A little further afield are the bustling Tyne towns of Newcastle and Durham, both excellent for their great shops, markets, restaurants and bars. Durham is also famous for its majestic 12th-century cathedral, medieval castle and university – the third oldest in England. Below the castle and cathedral are the wooded banks of the River Wear, where riverside walks can be enjoyed, passing a succession of elegant bridges with fine vantage points over the town.
