Area
The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two national parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct.

Region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

Photos did not do this place justice.. It was extremely well kitted out. The home is beautiful and the hosts attentive and helpful but not overbearing. Really beautiful place to stay and relax. We really loved it. The disabled facilities were super - thank you.

We chose this accommodation due to the wheelchair access.. It was excellent. It had everything we could have needed and more. Owners were very helpful.

We really enjoyed our stay at Holly Lodge which was extremely well equipped for the disabled holiday maker.. The pleasant owners who were unobtrusive, but readily available should the need arise, have put considerable time and effort into providing a spacious but cosy holiday cottage that has everything you could possibly need and more! Our only concern was the delightful, but expensive, Portmerion crockery. We would have liked the option of an everyday set to use for the less dexterous guest.

Had a great weekend with family.. Cottage was well equipped to a high standard and lovely and warm and cosy on very cold days. Our dog really enjoyed the underfloor heating! Great location. Walk into village was fine during the day but we would not do it in the dark due to having to cross a very busy, fast road. Shops/pubs there and we did get a really great takeaway from Ashiana restaurant, where they were happy to provide us with a guaranteed milk free curry for a dairy allergy sufferer. There were a couple of things that could have been improved, for us: We thought some of the many laminated label/notices were not needed, such as the lengthy one on the bathroom bins which went into a bit too much detail (really not necessary). Although it was a nice touch having the lovely Portmeirion crockery to use we were worrying the whole time about breakages, due to another laminated notice stating the very high prices to replace any broken items; surely this should be up the owners to foot the bill for any breakages - never come across this before. We would have been happy with cheaper plates/cups etc and not be so worried. Despite the above suggestions we did have a great weekend; my husband really enjoyed his retirement break.

Excellent accommodation that was ideal for our group including my elderly mother who has limited mobility.. The downstairs bedroom and wetroom, wide corridor, spacious living room and step free access along with every facility that we could need had all been well thought out and was of a very high quality. We really enjoyed our time at Holly Lodge and would recommend it to anyone in a similar situation.

We had a great time at Holly Lodge.. It’s ideally located to explore the Lake District and the accomodation was to a very high standard with everything we needed. The garden was beautiful and the owners kind and helpful. Appleby is a lovely place and it was great to take our dog on holiday with us. The only thing that caught us a bit unaware was the slight overnight noise from the A66 which runs parallel to Holly Lodge but after the first night I hardly noticed it. This could only be heard in the front bedrooms. I’d definitely recommend Holly Lodge especially to wheelchair users as designed to cater for all.

This was the best holiday cottage we have stayed at.. It was in a lovely location with plenty of places to visit close by. The cottage itself was very wheelchair accessible which meant my mum's holiday was enjoyable. It was very clean with all amenities and Jan and a John were very friendly hosts! Loved it!!

We really enjoyed our week's stay at Holly Lodge.. Very comfortable cottage with excellent views of the Pennines but only a relatively short walk to the town & river. Hope to return in the future.

Lovely cottage and Jan and John are really nice hosts.. Very clean and lots of thoughtful touches. Amazing views at the back of the property, The main road nearby can be quite noisy so earplugs are a good idea if you are a light sleeper. The garden is lovely and leads to some beautiful woods, however it is shared with the b&b next door so isn’t private. My parents had breakfast at the b&b one morning and really enjoyed it. Their dog Oliver is very friendly. Overall would recommend.

Beautiful cottage.. Very high specs. Beautiful area. Medium walk into Appleby-in-Westmorland though along dark lanes with sometimes fast moving vehicles so a little scary in the dark of winter. Cottage provides good torches. Nice garden with wonderful views. Plenty of parking. Would worry if booking with very young children as cottage full of quite expensive items and there is a list of the cost of replacing which is quite scary. Overall great weekend

We stayed at Holly Lodge. It is excellent there is everything you need at the lodge. It tastefully furnished. John and Jan the owners cannot do enough for you and they are very helpful. My sister is in a wheelchair and it was perfect for her. There are so many places to visit Appleby its self is a lovely place. There are so many places to visit, the lakes, Yorkshire and Hadrians Wall. We visited a wildlife park while we were there it was lovely. Grasmere is also a lovely place to visit.I would have no hesitation of recommending both Holly Lodge and Appleby in Westmorland you can also take your pets. Look for the rabbits running round the garden, also an abundance of lovely birds and not to forget the red squirrel,

Holly Lodge is a really homely and extremely well finished cottage with all a family would want and then some. Even though it rained pretty much constantly (it is in the Pennines after all!) we were warm, dry, comfortable and content.
