Area
Mevagissey is the archetypal Cornish fishing village, and is a picturesque place with a harbour full of bobbing boats and meandering cobbled streets. The coast has beautiful walks in both directions, gorgeous sandy beaches, cliffs and secluded coves. There is a superb selection of pubs and restaurants, and a ferry runs daily to Fowey in the summer season. Just up the road you'll find the Lost Gardens of Heligan; the fascinating Tall Ships harbour at Charlestown with its shipwreck museum and fish smokery is seven miles distant, and the incredible tropical biospheres of the famous Eden Project are 11 miles away. The beaches and coastline of the Roseland Peninsula are a short drive down the coast and the shops, restaurants and theatre of the cathedral city of Truro are just half an hour's drive away.

Region
Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.

A lovely house with lots of character! 9 of us stayed with our dog and we found everything we needed and more with this house. It was very clean and the location was perfect, we could just step outside the front door and we were basically on the harbour side which had plenty of places to eat and drink and close to many local attractions.

Perfect place to stay if not into cleanliness and have no sense off smell, avoid lower two bedroom if you do, as smells of stale toilet fills the two rooms as no windows or no ventilation!!! Lock does not lock on lower bedroom and missing glass on shower (Pictures to follow as not uploading)

We stayed here for a week at the end of August. The cottage itself was situated in an excellent location right in the heart of Mevagissey. The cottage slept 10 people easily and was perfect for two families given the layout of the accommodation, The small terrace was great for early evening drinks in the sun. Everything was available in the cottage, a great home from home. Owners very friendly and responded to any requests we had. Would definitely recommend.

This year was the third time we have been to the Old Bank House so obviously we love it.. There is plenty of space and lots of character. Very welcoming feeling as soon as we arrive. It`s situation in the village is spot on. Important when you have a range of ages together. Everything within walking distance. Some people of course walking rather further than others! The one small change this year was the car parking arrangements but this was quickly sorted out with yourselves.

A really comfortable house in a perfect setting.. Could do with a handle on the wall outside the front door, to help getting up the steps. We all had a great time. Recommended.

Lovely house in a great location just a few yards from the Harbour.. Would stay there again but could do with new sofas in the lounge as very uncomfortable. Garden furniture was very worn and broke whilst being sat on. However the owner did provide new chairs once reported to her. The table still needs replacing. Overall we had a lovely family holiday with 9 adults age range 27 to 87 and 2 dogs.

Superb location- only a few steps to the harbour with all the pasty shops, crabbing, fishing boats and ferry boats you’d associate with a Cornish seaside village.. Such a great house with plenty of space. 11 of us age ranging from 7 months to 70 years fitted in well. 3 fridges, washing machine, dryer and dishwasher, good books and games all made the household run smoothly. A few minor niggles which naturally come with an older house. Door knob came off in my hand, a wobbly plug socket, some loo locks difficult to engage, but nothing to stop us having a lovely holiday. Parking at Sunny Corner is fine, but changeover days are a bit challenging when packing and unpacking. Highly recommend the house for a large gathering.

Lovely cottage in a great location.. Everything on your doorstep. It was clean and tidy, garden though as described is reached by steap steps, so not advisable for young children. There were 10 of us, 5 children & 5 adults and the perfect size house for us all. My only negative comment was the room on the ground floor at the front of the property, as it’s single glazed and right on the street, you heard everything anyone was saying as they walked past, particularly late at night on route home from the local pubs. (Best put a heavy sleeper in that room) Would thoroughly recommend this property

I don't normally write reviews, but felt compelled to after spending a fantasic holiday at this little gem in Mevagissay. Six adults and 5 kids stayed in this wonderful spacious period property in the heart of Mevagissey. We were blown away both by the quality of the accomodation and its perfect location near Mevagissey harbour. The bedrooms were very comfortable, quiet and with en suite modern shower rooms. We stayed in the top 'master' bedroom which was like staying in a boutique hotel! Wonderful brass bed, antique furniture and a massive bathroom! The lovely kitchen is very modern, newly installed in January we were told, and it certainly had everything you could possibly want and more for a family holiday. The living room and dining room were also very comfortable, smart and spacious. In short, a lovely period property with modern amenities in a wonderful part of Cornwall. I didn't want to go home!

There was 10 of us and we never felt on top of each other.. The pictures on the website don’t do the rooms justices. It felt really spacious. And going on early morning walks around the harbour was just lovely. This is the second time staying in mevagissey and the location of the old bank house was just brilliant!

Thankyou for letting stay at the bank house in mevergissey it is in a lovely location myself and my family had a great stay.. The house was clean welcoming and a lovely size for 10 people there was 9 in our party and never felt on top of each other, we could all sit in the living room if we wanted to but mevergissey had so much to offer we all found lots to do!!! Unloading and loading the cars had to be an organised mission but we certainly didn’t see it as a negertive as your location was perfect but find it is only right to mension it. The garden has the sun on it late morning till later in the evening I know there was a few comments about the garden and the steps and that did concern me before my stay you needed to be careful as the garden is built on a hill and there are a few steps up to it, small children would need to be accompanied but the little secret garden was a welcome extra. The dining room was very light and a lovely size and it was lovely to use as a family, the rooms were comfortable and clean with clean towels provided, the kitchen had everything you needed. The coastal walks were lovely mevigessey beach was great but be aware of the steps down to the beach we had read up on this before going And is certainly worth it, when the tide is in there’s a lovely place to swim in the harbour the water is clean and very refreshing. We had a lovely stay and would recommend the old bank house

A nice old house in good central location.. It was very clean and spacious. We felt that the owners could do with investing in new mattresses for downstairs beds and a new sofa - one was comfortable but the other sagged. Overall a nice place to stay but some tlc needed over winter months to enhance the experience for holiday makers.

Sykes were brilliant in changing my original booking from Penare House mevagissey, after we realised the unsuitability during an interim visit last September to mevagissey.. The old bank house was the only real alternative having paid our non returnable deposit (this was again not a problem) and we were grateful of your understanding. However, The old bank house which was in a fabulous spot was definitely in need of a lot tlc. The garden :- when you could eventually get the doors open, you were greeted by a foul smelling set of steps that led to a small patio area ( definitely not worthy of being called a garden) decorated by at least 20 piles of dog poo ( how people can leave it amazes me) . We had two dogs with us and after the first visit we didn't bother letting them out there even though I had picked up and bagged most of what I could see. The kitchen was falling apart, all the crockery was old and worn, cutlery was the same, kettle was leaking and going everywhere when you poured the water. Bedrooms and bathrooms were great. I dare bet the owner hasn't spent a penny on the place in twenty years and it is purely a cash cow. Sykes should really go and look at the house before putting your name to it. It wasn't a patch on the beautiful 'carefree cottage' we stayed in last year, it was a credit to the owners and Sykes cottages Many thanks R Forrester ( stayed 16th to 23rd June 2018)

The Old Bank House, Mevagissey what an ideal spot to take our wonderful family of 9 plus milo the dog, so close to harbour and wonderful places to eat.. The house itself beautiful , clean and beds all comfortable. Nice touch having biscuits, milk tea and coffee for us to have. Loads of space and games for children.the dining room was large for everyone to sit plus about another four super touch drinks cooler for wine and beer which was very handy. Thank you again thoroughly recommend .

We absolutely loved this property, There were 11 of us in total including a baby and 4 kids from 3 to 14, masses of space and everything we needed,. The property has a very interesting history, Mevagissey is a lovely quaint little village. the only minus to this holiday is that the garden is very dangerous for young children, fortunately we had plenty of adults to supervise, to be fair we were warned about this in the description overall we had a really lovely holiday and would recommend this property.

The location of the property is excellent, about 70 yards from the front, though because of this it can be a bit noisy in the evenings.. Internally the property is a delight, with all the living areas on the first floor and bedrooms on ground and second floor. It's not too pristine that you are worried about the children or dogs wrecking it, but also it is not scruffy, just lived in. Lots of games and books provided in case the weather is poor, only complaint is the fridge doesn't close properly all the time. Mevagissey is beautiful, wonderful harbour for strolling around, great walks over the cliffs, and really close to Eden and Heligan, also a great fish and chip shop and a great bakery. Would go again.

The Old Bank House is a brilliant place to stay with a large group or extended family. Comfortable, warm and well appointed it has everything you need for a relaxing holiday. It is only seconds from two great pubs, The Fountain and The Ship. It is also only a few strides away from the picturesque Mevagissey harbour. The parking is only a short walk away in the Sunny Corner car park and although there are quite few vehicles that use the narrow road past the house once you're inside you don't notice them at all (although loud voice can be overheard if you're in the front downstairs bedroom). The dining room is unique with it's balcony and voiles providing a lovely setting for dinner. The kitchen has everything you need and the sitting room is very cosy with two large sofas. We had a wonderful time and loved every minute of our week long stay here.

The location of The Old bank House is excellent, being right in the heart of the town so no need to use a car once there. Great access to the harbour, shops, restaurants, pubs and all amenities. We were a large family party and the house gave us exactly what we were looking for - plenty of space and bedrooms (and bathrooms importantly) for everyone including a baby and good communal areas for eating and partying together. Good facilities in the kitchen such as three ovens, dishwasher, an island to sit around and loads of crockery, glassware and cooking utensils. We loved the walks around the harbour and around the coast path. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in The Old Bank House - it lived up to expectations and we will definitely consider it again for future family holidays.

one minute stroll to the harbour and pubs, restaraunt and fish and chip shops. House clean, confortable and bed rooms very spacious. The living room would be a little cramped if more than 6 people (there was only three when we stayed). The house was very well equipped with utensils, pans, crockery etc. lovely touch from the landlady giving us milk, tea, sugar etc there was even a delicious carrot cake for us! All sheets and bedding was very clean and fresh. On the whole, thoughly enjoyed our stay here & would come back!

August 2014
I liked that the house was in the centre of Mevagissey - it was easy for my parents to wander around and go for coffees etc, and easy for the younger members of the party to walk to a suitable beach. I loved the kitchen, dining room, and the sitting room, all suitable for a large party, and there was plenty of cutlery and crockery for 10 people. Even with the slight issues below, it was in a lovely location, is really suitable for large parties and we did enjoy our time there. Lots of light bulbs were not working, this is my husband's pet hate - and the only spare bulbs we could find did not fit! The furnishings were very tired, the sofas in the sitting room were quite uncomfortable to sit on, especially for older people with back or mobility problems but lovely to lie on. The bedrooms downstairs smelt musty and damp, and although warm weather outside they did also feel damp. The middle bedroom (2), seemed to get all the noise from flushing of loos, showers etc and the back bedroom (3), did seem to smell musty and damp the worse. Although the business about parking etc was not easy for arrival and departing the property, we were warned about it, and therefore accepted this - so we did pack in boxes/cool boxes/suitcases etc.

We stayed in this house for Christmas and appreciated the space and the fantastic location. There were many good pubs and restaurants within walking distance and the harbour is a treat. Even over Christmas the village was busy and had a good atmosphere. There are parts of the house that are excellent, for example the spacious dining room and the oven space in the kitchen. However, the kitchen equipment needs updating (the roasting tins were rusty) and some of the advertised facilities are not in place - for example the play station was not set up; we could not find the DVD player and one of the TV's did not work. These things would have been helpful as the weather was particularly wet. The showers need some attention and are not easily accessible for older people. This is also the case for the garden. Some of the mattresses are not so comfortable and need replacing. The car parking is tricky for unloading and loading as everything needs carrying from the car park. We advise making sure that things are packed in bags rather than loose in a roof box! However, this is to be expected and can be managed. We have stayed in cottages with a similar tariff, with Sykes, at the same time of year and they have been better equipped and had higher quality bathrooms. Overall, a great location staying in a house that needs just one or two things improving.

We traveled here for a pre-Christmas break with teenagers and a five year old as well as two dogs and a fabulous time was had by all! We loved the space, the open fire, the kitchen, the large number of bathrooms and the location. Also the style, almost our perfect home to be honest. Mevagissey itself was wonderful too, friendly, festive and wonderful. We didn't feel the need to venture inland at all for our whole stay. Yes the house has foibles, there was a definite knack to getting the toaster to work for example, but it was so homely and welcoming we really couldn't fault it. We are already looking at booking for next year.

A lovely period house with plenty of space , only a stones throw from the beach and everything that you could need. a fully equpied kitchen and laundry with plenty of space to feed a large family. A very comfortable sitting room but wouldnt seat the ten comfortably. Now the negatives!, the front bedrooms suffer disturbed sleep to even the deepest sleeper from street noise and seagulls! not aided by the lack of double glazing, the bed to the ground floor front room is unsleepable and all of the ground floor is very damp with slugs a plenty. Bathrooms are in great need of updating and a deep clean and the noisy saniflow systems can be a little smelly i would expect more for the 1500 pound tarrif!, Cleaning in general requires attention...finding new forms of antibiotics in the bread bin is not acceptable! The garden is far from useable and is a danger to access as mentioned on a sign to the access door! a handrail to the 30ft drop is a must to permit access in my opinion, that said overall a fantastic location and house with the improvements added would be a dream seaside holiday in the sun...kind regards Dave.

The accommodation was not clean and the rooms were on the damp side. The bathrooms were small and the showers poor. The garden, which was due to be available for our visit wasn't ready. The reason for this review is that we made our feelings clear to Sykes at the time and didn't even get the courtesy of a reply. Apparently there has been a change of ownership during 2010, and this may explain why the reviews earlier in 2010 are better than this one. The house needs a thorough clean and refurbishment, especially bathrooms and kitchen. We were very disappointed and because of this experience we would never use Sykes again.

We were looking for a cottage to sleep 10 and we were thrilled that there was plenty of room for all of us and within such short walking distance from the harbour. The cottage is beautifully decorated and has so much character. We all loved it so much that the day after we arrived home we booked it again for this December.

From my initial phone call to Sykes Holiday Cottages, to enquire about a winter break at Driftwood House in Mevagissey, to our final day at the cottage, everything went smoothly. Sykes staff were extremely helpful and friendly on the phone. The caretakers of Driftwood House were also very friendly. We had booked the three storey cottage, which accommodated 10, for 6 adults and 4 children, and there was more than enough room for everyone. The owners had decorated the cottage beautifully and there were some lovely little touches. There was also a piano, which the older children enjoyed playing. The lounge had an open fire and plenty of comfortable seating. This led on to a well equipped kitchen. The dining room was a fantastic space too and we all sat in there for a wonderful fry up on the Sunday morning. The three double bedrooms downstairs had ensuite facilities and the upstairs double bedroom and two singles shared a bathroom on the top floor. The cottage was just a few minutes walk from the harbour, which had several lovely pubs and some nice shops. There was a fabulous Portuguese restaurant just a few doors away from Driftwood House too. We visited Charlestown and St Austell while we were there. We loved the location and the cottage so much that we have booked to go back again in December 2010!

We had a fantastic time over the Christmas period and the owners decorated the house beautifully! We are a family of 9 and the size was ideal for us. Mevagissey itself is lovely too - the only slight grumble I would have is that the showers are not as good as they could be...

We were looking for a cottage to sleep 10 and we were thrilled that there was plenty of room for all of us and within such short walking distance from the harbour.. The cottage is beautifully decorated and has so much character. We all loved it so much that the day after we arrived home we booked it again for this December.

Good Location, plenty of room. Light and airy throughout, and cosy in bad weather. Kids were happy and loved all the staircases and hiding places. Piano was a great touch and enjoyed by all of us.
