Being 3 family's we've had a fantastic week long stay at The Station House. It's in an ideal location as it's a 20 to 25 walk into Whitby and short trips to other areas by car, train or bus. The pub across the road The Bridge Inn is amazing, food and staff are brilliant and is a must if stay here. The house has everything you'd need and more while away here. We will definitely be back.

We had an amazing holiday in this fantastic house. It has everything you need and the location is very good for Whitby which is just a short walk away. Thanks to the owner for the delicious cakes and bread which was a lovely surprise. Our family would definitely stay here again.

A brilliant location in a lovely friendly village, with the bonus of trains outside your window! We booked this house for a family holiday for 7 adults and two dogs. It was spotlessly clean and well equipped. The layout is fun, lots of space to spread out. There's an easy, level walk into the centre of Whitby from outside the house along the gorgeous Esk valley, between the river and the railway. (It's more like 30 minutes than 20). Ruswarp is delightful, don't miss the rowing boats, Jackson's the butcher and the little village shop. Things we didn't spot before we booked (might be important to someone else). --*Parking is tight and you share it with visitors to the little rental next door. *The only outside space is two paved courtyard areas, partly shaded, but very secure and private. *And I'm afraid I have to agree with other reviewers about the four poster. It was quite hard. Everyone else said their beds were really comfy though. Finally, don't let the thought of trains passing outside the window put you off, the house was surprisingly quiet. They're mostly gone before you notice. However the steam trains do exactly what you'd expect: there's a lot of steam and puffing and it's brilliant.

Very spacious property. Great to lose the kids in! I had 2 issues with the property. 1. The en suites were far too small to enjoy a shower in. Our teenage daughters found them too small and so did we.We didn't use the shower in the master bedroom as it was awkward to get in and out of and the water was too slow. For a property this large I would of expected better sized en suites. The shower room that was off the dining room was too small also. The shared bathroom was large and lovely! But did not have a shower in. 2.the dining table was very awkward to sit around as it was too wide for the room and it had very large awkwardly positioned legs. But all in all a very nice dog friendly property.

We had a lovely stay here in August 2020. The cottage takes 11 people and 2 dogs, which effectively made up our entire party. During our stay quite a few things were not quite right - the fridge was turned down to the lowest setting and our food in danger of going off. The owner was curt in manner and less than helpful when we rang her to ask where the gauge was to 'up' the fridge setting. On another occasion a compartment in the fridge door fell off when we put a bottle on it. And most concerning of all, a rusty nail stuck up from one of the chairs, hurting my daughter in law when she sat on it; that could have been really serious if it had been my 90 year old mother in law or my infant grandchildren sitting on it. When we raised these things with the owner (nicely) she neither apologised nor seemed bothered by us flagging them - infact she was again, unfriendly and unhelpful. On our return we were subjected to a litany of things we were supposed to have done wrong. Many were downright fibs (she alleged we had broken a window, which was absolutely like that before we came; I remember looking at it and thinking it looked like someone had put a bullet in it! But she was insistent that the damage was caused by ourselves.) She also stated that we hadn't left the house in a clean and tidy state, which again, was untrue - we spent a good hour cleaning round before we left, emptying the fridge and the bins, tidying up, etc. As I later explained, it was not our responsibility to leave the place sparkling - surely that is the job of the cleaner when cleaning the property for the next people? I am not sure quite what she was expecting, but clean and tidy is how we left it. I will own to a mark on the wall and a spillage on a chair cushion which could have been done by my small grandchildren and have offered to recompense her for this - but it's hard to rid ourselves of the notion that she wanted to 'get her own back' on the small points we raised with her whilst staying there. I'm still stunned that she could try and pin the damage to the window on us. If we had damaged the window we would have owned up straight away - we're actually like that! A pity because we had a lovely time otherwise and the property is great. But she's not a good person to deal with and if you do stay there, be advised that you are dealing with someone who is less than reasonable in her manner and outlook.

Just spent 3 lovely days in this beautiful house 7 adults and 4 children. Plenty of room for our family gathering for new year. It has everything in it you could possibly need and fresh baked bread, biscuits and chocolates left for us on our arrival. Nice old pub just across the road and a nice 20 minute walk into Whitby. Would certainly recommend it

This property is an absolute delight.. It is very comfortable, incredibly well equipped, even including cutlery for toddlers. A freshly baked loaf was ready when we arrived, and the whole family enjoyed relaxing evenings in the cosy lounges. Of course, a highlight for young and old was watching the steam trains go by. We fully intend to visit again!

This is an excellent property for a large group.. Although out of Whitby itself, Ruswarp has a lot to recommend itself, and the walk into Whitby alongside the Railway is easy and enjoyable. The property is very well equipped for a large party and very comfortable. Would not hesitate to recommend it.

Spotlessly clean when we arrived, with the nice touch of a loaf baking in the bread machine. This property is ideal for a large group, family or otherwise, altough the stairs to the top floor bedrooms are a bit steep for anyone with mobility problems. Plenty of room to chill downstairs with a choice of two well furnished lounges. The dining room is a bit of a squeeze though. The main bedroom is very comfortable with an en suite and a four poster, the other four bedrooms also comfortable but not quite as posh. We walked into Whitby alongside the railway and river Esk. Scenic, fairly flat and took around 30 minutes. Highly recommend the village butcher.

We recently returned from a weekend break at The Station House. My mum was having her 60th birthday and had booked the cottage for a family group including adults and a young child. We didn’t really know what to expect, but were very impressed by everything that the Station House had to offer. We were concerned that, with so many of us in the party that it would feel cramped, but this couldn’t have been further from reality. The house is very spacious, with 5 very well appointed, good sized rooms, which, and the rest of the house is just as roomy, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Our little girl loved the fact that the house was attached to a working railway line and platform, and was very excited watching trains pass, and greeting one of our family members at the adjoining platform. There are some very quirky, original features such as low beams, traditional railway paraphernalia and a fantastic AGA cooker. The location couldn’t be better - only a 5 minute drive from Whitby, or a 5 minute train ride direct from the house to Whitby centre. We had a great weekend, would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others.

This house was amazing.. Plenty of comfortable space, spotlessly clean & very well equipped with good quality items. Everything we needed for a large family break together. Easy access into Whitby, either walking, busses or the train all in close distance. The grand daughter loved waving to the trains and enjoyed the local monsterz play area.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.. The cottage was well located and a lovely short walk into Whitby. Comfortable accommodation and we liked the Aga and the log burner. All bedrooms well appointed and ready made beds were a bonus. A good games cupboard with jigsaws and games. Would certainly recommend it

I can highly recommend the station house at Ruswarp, the house is amazing, very comfortable, warm, very very well equipped, there was even a fresh loaf of bread baking for us when we arrived,we spent a week there with kids and grandkids for a family birthday, ten of us in total and there was plenty of room for all of us,the grandkids loved looking for the trains, which weren't at all intrusive.. Ruswarp is a lovely little village with a great butchers shop and a very welcoming pub,the bridge Inn. Whitby is in easy 20 minutes walk from the station house and Robin hood's bay and Scarborough a short car ride away all in all a brilliant house to stay in,we are all hoping to go back there in the future as we all loved it so much.

We had a fabulous weekend at the station house in Whitby, the house was stunning and plenty of room for all 11 of us (8 adults 3 children (ages 1,3&6).. It was a shame we was only there for the weekend I could have stayed forever! The house was so close to Whitby and driving distance to Scarborough. The house had everything you needed. Mrs Jones is lovely and I cannot recommend this place enough.

October 2018
The owners had thought of everything that you would need for a self catering holiday.. It was such a warm friendly house, with lots of space, so you didn't have to be together if you didn't want too. Never used an aga before, it was easy to use, only charred the lemon meringue pie!! On our first night we didn't have any hot water, contacted Mr Jones and that was sorted out the next day, he was really helpful. Ideal stay if you like walking, as you could go on the flat straight to Whitby or if you fancy a challenge take the path past the butchers and its a hillier route. Butchers shop in the village had lots too choose from and very helpful. Little Monsters was down the road and that was a great indoor play area for the kids.
Mrs Hardman
August 2018
The house was really well stocked with all the things you need to start your holiday, the accommodation itself was brilliant, and so well furnished.. There where minor things like the back door would not open fully, the courtyard could have been cleaner for the children to play in, these are minor things but on the whole we loved the place, it was a dream for the children and the adults who love trains. The location was brilliant and the short walk to Whitby was a bonus as we did not have to take the cars.

Had an absolutely fantastic time at Ruswarp, both adults and dogs.. The cottage is in a superb location, comfortable, relaxing and well maintained. This is our first time with Sykes, but it will not be the last. Would highly recommend both Sykes and The Station Masters House @ Ruswarp.

February 2018
A great venue that was comfortable, spacious, and well equipped the last time we rented, and that still managed to improve on things this time round.. The images are true-to-life and speak for themselves, but it's as much the details that aren't advertised that make it. Generous with the type and quality of crockery and cutlery and all the other domestic bits and pieces you need. We've stayed in places where the cheapest possible option has always been chosen, and that can really make a difference. Not so here where it feels throughout like a well-appointed home. And lots of thoughtful touches on arrival making it easy to slide into a holiday. All-in-all, an excellent break for everyone, and we'd definitely come again, thanks!

November 2017
had our week here and ive had an amazing time I can't fault, there's 11 of us here in total. a fantastic holiday let on the ruswarp station , seen the steam train which ended Oct 29th. there's a brilliant walk into whitby next to the line. the village is good quiet and out of the way way. the local pub is a massive walk away all of 10yards at least , i can't fault the place if im booking a large party highly recommend. to the the posh southerners if you don't like it and it's not your multi million pound house welcome t yorkshire and more shame on you not enjoying our countryside you can downgrade to lidl for you shop. but for me the place is stunning and the village is brilliant. full marks and more for this little gem

Right on the station at Ruswarp, with fabulous steam trains chugging past a couple of times a day, an easy walk into Whitby about 20 mins, or jump the local train 6-9 mins. Ruswarp has a brilliant butcher who's goods could feed you with something different for every day of your break, and pies and sausage rolls that will please the most discerning. The house is huge and well fitted out with good quality fixtures and fittings, and everything to make your stay easy, the quality of bed linen (feathers) for those with allergies, was top notch, and towels enough for all and thick and soft, Whitby well what can I say that hasn't been said, a great place with history, intrigue, old alleyways small bars, that sell good reasonably priced food and unique shops for all, the added bonus was the Goth weekend where all manner of beasties and Victorian steampunk, and costumes adorn the streets, my grandchildren loved these, and thank you to those who let us take photos, as my parting words give it a whirl take the whole family, oops go to Beacon farm for the best scones ever, and home made real ice cream, JUST LIVE AND ENJOY

We had a large group holiday and booked this property and the Ticket Office, which is a small 2 person property attached to the Station House. There was enough parking at the property for 3 cars, 4 including the space for the Ticket Office. The first impressions of the property were that it was clean and very well cared for. There are so many rooms in this property that 12 people staying here would still not feel cramped. The location is the best thing about the property and we were able to watch the trains go by from the comfort of the sofas. The entire family had a wonderful stay at this property and would really recommend it for any family get-aways and even a large group of friends.

A delightful, warm and comfortable house, plenty of room for a couple of families (but trickier if a group of adult couples). Parking is tight, in the village as well as in the designated area. Plenty of train spotting opportunities, circular walk to Whitby, close to loads of other good places to visit/walk. A lovely welcome (freshly baked bread and warmth of Aga) and a great week. All we wanted, and more! ?

Spent a lovely week here with friends. Lovely house , comfy beds and good facilities. Enjoyed rushing out to watch the steam train go by! Beautiful area and lots to see and do. Could do with a few more electric sockets .....I had to crawl under the double bed to reach an extension lead in order to plug in my hairdryer. The outside areas need a bit of a tidy up too.

A lovely property with lots of character & original features. 2 large sitting rooms, dinning room, a well equipped kitchen/utility room & 5 bedrooms plus two garden areas. Went as a family group 0f 11 (3 generations from young baby to pensioner) & everyone enjoyed the stay. End of season but still boating, miniature train & soft play in village. Short walk along footpath into Whitby & access from garden to platform to watch the steam trains pass....

We stayed here as a Ruby Wedding celebration with our family including our baby grandson. Everyone agreed it was the best equipped place we had stayed in. The trains were an unusual and most enjoyable experience and we were able to welcome part of our family from London on the platform. Would love to return

Loved this beautifully well furnished house in an unusual location with great facilities on hand; a pub across the road, bus stop outside and scenic walk between river and railway to Whitby. Steam engines of the NYM railway passing by provide interest, and rowing on the River Esk is a delight. A good house for those with a dog, the courtyards are secure and entry via the laundry room was useful in wet weather.

Lovely large house suitable for large groups, very clean and well stocked with everything you may need during your stay. The trains stop right outside your door and while we were there the Santa Express stopped, which was lovely. Easy access into Whitby and surrounding area. There is a pub across the road but unfortuneatly they weren't serving food whle we were there. There is also a very good butcher just down the road which also serves bread, cakes, cold meats etc. Would definitely stay here again.

March 2015
For us the use of 2 sitting rooms was a real bonus which gave us plenty of seating. Being dog friendly, the addition of the utility area was brilliant for damp dogs to dry off in and preventing shoes going onto the carpeted areas. The pub opposite is very handy for food, it gets busy so book or arrive early. It was great to walk into Whitby but even better to get back on the train and be on your doorstep. Overall 10/10, can't wait to return.

December 2014
An extremely well equipped, spacious but cosy and welcoming house. Very conveniently situated for amenities and access to the town and lovely countryside/riverside walks. The occasional steam train or scheduled diesel (only 4 a day and only two carriages) made an interesting diversion - and did not detract from the overall peace and comfort of the house. We spent a lovely week here in December and would thoroughly recommend this property.

A wonderful characterful property in an excellent location, with plenty of space for us all. The steam engines were a particular bonus and going out to see them while they waited for the level crossing was great fun. A real gem of a cottage and we'll be back.

November 2014
Just had a fantastic week in this amazing cottage. Steam trains and heritage diesels going past the front of the house had us running to the platform to wave, and even the Northern Rail scheduled service stirred quite a lot of interest in the children (Ok, and me). Ruswarp is a lovely village, with a top class butcher / deli, great pub right across the road (easy to duck out and see the steam engines from there too, you get the idea!), excellent miniature railway, café, river, ducks. Really easy walk to Whitby - 20 minutes down the side of the river / railway line, or Northern Rail or regular buses. The house really is big enough for an extended family, with two lounges, two en suite bedrooms, a bathroom and spare shower room, an Aga and conventional hob, huge utility room, two fridges and lots of space, and most windows overlooking the platform to make it easier to see the trains. As you might have guessed, that was my main reason for booking the cottage, but the property in itself was fantastic. Whitby is lovely - very scenic and atmospheric, with loads to do. We're coming back!

August 2014
This is a lovely home that is kept immaculately...unfortunately if you are vacationing with a few under 10 year olds its impractical...the stated 20 minute walk into whitby is only to the local car park. .its actually40 minute's into actual whitby bay area....there is also an early morning wake up call from the cement works which is directly behind the house 7:00 until 6:30 ever other evening The noise continues throughout the day....overall possibly a more suitable rental for a large group of adults...certainly not the family and animal friendly property advertised...kirsty torkington...family member visiting.

August 2014
although this is a lovely house, it is full of far too many expensive ornaments to be child friendly, the downstairs shower door and en suite bathroom door did not shut properly, the walk to the beach at Whitby took us a good 40 mins, although you can get to the town car park in 20 mins. there is also a concrete block manufacturing works which backs onto the garden, which is quite noisy. if you want a holiday where the house is the main attraction then this is for you, but for a base for a family seaside holiday I would not recommend it
Mr Hurst
June 2014
Although it was only a short break, we enjoyed the access to the walks nearby across to Whitby and the general setting. It was very relaxing to just enjoy the patio garden and restful being in the house when the weather was a bit damp or chilly. It was a good base for any kind of holiday, and having two sitting rooms, and a good utility room was great for a big family or a group of different ages.

This is our second year at The Old Station House, and it never fails to make us happy. In fact, none of us really wanted to come home, even the dog was upset. The owner keeps a very tidy House and looks after it really well. hoping to go back next year too.

It was my fathers 80th birthday and to have children and grandkids in one house was very special. The real beauty was the space, it allowed us to eat and socialise but also have our own space - from the utility room, to the warm kitchen, to the eating area and the sanctuary of the back sitting room.

A dream house, just as a station house would be imagined, even to the trains stopping at the station. The house was warm and cosy, with enough rooms to prevent a family of eleven getting on top of each other. The Aga, woodburner, pub across the road and the Santa Special train trip made our whole experience at the Station House unforgettable. A must rent property for all train lovers, young and old.

Good spacious accommodation. The aga in the kitchen was brilliant. However, the second double bedroom was a bit cramped. The pub over the road offered good reasonably priced food, and you only had to stagger across the road.

May 2013
The cottage was perfectly based in an ideal location, just a short 40 minute walk from Whitby. It was great having the train literally on the 'doorstep' and we were lucky to see steam trains throughout our week at the beginning of May. The courtyard area was a real sun-trap and perfect for a family BBQ.

This is the second time we have stayed here and have already booked again for next year! The house is in an ideal position, just a short walk from Whitby. Our granddaughter loved the trains literally passing the front door and was even more impressed when we actually boarded one for the short ride into Whitby. The rooms are spacious and well equipped kitchen. The owner even supplied bubble bath, which was a nice touch and there was a brand new BBQ which we were fortunate to use twice in the lovely enclosed, sunny courtyard.

We visited as our family of 5 plus my parents. There was more than enough room for all of us with 2 large living rooms and 5 bedrooms. Having steam trains pass our window never got boring! There's a picturesque mile and a half walk into Whitby alongside the tracks, and Ruswarp is a perfect base to explore the coast and the moors. The house itself on three floors is stunning. We had fun using the aga and log fire, there are numerous bathrooms and comfortable beds. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this fantastic house.

This was our third visit to the Station House. It is such a beautiful, relaxing place to stay and very well equipped. Our boys loved seeing the trains whizz past the windows. It's brilliant that you can now walk into Whitby along the railway line too.

The house is beautiful. It is well-furnished and has lost of plants, pictures on the walls and ornaments - you really feel like you are at home. I have already recommended this property to friends and would love to come back again. I wish there were more properties like this.

My wife and I took our 2 grown up children and their children to the holiday cottage for a week. The 2 four year old children thought it was marvelous that they could stand on the platform, watch steam trains go by and wave to the driver and passengers. There is a picturesque walk into Whitby with the railway line on your left and the River Esk on your right which takes about 20 minutes. The house is large and well furnished and we had a wonderful time there.

The house was very spacious and the children did not get under our feet. The house had lots of books, games and jigsaws to keep them happy. The steam trains passing the front window was a great attraction for the children as was the pub across the road for the adults.

We booked this property for my brother's 40th birthday as he is a rail enthusiast. The house is amazing. There is so much room for everyone (8 of us) and the furnishings are exquisite! Everywhere was spotlessly clean and, despite the house being so big, it was very warm throughout, we visited in December. It was also lovely to be able to bring the 2 family dogs!

This was the most money we had ever spent on a self-catering holiday. We chose the Station house as somewhere magical to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. The agar was a first time experience which created delicious breakfasts and, at the time of our stay, the Bridge Inn kept a good pint and served hot food. I thought my eighteen month old granddaughter would be too young to appreciate the steam trains but she soon had us all running out to wave to the choo-choo! We did not resent one pence of our outlay. The only problem was having to come home. We did not want to come home.

The Station House and the village of Ruswarp were beautiful and I'm already planning to return next year. The location of the Bridge Inn was excellent too! Being able to walk out onto the station platform and watch the steam trains go by was worth the cost of holiday itself.

The Station House is brilliant for a large family but equally as good if there are just a few of you. There were only 5 of us staying so there was plenty of room for us all. The house is well equipped and is very dog friendly with an enclosed paved area at the rear. The aga took a bit of getting used to but is lovely to sit next to on a chilly night with a good book. The sofa in the main living room looks comfy but needs some re-upholstering, you nearly sink on the floor! We met the owners on the last day, very friendly people.
