Wow! What a fabulous cottage and what an amazing area to stay in.. It is only an hour's drive from Newcastle but it feels like being in another world. We so appreciated the peace and quiet and the beautiful countryside which is right on the doorstep. It provided us with a wonderful opportunity to escape the usual busy ness of life. The cottage itself is delightfully presented and was lovely and warm. It is one of the best cottages I have stayed in. I loved every minute and was sad to have to leave!

When we arrived on a chilly evening Englewood Cottage was warm and cosy.. It was beautifully decorated with some lovely period features and very well equipped, especially the kitchen. The rooms were light and airy and generously sized for a former miners Cottage, so there was plenty of room for 3 adults and a medium sized dog. Those neighbours we met were friendly and welcoming. Location wise, the Cottage is on a quiet road in a village with an interesting industrial history, and a pleasant pub. It overlooks open moorland, so is perfect for a peaceful holiday with gentle strolls along the river or more challenging hikes along footpaths over the moors from the door. There was plenty of choice for walking a short drive away with a National Trust site and a RSPB reserve in the area. Hadrian’s Wall was within easy reach and the nearest town, Hexham, had a good selection of shops and a couple of large supermarkets. We loved the Cottage and the neighbours we met were friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed some great walks during the week and therefore highly recommend it to anyone who wants a characterful base from which to explore the beautiful North Pennines with their dog.

We booked Englewood Cottage at short notice so didn't have a great deal of choice but were delighted with the cottage - a real little gem.. I was glad I knew about the garden being across a little alley way in advance - it helped plan things with the dogs but it really wasn't a problem. And the access from the bottom of the garden to the stream was delightful. The cottage was very attractive internally - a lovely 4 poster bed in the large master bedroom - probably the comfiest bed I've ever had in a holiday let. We didn't use the twin bedroom but it was also large and airy. The kitchen was remarkably well equipped (I don't have 4 different choices of pudding bowl at home!!). And the living room was comfortable and cosy. Lovely to have the stove available but the storage heater kept us plenty warm enough so we didn't light the fire although coal was available had we wanted to. We were concerned that parking in the road would be problematic in a terrace of houses but it wasn't at all - we were out every day and were always able to park right outside the house. Cannot find anything that could have been improved. Thoroughly recommended.

We loved it there great area and the cotttage was excellent.. The neighbors were nice too and within an hour of everything we wanted to do with our young children I was uncomfortable on the bed so I slept on the floor . The lady in the local pub was very ignorant to us and her attitude stank ! But apart from that a cracking holiday and We would definitely go back again !

Very cosy and characteristic terraced cottage, we got there just as "mini beast from the east" hit so many of the activities we wanted to do was impossible, this did not detract from the cottage positivity but frustrated us a bit ! I would suggest the owner leaves operating instructions for the tv system ,we couldn't get it to work and after ringing owner got help from next door neighbour. I do think considering the weather that 2 logs and 1 bucket of coal is a bit mean as a start up pack !! overall the actual cottage and location was brilliant and a great chillout experience

This cottage really is beautiful. The kitchen is gorgeous, on the small side and very little worktop space but just enough for a weeks holiday of only cooking breakfasts. The living room is cosy and has a larder cupboard which is useful with the minimal kitchen cupboards. Very large master bedroom with a comfy bed. The children's bedroom is small but just enough room for 2 single beds. Bathroom is very small and doesn't have a shower which was a bit of a pain and wasn't advertised. Also do Be aware that you have to provide your own bedding, again this was a bit of a pain but we were aware of this beforehand. Location is perfect, tonnes of walks from the doorstep and a pub a 10 minute walk down the road. Lots of places to visit within a 30 minute drive. Only reason I'm marking this cottage down 1 star is because it wasn't the cleanest, there was ALOT of dog hair everywhere upstairs, including all over the beds. We have a dog and always Hoover cottages before we leave but the upstairs didn't look like it had been hoovered for quite a while. Shame as otherwise the cottage would have been perfect.

Had a great week.. The cottage was really comfortable from the seating to the beds and very cosy. The only down side was that a lot of windows couldn't be opened, notably the back bedroom. Loved the stable door though. Would definitely recommend this a fantastic base and will book again if we want to stay in the same area.

Quaint little cottage with surprisingly spacious sitting room, kitchen dinner and not to mention the master bedroom with a four postal bed! Ample heating in all rooms by the electric storage heaters. The open fire enhanced coziness and ambiance of the cottage. Well equipped kitchen with quality crockery and cutlery. As we are not the families who eat out often, we enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. Even though the garden is a secured dog friendly garden, but did not feel able to leave the dog alone there as the garden is not attached to the cottage. This is only a minor inconvenience. No WIFI so we talked and enjoyed the in-house board games. Beautiful surroundings. We had a lovely week there. Will definitely will recommend to friends and families. Thank you.

When we arrived the property looked very untidy weeds all round the front door and the paint work needed updating. The furniture( settee) in lounge very uncomfortable felt as if you were sitting on the floor and the floor surface from kitchen to lounge not finished kept tripping over it.Would not recommend this place to any of my friends poor experience.

Lovely cosy cottage in a beautiful setting. Well equipped kitchen. Warned to take bedding, which is slightly inconvenient, king sized duvet as informed would have been nice though.

Lovely cottage, that backs onto the moor, with all you need for a secluded holiday. No wifi so the kids actually had to communicate with us which was lovely! Lots of lovely local walks - be prepared for strong, unrelenting wind if your venture up onto the moor! Booking was easy and landlord's communication was great. Only minor frustration was that the garden wasn't linked to the house so we we had to accompany the dog when he wanted to go out.

We thought the photo was of the front of the property and cause us some problems finding it in the dark.. The local pub was a must and so friendly. Would consider booking again although that is not something we do, like to go different places.

Stayed here for a week with my partner, 15 year old daughter and her friend. Absolutely fantastic cottage with everything you could need. The cottage was clean throughout and full of character. It was very spacious. The only room I would say was small was the bathroom but still very a usable. The garden leading down to the river was well kept n had plenty of space to sit out.... A gate lead through to the river where you can have bbq/fires and enjoy a glass of the good stuff. I just cannot find a fault with the place. Some people may not like that you have to heat the water for a bath but we found with simple planning, each of us could have one every day and that it just added to the character of the cottage. The cottage is set in some simply stunning scenery with rabbits and sheep on the field directly across the road and sheep wandering out the back too. Waking to the sound of ducks and sparrows was just lush (when all we hear at home is seagulls). The nearest shop in Allendale, just a ten minute drive away and the nearest supermarket is in Hexham, just a thirty minute drive. There are some great walks near to the cottage and tons of things to do including, Killhope lead mining museum, Hexham Abbey, and Newcastle is just a hour away is you fancy a bit of shopping. Just book, I promise you will not regret it

The owners have put a lot of thought into this cottage n barring the linen, towels n food, I would say almost everything else you need is in the cottage.. .. Including things like salt & pepper, vinegar, oil, sugar etc etc. ALL crocker, cutlery n utensils... Absolutely A1.

We stayed here in August 2015 after finding it on a pet friendly holidays page on Facebook. Having never hired a cottage before or even taken our pooch with us we were a little dubious. However, we had no reason to be, we arrived at the cottage and it did not disappoint. Absolutely beautiful cottage, in stunning surroundings. It was one of our best holidays and we will definitely return, I cannot recommend the cottage enough.

This charming cottage was set in a lovely and interesting old mining village, with country walks on the doorstep. It was a very good base for touring the area, with quiet roads in beautiful countryside - just what we had hoped for, in fact.

Englewood Cottage is in a Very good location for walking round and about and getting to and from Weardale and Teesdale. Cottage well renovated/maintained with many features and nice touches either original or in keeping with period. Good value for money - realistic price for this type of property.

Englewood Cottage is a beautiful cottage, tucked away from the world. Gorgeous lounge with wood burner. Walks that you can pick up straight out the garden gate.

Enjoyed a lovely, relaxing week in this pretty cottage. It was well equipped with everything needed for the week, including some starter fuel for the fire It had snowed before arrival and the cottage and surroundings looked very picturesque. The master bedroom is a great size, with a wonderful four poster bed, which was very comfortable. The night storage heaters were effective in keeping the cottage warm and in the evenings we lit the open fire, which was great fun and gently infused everything with the wonderful smell of wood smoke. A short walk (a mile) from the cottage there is the Hemmel Cafe and the Allenheads Inn - both very welcoming, with fires roaring and worth more than one visit. Take a torch if heading out after dusk, particularly as you'll be walking mostly in the road. A drive in the other direction takes you to Allenheads, which has shops, cafes and a few pubs. We enjoyed a couple of great meals in the Golden Lion. Everyone we came across was friendly. It's a happy place, it did me the world of good and I'll be back :)

I loved the quaintness of the cottage, it was clean, beautifully decorated and the location was glorious. We had such a relaxing holiday. It was so tranquil to spend the morning in the garden by the stream, with tea and watching the sunrise. Also great to look for shooting stars by night. I loved everything about this cottage, I think my favourite bit is the fire, but closely followed by the master bedroom and then kitchen.

Stayed at Englewood cottage in June 2015. Had a really lovely relaxing week. The cottage is clean and cosy with an nice décor. On arrival we found the cottage to be clean and well kept and has everything you need. However you are expected to take your own be linen, towels and tea towels which did not worry us but may put some people off. Cottage is pet friendly and our small terrier loved the area and especially looking at all the rabbits in the field directly opposite the cottage. The rear garden is across a shared lane at the back and would be nice on a warm day, however the weather was not kind during our stay and we did not have the chance to use it. The garden runs down to the River Allen. Fishing permits to fly fish the river at various stretches including the area behind the cottage and through the village, can be purchased at the post office in Allendale village, £10 per day or £40 for the week. The river is a great wild fishing venue for small brown trout and a good place to hone your fly fishing skills (Something the owners might want to advertise a bit more). The location is ideal to explore Northumberland and Durham. Bathroom only had a shower attachment on the bath and the electric heating system meant after a single bath the tank had to be boosted if someone else wanted a second bath. Only real point to be aware of is the total lack of mobile phone coverage ( for O2 anyway). So if you are looking to totally get away from modern life this is the place to be.

September 2014
Gorgeous cottage in a stunningly beautiful area, log fire, comfy sofas, original features and a stream at the bottom of the garden - completely idyllic. However it was also so filthy we almost went home on the first night. We didn't want to spoil our one week away a year and we didn't want to sour the week by having to stand by while it was cleaned up for us when it should have been clean on arrival so we decided to do it ourselves and make the best of it although it was extremely disappointing. We wondered if the owners had a cleaner who wasn't doing their job properly and weren't aware that they were being let down. The dirt wasn't just from the previous week or so though, it was ingrained, months worth. I won't go into lots of detail because we took photos of which I have attached a small selection but it was bad enough that we didn't want to cook and eat there. This was our joint fortieth birthday week away so it was quite upsetting especially given that we have stayed in spotless and equally beautiful places for less money. It was particularly galling that the literature we received prior to arrival asked us to remove any dog hairs and leave the cottage clean and tidy (which we did). It's horrible to have to write a bad review but the entire property would have taken someone a couple of hours at most to clean thoroughly. We don't consider ourselves particularly fussy people but this was just awful. Overall though, it's an amazing place with lots of nice places to visit, great for walking and very cosy and comfortable, also, the neighbours and local people were lovely. We thought it was quite remiss of Sykes Cottages who we have booked through before and who claim they check every property. We'll tick that we wouldn't recommend but only because of the dirt, everything else was great.

We loved the area; so quiet and peaceful. The cottage was in reach of all the things we wanted to do and the places we wanted to visit. Even on wet days we went out and were never bored. The cottage was so homely, especially in the evenings with the wood burner blazing. The ultimate place for rest and relaxation.

We felt the cottage did not feel like a holiday let, but a home that we went to stay in. Very warm, cosy and extremely pleasant place to spend our holiday. There was nothing we didn't like about the house.

We were very happy with the cottage. Very friendly owners and good communication, which is allways a good start. The location is not only very well suited for walks, but also quite central for visits to Durham, Hadrian's Wall, Hexham and the superb area of the moors. Even with the rather extreme wet weather, we had a very good week.Recommended cottage without any hesitation!

This was our second visit to Englewood Cottage and the fact that we have returned for another fantastic week of relaxation speaks for its self. Once again everything that we could possibly have wanted was catered for in the cottage, sometimes its good to escape from the day to day pressures and we have found our bit of heaven here in Allenheads at Englewood Cottage. Its very obvious from the moment you walk through the door that the owners take a great personal pride in ensuring the cottage has a very welcoming feel about it, for us it was like our little home away from home will most definitely be returning for our next spell of R & R. We arrived at Newcastle Airport on this trip and drive was around an hour in all and the location is very easy to find. thanks again ViV and Mac for the chance to recharge our batteries in preparation for Xmas.

The cottage was in a lovely location, very rural and peaceful and easy to access surrounding places of interest. The cottage itself was cosy, clean, well equipped and furnished very comfortably; it was such a relaxing place to be, in fact the perfect country retreat. We felt completely at home here! Watching the rabbits from the window was fun, and we even saw a red squirrel! The watercolours by the owner were a lovely touch! Would definitely like to return some time!

The surrounding countryside was beautiful and the cottage itself was lovely - comfortable and very cosy. It was also much larger than anticipated. The selection of books and DVD's was great, ideal in case of bad weather or if you just wanted to relax. A fantastic introduction to this beautiful area, we will definitely be returning. Thank you!

After travelling up from Southampton, Hampshire, we arrived at 10.15pm on a wet November evening, weariness faded upon opening the door to Englewood, as reality was better than Sykes description. The kitchen is well equipped and a dinner party would be easy as there is plenty of cutlery crockery and serving dishes. The next morning we woke to the beautiful view from both back and front bedrooms, and the garden is delightful with a bubbling stream on the other side of the garden. Misty our dog loved it, would have loved to have a swim even more, but not suitable for that as stream flows over rocks. The open fire in the lounge made evenings so warm and cosy and the furniture is very comfortable and easily seats 6. Lots of literature gave us ideas for places to visit. The bed was the best we'd ever staying in, I have chronic back problems and dread new beds, I had perfect nights sleep from day one thank you. We loved the paintings by the owner around the cottage, wanted to sneak a couple home with us! Thank you we will be back.

Sykes is a reliable value for money company with lots of choice available. The place we stayed (Englewood Cottage, Northumberland) was one of the best houses we've rented. It was cosy, clean and well equipped and in a beautiful location. I will use Sykes again as my first choice of agent and may re-visit Englewood Cottage again one day.

my Parner and I stayed at Englewooed Cottage in November 2010, from the moment we arrived we felt at home, every little detail had been catered for, from the well equipt Kitchen to the fully stacked bookshelves. The weather was bitterly cold outside but the cottage had excellent heating and a lovely wood burning fireplace which made ethe evenings so much more cosier, would definately stay here again and recommend to everyone.
