The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two national parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. Visit Appleby in June and experience the atmosphere of the three hundred-year old Horse Fair. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.

Glenridding Cottage is decorated, furnished and equipped to a very high standard. Chocolate cake, wine, eggs, milk and dog treats welcomed us. Allyson is a fantastic host and nothing is too much trouble. The gardens are beautiful, very safe for dogs, we enjoyed a bbq. The cottage is ideally situated to explore Yorkshire and The Lakes. Kirby Stephen is a short drive away and would recommend The Black Bull, very dog and people friendly, The Mango Tree serves great Indian food and a fab bakery on the high street. We enjoyed a fantastic meal at The Bay Horse, Winton, again, a short drive away. We had such a relaxing holiday, would highly recommend.

We’ve just returned home from a wonderful break away at Glenriddings cottage. The surrounding countryside and setting was so beautiful and relaxing and the cottage was immaculate and felt so homely. We particularly loved the reading snug, it was perfect and just what we all needed. Our little boy (2yr old) absolutely loved running around the gardens and every morning he’d wake up so excited, running up to the window to see the horse in the front field. Thank you so much to Allyson and Mark for your hospitality and the little details (fresh flowers, cakes and everything we needed was appreciated. We all felt so welcome and can’t wait to return. This is the forth time we have visited this lovely gem of a cottage tucked away in the beautiful Eden Valley, close to both the Lake District and North Yorkshire attractions. From the moment we arrived we were greeted as always by the owners Allyson and Mark who are always so welcoming and super hosts. The cottage is large, spotlessly clean and very well equipped with everything you could possibly need for a wonderful stay. The pretty dog secure garden is perfect for sitting and enjoying the sun while taking in the stunning countryside views. Cannot wait until we can visit again!

This rural cottage was one of the best equipped places I've stayed in a long time. Cleanliness was 5* . You would never know a dog had stayed here. Gardens are beautiful, All rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished. The little snug behind the kitchen was lovely to sit there and watch the animals in the fields.or chill with a good book and glass of wine. the log fire made it so cosy in an evening. It was a good base for walks and easy access to lakes and local villages. We will definately be staying here again, Alison and Mark couldn't have been nicer. Read an unfavorable review before going, so glad we ignored it. some people will complain about anything.

We were looking for a remote dog friendly cottage and we found possibly the best cottage we have ever stayed in. Allyson met us on arrival and armed with 20 questions for her, we found the best places to eat, shop, local walk for the boys (2 x Westies) She is a mind of info and well worth spending half an hour in her company. The Cottage is so beautifully decorated and equipped. Though there was only the 2 of us and we used very little in the way of kitchen equipment and rooms, there is so much the property has to offer. Great doggie wet room.....for rubbing down wet paws after a days walk in The Pennines or The Lakes. Washing machine. Spare towels. Cupboard fully stocked with every game you can think of to while away a wet dull afternoon. Welcome gifts for two and four legged guests....amazing cake and bottle of shiraz and tin of doggie treats, Allyson thinks of everything to welcome you to their cottage. The Snug...a small 1 seated room to sit and look out at the view is a must. My treat every morning with a coffee. Archie our puppy loved the view also albeit the local sheep was his interest! The garden has 2 areas with the bottom being fully enclosed even for the most inquisitive Westie! It would of been lovely to seen the garden at it's best mid summer with all of the plants, shrubs and containers in full bloom. But unfortunately October weather took the best out of the blooms. Fully equipped kitchen, Allyson has thought of everything. 6 seater dining table. Dishwasher. Fridge freezer. Microwave. Guest Information book and pamphlets on local visitor sites. Take time to read Guest Information book. It gives you everything you need to know on the property and the local area. A stair gate at the bottom of the stairs kept the boys downstairs at night, usually they sleep in our room and it's in the House Rules no dogs on beds. We are in someone else's home and respect their wishes. Excellent addition. Other dog friendly properties need to adopt. 3 x bedrooms and as I mentioned only the 2 of us so we only used the king size room. Very comfortable and tastefully decorated as were the other 2. Bathroom also well decorated with over bath shower, ample hot water. Living room saw a woodburner fully stocked ready to fire up and plenty of coal sticks and wood if needed. The Cottage is located in a no through road hamlet containing about a dozen other homes. Horses and sheep are your neighbours with plenty of rabbits on their walk to send the boys into a frenzy! Parking for 1 and advise to park tight to the wall. All in all, this is by far the best cottage we have stayed in with Allyson and Mark always ready for a chat over the fence. Would we recommend? I think my review says it all.

Had a wonderful week at Glenridding Cottage with our family and two dogs. The cottage is decorated to a high standard and is a home from home. The garden is beautiful and fully enclosed, so safe for our dogs. The snug was a favourite to sit in with a coffee looking out at the garden and the Pennines in the distance. The location was excellent, with a main road nearby and easy access to the Lake District, Pennines or Yorkshire Dales, you really are spoilt for choice. Even when the weather was bad, it was nice to spend the day in front of the log burner watching dvds and playing games. The kitchen was well equipped and all rooms were and excellent size and very clean; it is clear that the owners put a lot of effort and care into the property. The owners were very friendly and always on hand to help, weather it be directions to local shops or advise on parking at nearby villages. Their dogs were lovely, and our children loved meeting them over the gate. An excellent cottage, welcoming owners and perfect location which we will definitely be revisiting very soon.

I feel slightly guilty writing this as I can see that Alision pours her heart into this place but hear me out. The Cottage itself is stunning probably one of the nicest ones I've ever stayed in, it was well equipped and had everything you could possibly need, it's clear it's very dog friendly. It's a short distance from so many things so coming as a family is highly recommended. So why the negative review? Well as soon as we arrived we were warmly welcomed by Alision which was great. Her Husbands first words to me were are you going to look after it? Id taken this as a poor attempt at humour. Once we settled in to the cottage which was spotless we read through the rules which stipulated that pets were not to be left in the property regardless of how well behaved. So I decided to check if there was any flex in this by just inquiring with the owners. Mark was very rude out of order the way he spoke to me. I mearly explained the pets were very well behaved and would just sleep and one suffered heavily with Arthritis his words and I quote "Not My Problem Mate" "It's Not A Kennel" and finally "They are our rules and we're sticking to them" again be mindful I was only asking if it was possible as it wasn't stipulated on the website on the booking page (I later read that its part of the T&C with Sykes.) Alison later came across and explained why we couldn't leave the pets as it had been previously been damaged by previous guests pets. Again this would of been fine if said in the first place without the attitude and rudeness from Mark. Unfortunately the week then gained a very nasty atmosphere from Mark who would stand at his back door smoking and glaring across at us. This led to us not wanting to make any contact with the owners to request anything like the BBQ. Again I must relay, Alison was very polite and helpful. All of the above could of been avoided with just a little bit more appreciation for the guest, the whole experience has left me disappointed and underwhelmed. For future guests please be aware the cottages requires a really heavy deep clean before you leave, the on site guest guide stipulates all floors are to be hoovered/mopped and pet hair found in the property must be removed and if the condition of the cottage isn't satisfactory from the owner they will raise a £50 charge through Sykes against the guests. Feedback for the owners would be. Consider raising the fence between the properties to give people a degree of privacy. Consider reducing the amount of rules within the book. Never leave a fine threat in the welcome book. BBQ should always be in the garden with a cover over it so people can use it without having to approach the owners. Again I feel guilty for this type of review because it isn't nice to write especially when I can see the effort Alison goes to. See my words as feedback to make your guests experience as amazing as it should be.

Immaculate, well presented dog (and human) friendly cottage.. The owners are very welcoming and have thought of absolutely everything! Lovely finishing touches, perfect location for exploring Lake and Pennines. Plenty hot water, roaring log burner, warm & cosy, excellent facilities, spacious utility room for dogs & well maintained, secure gardens. Trips to Keswick, Ullswater & Penrith and go in the other direction for Hawes, Buttermere and a beer a Tan Hill Inn (England's highest pub). Spectacular walks to waterfalls at Aygsurth, High Force & Aria. We literally ran out of time and will definitely be back. This cottage ticks all the right boxes, and more!!!

We stopped in Glenridding Cottage for a long weekend as two couples, with one small toddler as we were attending a wedding in the local area.. The cottage is very spacious with a great homely feel. It has all the facilities you could require for both short and longer stays, including a well stocked board game cupboard which we took advantage of. Thanks to some nice weather we enjoyed evenings out in the lovely, well maintained garden which is enclosed (ideal for us with a toddler exploring!). Allyson and Mark were superb hosts and greeted us all with a warm welcome and shared great knowledge of the local area. I would highly recommend the cottage.

The cottage was so quiet and peaceful, a real home from home with lovely touches and the owners thinking of everything for a comfortable and relaxing stay.. It was spotlessly clean, had everything we needed and was very dog friendly. We enjoyed the card, bottle of wine and cake that welcomed us when we arrived and our two flat coated retrievers loved the dog treats! There were plenty of dog bowls and blankets for the dogs if we needed them and the enclosed garden was lovely and safe with plenty of areas for you to sit and take in the scenery. All in all a lovely cottage in a lovely area. Would definitely like to make a return visit.

We loved relaxing in the lounge with the log fire after a days walking! The dogs loved the garden and its great that it is enclosed. Everything you could need to be able to cook meals is provided and all the crockery is lovely and new. We had the best start to new year at this cottage and we love to return!

It has a wonderful rear garden with beautiful views, fully enclosed and perfect for our two dogs to play in. Owners live next door and told us the best walks for the dogs to go. March 2018
Cottage location was lovely, right in the Eden Valley and with lots of footpaths right from your doorstep.. The cottage is remote which we liked but its like home from home, clean, well equipped and very comfortable. The owners are right next door and so any problems could be easily sorted, not that we had any at all. Dogs are more than welcome here, Alyson and Mark even left them treats and a welcome card. We felt at home and very welcome. We would visit again without hesitation.

March 2017
Lovely cottage which we will certainly be staying in again. Right near the main road but far enough away, with hills inbetween, to not even know the road was there. The front of the cottage also faces a paddock where you can sit in the lovely front garden and watch the horses graze. The house is really nicely set out. Holidaying with dogs can be problematic but this place is made for it. The owners are dog friendly and have their own dogs next door. The house has a boot room for throwing muddy dogs and can be accessed via the kitchen so you dont have to worry about messing the living room up. The kitchen is very spacious and even has a 'reading' room off it with a picture window overlooking the lovely rear garden and the fields behind it. Due to having two big dogs I have to worry about the security of the gardens when visiting rentals but this place is made for dogs. There is a large, high fenced section for the dogs to roam or sunbathe and then a separate further garden for people only. Absolutely ideal to let the dogs out in a secure area in the morning to do their ablutions. The living room is really cosy but big enough for 6 and with a lovely iron stove which the owners top up with fuels for a small fee. All the bedrooms are very spacious and light and the decor of the whole cottage is modern but with cottage character.
Mr Fairley
July 2016

April 2016
We recently spent a week at the Glenridding cottage for a family vacation along with our two dogs. Finding a cottage that allows a couple of dogs can be diffcult but Glenridding welcomes them with open arms and the dogs are made just as welcome as their owners, there were some nice little touches for the dogs. There were also a few little warm welcome touches for the humans too. The rooms are all very clean and well equiped. We used the oven/dishwasher a few times and everything was straight forward to use. There is a fire place in the sitting room that was used (it was fairly cold the week we were on holiday!). Upstairs the bedrooms are all of a good size and the beds are very comfy. Due to the cottage location its very quiet so no traffic noise. There is a really nice garden space to the front and the back which on good summer days would be lovely to sit out on. The cottage is a bit off the beaten track with the two nearest towns being Appleby and Kirkby Stephen which are approx 10mins drive away. Both of these towns have a good selection of places to eat and shop, appleby probably being the more touristy with nicer gift shops but Kirkby Stephen has better food shopping options to stock up for the week and also more eating out options. Overall the location is good for reaching various places, we took a trip into Yorkshire, the Lake district and the pennines which are all within easy reach. There weren't really any negatives, the only thing we thought would be beneficial would be a dog guard for the stairs just to help stop them going up their at night time, i guess this would also be useful for families with younger children. Overall Glenridding comes with much approval and especially for dog owners it's the haven you've been looking for!

March 2016
The welcome from the owners was lovely - they had the house warm, ready and it was spotless. Nothing was too much trouble, yet they didn't bother us at all despite being next door. There were some lovely local walks from the door which was not mentioned in the description.

We particularly enjoyed the warmth and comfort of the Cottage. It was spacious and we had everything we needed. The lounge was a good size with a great wood burning fire. We loved the small 'snug', it was great for putting your feet up and relaxing/reading whilst looking out onto the garden and fields beyond.

We recently stayed at this cottage for 1 week (3 adults, 2 kids and 1 dog). The cottage is very clean and has everything you would need. We liked the wood burning fire in the lounge. There is a small reading snug which was so relaxing with a great view. Large utility room with washer/ironing board etc. This was a great room to dump all your coats and boots when you came back from a long walk. The cottage is a short drive to lots of great places like The Lakes, The Yorkshire Dales and many country villages etc. The owners, Allyson ad Mark next door were very friendly and on hand if you needed anything.

September 2015
Spacious cottage in North Pennines and easy for Ullswater. Décor, furniture and gardens are lovely. The rear garden is large and enclosed with views of hills, also containing a gas bbq. Bedrooms are a good size with plenty of storage. Nice little snug to sit and read or browse, which is just off the kitchen. Large utility room, which is great for the dog. Don't think that this place will be tatty because of dogs, its not, its spotless. The Wi-Fi is excellent too.

August 2015
The Cottage was just what we wanted. We were made to feel very welcome and relaxed from the moment we stepped in. It is decorated and furnished beautifully and has everything you would need. Comfy living room, nice kitchen, gorgeous bedrooms and bathroom. Even has a little 'snug' where you can sit and read with a nice view. Separate large utility room is very useful and the large garden with seating is very nice and good for the children to play.

August 2015
I stayed here for a week from 24th July with my 2 daughters age 7 & 9, and a friend and her 2 children. The cottage was cosy yet spacious and had every home comfort you could wish for. We were lucky enough to have an evening of glorious sunshine and made full use of the gas BBQ and alfresco dining area, overlooking the hills. Despite the weather declining for the rest of our stay we were able to warm up with the wood burning stove. Alysson is right next door with her 4 dogs and hubby, and our children loved to see the dogs and we never felt like we were intruding. Appleby and Kirkby Steven are a short drive away for shopping, swimming and eating out. Glenridding cottage gets 5 stars from all of us!

August 2015
We have just spent a week at Glenridding cottage a beautiful recently refurbished property in a great location for peace and quiet 5 adults and one dog! The owners live next door and what really nice people who made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived . The cottage has absolutely everything you need just like being at home with lovely rear garden and smashing views in great rural location. There are plenty of nice places nearby a short distance by car and great places to eat. If you like walking especially with a dog then this is perfect you would be hard pushed to find anything better will definately be going back

Liked everything! The cottage was absolutely charming and of the highest standard. Should be rated 5 star. Our hosts were most welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. A perfect setting for a quiet and relaxing break and much appreciated by our dear little dog. There was stunning scenery and quaint little towns within easy reach.

The owners have a beautiful and high quality cottage in a wonderful part of the Pennines. Everything we needed was catered for, including for the dog, which is rare and really appreciated. We enjoyed both leisurely walks straight from the door and adventurous hikes up the wide range of fells close by. This cottage was one of the best we have stayed at over the years and we are already planning our return visit.

April 2015
The moment we stepped into the cottage we felt so relaxed. Every room was furnished and decorated beautifully. There were lots of special little touches in each room. The views from every window were breathtaking. The owners couldn't have done anything more to have made our holiday better, nothing was too much trouble for them. Everyone we met in the village were so friendly and welcoming. We will definitely recommend the cottage to friends and family, and will be returning ourselves in the near future there.

After staying in Glenridding Cottage for three nights with my family, we were all excited and eager to tell everybody how beautiful our holiday home was! The pictures make Glenridding Cottage look lovely, but seeing it in person is even better! The newly renovated property has been decorated to the highest standard and it really does make your stay that little extra special! The cottage had everything we needed, and it was obvious so much thought and attention to detail had been invested in making this home a perfect place to enjoy your break. The cottage owners genuinely had thought of everything! Upon arrival we were greeted by Allyson the cottage owner who lives next door with her husband Mark, as this is the first time we have used Sykes Cottages we really didnt know what to expect, Allyson was the most welcoming lovely host who made us feel right at home from the beginning, she made it very clear we were to ask if there was anything we needed and we didnt feel like we were putting her out at all, she was so happy to help! Allyson and Mark were always friendly faces in the morning and always made time to stop and chat, asking how our holiday was and answering any questions we had suggesting nice places to visit and eat. The log fire is a beautiful touch and everything we needed was right there, there was more than enough wood, coal and firelighters and Allyson even said her and her husband would help us light it if we were struggling. There was a lovely book on the table detailing everything we needed to know about the cottage, some wine and some lovely jams, also a little visitors book with letters from previous families about their stays, all of which, it seems were as perfect as ours was! We are especially grateful for having the chance to take our dog Billy too! As this was super special and important for us. Billy had his own little room at the back of the house which had a bowl of treats and a lovely letter from Allysons dogs next door welcoming him! this was a lovely touch and really made us smile because he is one of the family! In terms of cleanliness and tidiness the cottage was immaculate in every way! Allyson and Mark you have done a fantastic job, thankyou for your hospitality and also Sykes Cottages for helping us find the perfect holiday home! We cannot recommend Glenridding Cottage enough!! A wonderful cottage to stay in with access to the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales. The cottage is beautiful. We were made very welcome by the owner and will definitely be back sometime.

The owners who lived next door were tentative without being overbearing. The cottage was immaculate and everything was in fantastic condition. In particular the kitchen was fab and had everything you needed as well as being modern and stylish.
