The location was excellent for all local amenities.. There was plenty of room in the cottage. The garden was lovely it’s just a shame we couldn’t utilise it because of the weather. Great base for exploring the Pennines and Lake District areas. Very dog friendly too. A very lively stay

Everything was better than expected.. Location was great just a short stroll from the town & the riverside walks. Comfortable inside, not the biggest down stairs space but enough, for 3 people. Kitchen well equipped and everything worked./ Outside the raised garden area & patio area with table & chairs plus a swing seat were great. Friendly owners next door, none intrusive but there if anything needed Excellent stay, we will hope to stay again

Owners welcoming but not intrusive and the cottage was immaculate.. One double room and one single and huge bathroom . The tiered rear garden was lovely but has steps to reach it river was a 5 min walk away with one bank having a tarmac path which leads to the town and the other bank to a wooded area. The surrounding country side is gorgeous. We would recommend this cottage and will certainly add it to our "return to" list of cottages wall family stayed 11-14 October 2019

This cottage is very central for all amenities and very well equipped, The owners very very helpful.. My wife is disabled and uses a motorbility scooter, there is a covered area at the back of house for storage which we found very helpful and every pavement in the town had slopes for easy access. The walks around the river are very good or picnics and well preserved, would recommend.

Andy and Gill very welcoming.. We felt at home straight away. Will definitely be back next year. There are lots of villages close by to discover with cafes and pubs that accept dogs and serve good food. The walk along the river is so peaceful, otters if your very lucky. A couple of very good butchers, greengrocers and of course the bakery.

November 2017
We had a wonderful holiday in Blacksmiths Cottage.. The cottage was extremely clean and very cosy. We had everything we needed, and the owners of the cottage, who live next door, made sure we knew that if we needed any assistance, they were on hand to help. The owners weren’t at all intrusive though - we saw them on the day we arrived and the day we left. They are very friendly and approachable. Appleby is a lovely town, with a historic church which is well worth a visit. There are local shops for anything you need, including a Spar and a Co-op. The local chip shop is very good, as is the local bakery. Lowther Castle is well worth a visit (about half an hour away), and the waterfall at Rutter Force is beautiful. If you have a dog, there is a great circular walk down by the river Eden. We even spotted a couple of red squirrels (which we don’t have in Scotland). All in all, a perfect cottage and a great wee holiday. We would highly recommend it.

We stayed for a week to do some walking in the area. The weather was pretty poor but the house was well equipped and comfortable. It was great to have such a cosy place to warm up and dry out! The covered area to the rear was especially useful for cleaning our boots and the owner helpfully supplied a bucket. We ate out in the evenings (after all it is a holiday) but there are few places to do so on foot. The Turton Arms and the Ashiana are in the village centre and both are good, the other pubs don't do food. The Royal Oak is good but it's a ten minute walk uphill.

A lovely welcome from the owners.. It was an excellent base for exploring The Lakes and The Eden Valley. Everything about the cottage was great and we would recommend it to our friends.

This cottage was homely enough to feel like we'd moved home temporarily, and were living amongst locals like the owners next door rather than being in a group of holiday properties. We liked being in the centre of the town, and were pleased to be part of Appleby's economic revival after the winter flood damage. The decoration, style and furnishings were clean, smart and comfortable.

The cottage was well-equipped, warm and comfortable during a period of awful weather. It was centrally placed for the town's amenities. The owners were friendly and helpful. We would visit again in hopefully better weather. We enjoyed some local walks and the local shops and pubs, and always looked forward to returning to the cottage. It was particularly nice to be able to have our dog with us. In better weather the lovely garden would have well-used.
