You can even take the public lift from the top of the cliff and back up again, saving you a walk. Five minutes in the other direction has you in the buzzing heart of Whitby’s harbour, where fishing boats bob in the water and award-winning fish and chips can be eaten by the sea.

This apartment is a joy to return to, with an open, social kitchen dining and living room. Throw open the French doors to the little sit-outery at the back. This is a real bonus in the heart of Whitby, with a table and chairs providing a spot for cocktails or morning coffee in the courtyard-style space. It’s nice to get a sense of your seaside locale, even when you’re inside, with ships and sails displayed on the walls.
