Mariners' Rest Whitby, North Yorkshire

Absolute perfection! 4 adults and our toddler Grandson had a very comfortable stay - everything provided, welcome pack was a nice touch and the outside space was a great spot to watch the trains go by and sit with a G&T! Another family holiday is already in the planning and we will certainly book this lovely home. Thank you!

The accommodation was perfect.. Close to Whitby and all amenities. What particularly impressed us was how the owner and Sykes went the extra mile to accommodate a very last minute booking.

Such a wonderful holiday cottage, really comfortable and stylish and practicality of off street parking.. We felt assured everything was safe and clean, the simple introduction of a box for all your used towels and linen was a great idea. We enjoyed waving to the steam train a couple of afternoons as it left Whitby station. We had a couple of walks into Whitby and visited the surrounding area beaches and woodland walks. We’d love to come back here.

Visited here last Monday for 2 nights as a Christmas treat off our mum. The location was perfect with only a 5 minute walk down the lane to the centre. The house was perfect and felt so homely. There wasnt anything that the landlords hadnt missed. The welcome pack, wine and flowers were a lovely gesture, and the Christmas tree an added bonus which we wasnt expecting!The views were lovely too with the boat yard lit up at night just stunning! Overall for our first visit to Whitby was just perfect and definitely will be back!

Superb cottage, fantastic location overlooking the harbour and views to the Abbey.. Short walk to the centre and a few trains a day were exciting for the kids. Very clean and comfortable, plenty of space for everyone. Would definitely book again to stay at Mariners Rest.

Mariners rest is a lovely house in a close quite area at the back of the harbour , it overlooks all the boats and the steam train travels right next to the house stopping for a couple of minutes, giving enough time for our grandchildren to wave to people on the train .. This is our second visit to this house and we shall return .

A lovely cottage with everything you need.. Conveniently close to Whitby town centre and the beach without having to use the car. We would definitely book Mariners Rest again for a Whitby holiday.

We have just returned from a relaxing and enjoyable week in Whitby.. Mariner's Rest is a lovely and comfortable home. Thank you very much for the welcome gifts. There's lots to do in Whitby and the surrounding areas. We're looking forward to returning another year.

A wonderful whitby home for a family , allows parking for 2 cars along with only a short walk into whitby for main shops and the beach, we had a lovely time thankyou..

Had a lovely week in Whitby staying at the Mariners Rest.. The house is ideally situated being only a good 5 minute walk away from the town centre and in a very quiet and peaceful position.We found that equipment wise we wanted for nothing.It really is a home from home and the owners have thought of everything!The welcome pack of bread,cheese,wine ,milk and flowers was extremely thoughtful and very much appreciated. My husband and I stayed in the loft bedroom which was very comfortable and afforded great views of the town and abbey from the balcony.The en-suite was nicely fitted out and looked as though it has been recently done. My mum in law stayed in one of the ample sized bedrooms on the floor below and had the good family sized bathroom to herself. We felt the house layout for us was ideal giving us all our own space! We found the property to be plenty warm enough and was pleased to find we had ample hot water at all times. The only slight downside and it is only a slight one is that I would say the kitchen is a little tired.But really this isn’t that important in the grand scale of things as there is much more to this house. Eating out in Whitby we would highly recommend humble pie and mash and fish and chips from trenchers.We visited the Bulls head in Ugthorpe for a Sunday carvery which was gorgeous and very good value at £10.80.That afternoon ended up at the Endevour pub which on a weekend has live entertainment.Would highly recommended this place. All in all had a fantastic holiday and enjoyed every aspect of Whitby.

We stayed here at the weekend on a work weekend away trip and we thoroughly enjoyed it! I loved the extra touches when we arrived of wine, bread, milk, cheese and flowers. These were just a added bonus. The cottage was so homely and had everything you could want or need. I loved the decor and little touches which added an extra homely feel to it. Location wise was perfect too, 5 minute walk to the town centre but next to the harbour. The view was amazing from the balcony and in the far view of the abbey. Just lovely! My favourite part was opening the blinds in the morning and the sun shinning though to a beautiful view! Just stunning!

Fantastic house in a good location 6 adults,1 eight year old , one 3 month old baby and a small dog all with plenty of space to spend a comfortable long weekend away.. within easy walking distance of Whitby and excellent facilities for self catering.

Great holiday had everything we needed for our stay.. Excellent facilities and the off street parking was perfect as previous stays in Whitby parking is difficult. very quiet area not far from the shops.

Had a problem with heating but quickly addressed by owner.. Could have done with a sharp knife for chopping but managed. A very lovely cottage and really close to everything bonus lovely old steam trains passing.

We love coming to Whitby, but it makes our holiday when we have such excellent accommodation,Mariners Rest is lovely,just on the outskirts of Whitby,but near enough to walk into the town and we just love watching and waving as the Steam Trains go by! most enjoyable,we even had a Welcome Pack left for us,most grateful.Thank you

Close to town but far enough away for peace and quiet.. Everything you could possibly need in this lovely and immaculate cottage. Would recommend mariners rest for an extended family holiday as there is plenty of room. The welcome pack came in very handy.

We had a wonderful week at mariners rest.. The house was beautiful and so well looked after. The location is brilliant, only a short stroll into Whitby town. We would definitely visit again.

Mariners Rest cottage was absolutely stunning.. From arriving to complimentary wine and essentials, the whole property was beautiful, spotlessly clean and fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. Would highly recommend this property and will definitely be returning in the future. And the staff at Sykes are helpful, friendly and make the holiday booking experience so much nicer.

Having visited Whitby as a family holiday destination many times previously, we decided to visit again as six of us (three couples) for a winter holiday. When we arrived at the cottage it was absolutely beautifully decorated throughout, and there was more than enough space for us all. A very good sized kitchen with everything we needed, as well as a little welcome pack which was lovely - wine, cheese, milk - everything we needed to make us feel welcome at Mariner's Rest. The master bedroom is gorgeous, with an amazing balcony overlooking the harbour and with gorgeous views over the town. The other bedrooms are great sizes - one double, one with two singles and another single bedroom. The living room is also a great size, enough seating for six people around the electric fire for cosy nights in front of the television. There's a good sized dining table - so good we managed to eat a whole Christmas dinner with all the trimmings around it as we won't all be spending Christmas together this year. Outside is a great area too, again overlooking the boats in the harbour. Admittedly we didn't spend too much time there as it was very cold - but in the summer it would be a perfect area for alfresco dining. To the front of the house there is two car parking spaces - something we have struggled with in the majority of other holiday cottages we have stayed in. Most of Whitby is on road parking and it can be hit and miss if you don't get there at the right time - so having these two spaces at the front of the house was very convenient for us. The house itself provided everything, possibly more than we could have asked for in a holiday home. It is a shame that the experience was somewhat scuppered on the last night of our holiday. Obviously the last night of anyones holiday is a busy one - especially when the check out time is quite early in comparison to other cottages we have stayed in (10am). With six adults packing a weeks worth of things, as well as trying to cook dinner for six - there was a knock at the door and it was the owner of the property. She turned up at about 7pm to ask if she could come in to the house with the cleaner at 9.30 instead of 10am, which is something a phone call would have been sufficient for, but actually it almost felt like she was looking to see if we had done anything wrong. I can totally understand that an owner of a property might want to meet the people staying in their house, but I would probably recommend doing that at the start of someones holiday rather than the night before they leave at tea time. It made us all feel quite awkward and it definitely put a negative spin on the holiday at the last minute. There was a comment made about my dog too, who was sat on a blanket that we had bought to put on one area of the sofa. In the holiday listing the property was listed as dog friendly, but when you arrive at the cottage there are 'rules' about where your dog can and can't go. I respect that people may not allow their dogs on the furniture, but as a dog who is used to being allowed everywhere in a house we bought a blanket so there was no contact with the furniture. I didn't appreciate the owner telling my dog off, especially when the rules aren't mentioned in the advertisement for the house. There were a few negative comments made about other guests who had stayed previously, which almost made us feel like she would be saying negative things about us to the next guests. Overall, it's a shame but we wouldn't stay in the house again as we were made to feel so uncomfortable on the last night of our holiday.

This is our 2nd time staying at Mariner's Rest & definitely won't be the last.The house is a home from home,so clean & cosy.The welcome pack was much appreciated after a long journey.The house is ideally situated in Whitby,it's in a quieter part but only 10 minute walk to the centre of Whitby.Has parking for 2 cars which is a big bonus as parking is at a premium in Whitby-the on road parking spaces soon fill up & other areas operate a disc parking system. The steam trains going past the house is a real bonus-the month we stayed the 1st one went past about 9.45am & last was about 5.30pm.The time table changes though. Visited Falling Foss waterfall,amazing little tearoom in middle of woods,dogs welcome-steep path & definitely sensible shoes should be worn. Sandsend beach & beach café is well worth a visit,dogs welcome in outside area. Whitby is full of lovely places to eat-especially fish & chips. Will definitely be back very soon.

House as described, very smart and cosy.. Loved the steam trains going past and it was a short walk to the mariner. The flowers and food and wine was a lovely surprise. Lots of thought put into how the house looked. Would have liked a couple of tea towels and as extra sack for the rubbish.

The house is situated close to all Whitby amenities, ideal for relaxing and local walks. The locals were friendly and the steam railway passes at the bottom of the garden several times a day.

An amazing place to stay, it was easy to find and it had everything you could need. It was a 5 minute walk to the supermarket and not much longer into town. The house was beautiful, the bedrooms were all good sizes and we never had any issues with space in the living area as they have two large sofas and 2 large comfy chairs. Would recommend to anyone.

This is a well appointed cottage, we have never had the amount of kitchen equipment at other properties. The standards overall are excellent, we particularly liked the location.

An amazing place to stay, it was easy to find and it had everything you could need.. It was a 5 minute walk to the supermarket and not much longer into town. The boys loved dashing out to wave at each one and the lovely people who waved back. I'd recommend this to everyone and would happy to come back. An added bonus in Whitby was parking for up to three cars!

We went as an extended family group six adults one child one baby and of course Douglas the dog. This house is amazing very well equipped Large lounge big kitchen & the loft bedroom with on suite and balcony over looking the river Esk, boat yard and steam trains heaven, we wanted for nothing and so clean and modern ~ as anyone who has read my other reviews from last years disaster will know how much this matters! Plenty of parking a bonus in Whitby and for one small boy steam trains right out side the door, he waved to everyone and the lovely people waved back! I'd recommend this house to everyone

We love Whitby, we go there every year but it was the first time that we had stayed in this property. We loved the house and the location, the trains that go past did not bother us at all, in fact they sort of added to the enjoyment, we will be back next year hopefully.

Lovely light, airy, well decorated cottage with everything needed for our family group. Had excellent walking access to Whitby but away from the busy centre. Parking outside the cottage was a bonus too. We have had a great week and hope to return.

In a great location, only a short walk to town, and in easy reach of all facilities and access to walks etc. There was a really good selection of pubs/restaurants - we were spoilt for choice! The cottage owner was available if we needed anything (which we didn't). It was an ideal cottage for families, it was very warm cosy and comfortable.

The location is great for access to and from Whitby. The town centre was a 10 min walk and all amenities are near by. Says parking for 2 but we easily got 3 cars on the front....a massive plus for Whitby. If you have kids or you're an enthusiast of trains and boats, all you need to do is look out of the window and enjoy steam trains passing / stopping a few feet from the house during the day. Also a boat yard at the other side of the tracks, so my 3 year old was in his element!

It was all extremely enjoyable - the owner was very welcoming, I would rate overall as VERY good. It was a cottage of character and we enjoyed the steam train going by. It was in nice walking distance to the town of Whitby and parking at the cottage was good.
