Area
The ruins of King Arthur's Castle stand high on the cliffs just outside the historic Cornish town of Tintagel. Tintagel is a welcoming place for all visitors, with several attractive pubs, restaurants and specialist shops. The South West Coast Path is at its most impressive here, and can be walked in either direction. The pretty village of Boscastle can be found a couple of miles northwards along the path. The sea in these parts is a surfer's delight, and several beaches are in easy reach of Tintagel. Just 15 miles away is the popular resort of Bude, and other places which are well worth a visit are Bodmin Moor (with its spooky Jamaica Inn) and the world-famous Eden Project.

We came here for 10 nights and had a lovely welcome from Robin. Everything you need is in this cottage, hairdryer in bedroom and everything you would need in a kitchen. The cupboard at the end of the kitchen is used as a wardrobe also and has iron/ironing board and airer. Though the two seater sofa is old, it was very comfortable though the arm covers spoil it, there’s no point as they don’t even fit. There was also plenty of really hot water! The smell in the cottage is of ‘woodland’ that’s the only way to describe it. It’s surrounded by greenery even at the back of the cottage and also a stream. We hung clothes out on the rotary washing line in the garden on Thursday morning it was a scorching hot day but when we got back at teatime everything was as wet as on the morning. My partner put the airer with our clothes up in the bedroom area the next morning behind the headboard as it was really warm up there, and the clothes were dry when we got back. The laundry facilities were great though and it was only £1 to use the washer. Take plenty of 20p pieces if you want to use the drier. The grass never seemed to dry out and that’s what I think the smell is…..damp woodland and not forgetting that this is a very old cottage. I did purchase a couple of air fresheners during our stay which really helped. The gardens are stunning and the cottage was in the middle of Tintagel and Boscastle which was handy as we were able to walk into Tintagel. Overall the cottage was cosy and there were no issues with the wifi and we had a nice stay.

We visited the coachmans cottage recently and although things were broken like the heated towel rail and the shower screen we were happy with our stay although I will agree with other reviews that it smelt and felt damp but think that is down to the age of the property

Stayed for a week for a quiet getaway on my own.. It was very peaceful and thoroughly enjoyed the location, plenty of walking, and coastal path nearby offering spectacular views.Owners were on hand if I needed anything although the occasion didn't arise. As other reviewers not a lot of headspace in the bedroom so not ideal for tall people.

We enjoyed the peace and quiet and darkness which enabled us to see many more stars than we would have normally.. Was a very relaxing stay. Will hopefully go back again.

Amazing location and nice host .. The cottage was brilliant , and made us feel like home . The little stream by the cottages was beautiful and felt so peaceful when sitting outside in the evenings. We lived the fact that there was a path from the cottage garden that lead to the forest and to Nectan's Glen . The little bench outside the cottage was great as we sat there star gazing in the evenings . The cottage came well equiped with cleanibg supplies , iron , ironing board and hoover . We would definitely love to come back .

Good location for the places we wanted to visit and quiet.. On arrived, the Coach House appeared satisfactory and the owner was very welcoming and friendly. The bathroom was clean and acceptable. The kitchen looked clean and was usable but it was equipped an array of old, mis-matching of trays, cutlery and utensils. Although the walls in the lounge area were clean and bright, the furniture needs updating. The whole ambience of the room was spoiled by a rather old, grubby rug/runner? in front of the fireplace. The mezzanine had an assortment of “furniture”. The mattress was comfortable but the duvet/bedding needs replacing. There was an overall smell of damp in the cottage.

The cottage is in a beautiful location , just a short walk up to St Nectans Glen waterfall .. Also many stunning coastal walks easily accessible from the Coachmans. We enjoyed our stay there , the kitchen and bathroom are in good order , the living area could do with an update to make it more comfortable , its just an assortment of old furniture both in the living room and bedroom . Okay for a quiet base for touring the area.

Pretty little stable conversion, cozy warm and well equipped.. Loved staying here, the weather wasn't great during the week so missed the walks in the 20 acres. Very wet underfoot. The only downside to the cottage was the bedroom, the stairs were not for those with mobility problems and once up them the headroom wasn't great, we got dressed downstairs. The bed very warm and comfortable. Full size bathroom with an over the bath shower. Loads of very hot water. We met the owner on the first and last day but he was on hand next door if needed. Gated entrance to the drive so no passing traffic. Would really recommend this cottage.

My husband and I stayted in the coachmans back in 1975 when I was about 18 we had a lovely holiday there. So this year for our 30th anniversary we decided to go back, the place hadn't changed much but had changed, we found it comfortable and warm in the evenings and there was a log burner if we got cold, the good change was there were stairs up to the hay loft where the bed is not a ladder which was there last time in the 70s, not sure we could of done the ladder now as my husbands 72.and when he went up there I would shout mind your head, the kitchen was nice and great bathroom and shower, there was a bit of a musky smell but the cottage is built up against the cliff. And it's old there was no sign of mould it was very clean. We had a lovely holiday there reliving the memories of all those years ago, Robin the owner was very friendly and helpful the only negative is maybe get the new mattress for us old ones. Thank you Robin for letting us relieve our youth.

Although it is set in lovely grounds with pretty walks.. The big let down is the bedroom it was not really as described. It does say it has a low roof, but even I had problems and I'm only 5'4" My husband who is 5'10" really struggled. The bedroom itself had no room to get round the bed and you were bent double trying. We had to get dressed downstairs. The bathroom is nice but in the photos you cannot see how close it is to the living room. It leaves nothing to the imagination for anyone sat in the there. We did enjoy our holiday but would book either Mill Cottage or Miller's House next time.

Where the cottage is situated was quiet and incredibly beautiful.. The cottage is picturesque. Internally it was comfortable and well equipped. The bedroom ceiling is low so if your tall it’s going to be difficult. The WiFi didn’t work for 4 days and the owner was away. But it was sorted quickly on return. The owner was very helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend this cottage. Overall we had a great holiday

A beautifully kept and peaceful romantic retreat.. Our second visit in five years and we were not disappointed. We spent our first Christmas together here and this year I proposed to my wife to be! Wonderful.

My partner and I have stayed in coachman's for the last three years. The cottage is perfect - it is immaculate in terms of cleanliness, warm, dry and comfortable. Although some reviews mention damp we have never experienced this in the slightest. The cottages are vintage but this adds to their charm! The cottage is incredibly romantic and quaint. We wouldnt have chosen to have our honeymoon here if not! Although it is situated near a road we have never been disturbed or heard any traffic. It is in walking distance of Tintagel - only 20 mins to half an hour which is perfect as the walk is stunning. The views from the cottage are also incredible. There is a bench directly outside which allows you to sit and observe the amazing gardens and listen to the relaxing stream. The owner could not be more helpful. Each time he has offered us a lift to the station as we do not drive. We booked out the cottage during our wedding and he moved heaven and earth to make sure any re-paving was completed in time as to not disturb any of our plans. We highly recommend staying in this gorgeous property and we will definitely be returning for a fourth year in a row!

My partner booked this so called "romantic" cottage for a week as a surprise holiday. The place looked charming and decently appointed, but what a disaster. The place stank so much of damp and rot that we that we checked out after the first night and moved to a bed and breakfast for the rest of the week. The owner was was totally disinterested and told my partner "If you have a problem with the cottage, move out". Sykes cottages denied any responsibility and have been most unhelpful. Our only recourse is now to take legal action.

At the time of writing this England has been in the grip of a phenomenal heatwave that has lasted more than two weeks. Despite this, upon our arrival the cottage absolutely reeked of damp and mould. It is deeply unpleasant to spend any amount of time in the sitting area. What is also not disclosed is that the cottage is situated right at the entrance to the property, and because of the folks occupying the other cottages there is constant stream of traffic along a noisy gravel road, which passes only inches from the front door. The cottage is also not romantic in the least. It is dull, dark, depressing and mouldy. Really not conducive to romance! It was so bad that we left after only one night, which meant kissing goodbye to more than £600. The owner really couldn’t care less. Avoid at all costs! Other reviews on Google and Tripadvisor also mention the mouldy smell, so please don’t think I have an axe to grind. Well, actually I do. I will most definitely be taking this up with English Tourism.

The holiday was great! We booked with a minimum deposit and were given time to pay the balance. We then sat back and waited for the big day. Sykes sent us regular emails to update and remind us leading up to the holiday. It was a totally hassle free experience!

My partner and I have recently been having short breaks away and have stayed in many lovely places but had to move out of Coachmans after one very uncomfortable night. The 'mezzanine ' floor is more of a shelf , is extremely uncomfortable and reached by a ladder which I, as a fit and able person felt was unsafe as it's treads have been so polished with years of use. The so called 'mezzanine' floor was so cramped my partner , who's 5' 3" had to continually stoop to avoid banging her head. Note that a review in 2012 said the place was 'dated' and personally I would describe it as merely VERY basic 'bunkhouse' type accommodation DEFINITELY NOT a ' romantic , character cottage'. The only clothes storage is a hanging space by the front door ,which is very inconvenient. We were kept awake through the night by the bathroom fan which kept switching itself off and then on again. The only way of keeping it quiet was to clamber down the ladder to remove the fuse from the fuseboard meaning there were then no lights! The place is built hard up against the side of the valley, which when we were there was running with water which explains the damp and musty smell as having windows on just one side of the property means it is not possible to properly 'air' the place. Consequently , to clear the musty smell we had to open the front door in the morning to get some amount of fresh air into the place . Not ideal in October !! We moved out having found a beautiful place with Classic Cottages who we would heartily recommend ..... Unlike Sykes Cottages, and the owner of this very poor accommodation , who are currently both refusing us any refund for the money we have wasted on our ruined holiday in Coachmans . Shameful !! I have never taken the trouble to write a review before , but I really felt it was necessary to set the record straight about this place, and the poor service I feel we have received from the owner and Sykes Cottages , who it turns out do not inspect their properties ,which I would suggest can then lead to misleading descriptions such as 'Romantic ,Character Cottage' .... ' Coachmans ' is certainly NOT that in my view!! Buyer Beware , of 'Coachmans' and Sykes Cottages!!

We really enjoyed this cottage and its ambiance.. But especially the setting - more could be made of this, and the walk up the valley to St Nectan's shrine now being developed, plus the short and delightful walk to the sea in the other direction. The position generally couldn't be better. One thought, the ivy is best removed at some stage from all the tall trees on the slopes, for eventually it kills them.

Had an absolutely wonderful time at the cottage. The grounds and the cottage exceeded our expectations, we are hoping to come back to the same place very soon. Found the owner extremely welcoming and helpful.

Stayed in the cottage for 2 weeks. The location is beautiful, however, the interior is dated and could do with an update, that said, it is quite adequate as a base for a stay in the area. There is a ladder to the mezzanine bedroom which has limited headroom. If you are slightly infirm of don't like heights, this is not for you!! It is walkable to Tintagel but only if you are able to walk distances as it is quite a hike. We had glorious weather so got out every day. I would not have enjoyed it so much if we had been stuck in this cottage!

This is a great spot for walking the coast path and for surfing. We used the bus service a lot and the drivers always dropped us at our doorstep! The lack of light pollution made the nights very dark and great for star gazing.

July 2012
On arrival the interior of the cottage was very dated however we soon forgot about this once we had settled in. It was clean and the bed was very comfy. PLEASE BE AWARE that the stairs to the Mezzine bedroom is actually a steep wooden ladder and the ceiling in the bedroom is low although my 6ft 3 husband managed for the week ! The owner (although not very talkative !) was very polite and didn't bother us all week but is on hand in the cottage next door if you need anything. The cottage itself is not within walking distance of Tintagel town but is only a min in the car down the road. The kitchen had everything you could ask for in it for self catering right down to the utensils. The grounds are lovely with the river running through the garden and if you follow the path through the back of the garden you can then walk right up to a cafe and a waterfall (although you cannot see the waterfall unless you pay !) All in all we were glad we stayed in Tintagel and would say the garden/stream made up for the dated decor inside the cottage. If you are using it only as a base then this would suit your needs,

It was very peaceful and perfect for a get away from it all holiday. The log fire was good because although it wasn't particularly cold ,it was cloudy and grey in the evenings and this was a cheery feature.
