stunning spa town & we'll worth a visit. There are also loads of beautiful walks that you can do from the cottage. We would definitely stay here again.

We have used Sykes Cottages several times because of the quality of their accommodation and Carn Cottage was no exception. We chose the area so we could explore the Forest of Bowland and also the Dales. We found the cottage very clean, cosy and had everything we needed. We met, Bryan, the owner who gave us great advice on the local area and places of interest to visit. He couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. We had a great holiday and hope to return to Carn Cottage in the future.

Had a great holiday at Carn Cottage, the owner Bryan is a lovely man who is very helpful and friendly. The cottage was great, home from home. I would recommend this cottage to any couple who are looking for a relaxing or walking break, close to Harrogate or if you wish every Wednesday you can go on the steam train to Carlisle with lovely scenery, train leaves from Long Preston. Two restuarants within Long Preston so no need to take the car if you wish to sample the excellent Yorkshire Real Ales.

May 2014
We particularly liked the location of the cottage, we had gone with the intention of walking in the Yorkshire Dales, and this place is in a prime spot! Also, having a railway station within walking distance, made it very easy to see the surrounding area without needing to use the car. The Settle to Carlisle railway line has breathtaking views, and it was great to just get on and off the train and visit different places. The owner of the cottage is very friendly and helpful, and gave us plenty of advice about the surrounding area. We are already planning a return visit.

May 2014
Great property with excellent views of the Dales , everything you need is on hand. The holiday starts with a very informative brief from the owner Bryan who also has a very good sense of humour and really makes you feel very welcome and ensures that you have an enjoyable holiday. Two pubs within walking distance, our preference was the Boars Head with very professional and friendly staff who serve excellent food at a reasonable price. We visited Malham Cove and with the help of RSPB wardens they allowed us to view the resident Peregrine Falcons through their powerful binoculars and then pointed them out when they were in flight ..an experience not to be missed ! Other walks included Ingleborough estate and Cave again well worth a visits as is Aysgarth Falls and a pint in the pub in West Burton one of the prettiest villages in The Dales. If your eating in then try any local butcher and buy locally bred Lamb or Beef , you won't taste anything better anywhere !! A great host and cottage.

Everything we had read about Carn Cottage proved to be true. It is clean, comfortable, well-equipped (good, large shower) and the owner, Brian, who lives next door, was extremely helpful. Our only problem was linking up to Wi-Fi, but that could have been our fault! The village has a useful shop and two pubs serving reasonable food, although we preferred the Plough at Wigglesworth two miles away. Places we visited and enjoyed were: Harlow Carr and Harrogate, Malham, Bolton Abbey (lovely walks along the river), Linton (walk up to Grassington or along the river), Skipton Castle and Kirkby Lonsdale. For the more energetic there are details in the cottage of numerous walks around Long Preston. It all made for a most enjoyable week.

April 2014
We spent a week at Carn Cottage in early April. A delightful, comfortable cottage, just the right size for two. We loved the quirky upside down setting and that it had plenty of space. Great views as well. The cottage is extremely clean and well furnished, with everything you might need for the week. The owner Bryan, who lives just next door, was very welcoming and friendly, with some good suggestions for trips in the area. Parking was tight, but do-able. Just remember it's the first cottage on the left as you turn in. We found lots to do in the area - great walks and places to visit. The village itself has two good pubs and a village shop which was enough for us; plenty more shops and a good supermarket a few miles away in Settle. We would certainly be very happy to return to Carn Cottage and explore the area further.

March 2014
We had a brilliant time, with a very warm welcome by Bryan who also recommended loads of local attractions. The cottage itself is really cosy, especially with the coal fire going. The facilities were great for the few occasions we cooked in and the location is brilliant for a range of activities. We really enjoyed Skipton Castle, Bolton Abbey & White Scar caves as well as some of the local walks and lots of the local pubs. Just note that the cottage is the first on the left - heading too far down the lane might get tricky (since it narrows to about 6ft wide).

January 2014
The cottage was a comfortable hideaway for a week. It is well equipped - having the use of a gas cooker was great - and very clean, but the best thing of all was the real fire, which kept us warm and created a great atmosphere. The property is also well situated, within easy reach of the local railway station, bus stop, village shop and two pleasant pubs that serve reasonable food. Places to visit in that part of Yorkshire include Skipton Castle, the Keithley and Worth Valley steam railway and the Hellifield peel tower, which is now a fancy guest house whose restoration and converstion featured in a memorable edition of Channel 4's Grand Designs. The cottage could be a little cold at night - we were there in January - the water pressure in the the shower was a bit feeble and the wifi seemed to come and go. Those were the only weak points. On the other hand, Bryan, the owner was a very friendly and helpful host who made us feel truly welcome. He lives next door, so he is easy to reach if you need him.

May 2013
This cottage was ideal for what I required – a base to use whilst on a walking holiday. Although technically all I am looking for as a serious walker is a bed for the night I prefer to find one in a location where I can feel relaxed post walking and quickly feel at home. Carn cottage achieved this. The cottage itself is one of those quirky upside down cottages due to its location on a hillside. You therefore enter on the upper floor into a comfortable open plan area comprising kitchen, dining area and living room. Stairs take you down to the cosy bedroom with a comfortable double bed and a side room with shower and toilet facilities. The standard of cleanliness and furnishings throughout is of a very high standard and better than a lot of cottages I have stayed in previously. The owner lives in the attached cottage and is available for help or advice throughout your stay. During my stay they were issues with the central heating and the host went out of his way to keep me informed of the situation letting me know what the service personnel were doing and when the issue was resolved. He was very apologetic although I accepted this was one of these things that was outside of his control and could happen to anyone at anytime. Even so the owner presented me with a bottle of wine upon leaving as a thank you for my understanding during the week. The parking at the cottage is awkward as the property is located on a very narrow road and manoeuvring on the road can be difficult as a result. However, I drive a rather large car and was able to manage this without too many problems, so it is not impossible provided you are confident in your abilities. The other reason I have not given this the full marks is that unlike a lot of other properties that no ensure you are made welcome with some homely touches like fruit, flowers or tea/coffee/milk were not present. Obviously these are not essential but do provide that extra touch that warms the guests to the cottage from the offset.

The owner was so friendly. The cottage was great, very snug and was a great place to relax in and spend time together. We drove to Settle which was only down the road.

Wonderful and delightful cottage with exceedingly helpful and friendly owner. Moving the bathroom and toilet downstairs has made it an even more attractive holiday home. My husband I had a fantastic stay - he was celebrating his 80th birthday so it was a very special holiday and the cottage made it even more special.

We were very comfortable in a well equipped cottage. The upside-down arrangement worked well on this particular site and the conversion had been carried out very well. The owner was welcoming and friendly and anxious to make sure we were happy with the arrangements. The location of the cottage was ideal for re- visiting a part of Yorkshire we had not been for many years.

Carn Cottage was a lovely cottage, just right for two people. The owner made us feel very welcome and gave us information of the local area. This is an ideal location for walking and our car was not need once as there is a train station nearby. We will return in the future.

The friendly welcome from the owner. The home from home cleanliness and comfort of the cottage. The proximity of the village - we could walk to the local pubs, which also served excellent food, and where again, we always received a warm, friendly welcome.

We loved staying in this cottage and the owner was extremely helpful and kind. He made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much bother for him. The cottage is in a beautiful location and there are so many places to visit nearby. We even travelled to Lake Windermere which was only an hours drive away. This cottage is perfect for exploring the Dales of Yorkshire.

We loved our time at Carn Cottage. Everything was just as we expected it to be. Bryan, the owner, was a great host and really went out of his way to try and make everything perfect (which it was!). The coal fire was amazing. Perfect for when it started getting cold after we'd been out walking on the dales. (Really great footpaths nearby, Bryan showed us some others that we hadn't noticed on the map as well).

A very comfortable, new, warm cottage for two. Kitchen on small side but adequate. The large bedroom downstairs allows lovely views from up stairs sitting room. Very nice neat and tidy garden. As the cottage is set back from a busy road the traffic noise did not create a problem at all. Very friendly owner who was open to any idea that might improve the cottage. Apart from a coffee pot we couldn't fault it. Excellent for a short stay. The location of the cottage was excellent for visiting the Ribblesdale area with its fantastic scenery and the Forest of Bowlan

The cottage is situated on a busy road although you can't hear the noise from the road. The cottage is quite small in terms of space. It's good for couples but not for family. The bathroom and bedroom are nice. The kitchen doesn't have much storage place. We loved the open fire place.

We received a very warm welcome on arrival from the owner. Everything was clean and tidy and the cottage was very cosy. It was central for touring and in an ideal location within the village, quiet yet within easy walking distance of two good pubs with food.

Good location for stunning hikes, shops and pubs, (recommend Booth's in Settle for your shopping). The leaflets left in the house were useful and it was a treat to have a Scrabble set there too.

Carn Cottage is an excellent place to stay, providing comfort and convenience for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. The property is well equipped and, whilst in a small village, it is within easy reach of larger towns/shopping etc if you feel you need it. The owner was very welcoming and helpful providing us with good information on the surrounding area and seemed to take a genuine interest in us during our stay. Both myself and my partner enjoyed our stay at Carn Cottage and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.
