This quaint, chocolate box thatched cottage, a Grade II-listed building built in 1590, is found in Beaulieu in the southeast of the New Forest. A period home with great modern touches, it smoothly combines comfort, style and warmth. The kitchen is well suited to larger groups with two fridges and two dishwashers, and we loved the wood burning stoves and luxurious roll top baths. The garden is charming – a veritable fairy-tale setting that will delight guests of all ages – and backs onto meadows that are perfect for stomping through come rain or shine. It couldn't be better located, as on the other side of the house lies Beaulieu High St, with shops, pubs and restaurants just a short walk away.
Home truths: *This home doesn't have a television but has excellent wi-fi and plenty of board games to entertain
*Bedroom 5 has a double bed but it would be snug for two
*Two of the bedrooms have zip-and-link beds, so these can both be converted from kings to two singles
*We think this home is a bit of a squeeze for ten guests, as the only place for everyone to sit together is the dining table. We'd recommend a maximum guest count of seven
*Your host provides a starter pack of logs for one fire – you can pick up some more wood at a nearby garden shop
*This is an old house, and as such, it can feel a little damp and chilly at times – nothing turning the heating on or lighting a fire won't fix
