Tar ar ais description

Holiday home
Tar ar ais is a detached thatched cottage near the village of Lettermacaward just eight miles from Dungloe. The cottage sleeps six people and has two double bedrooms, one twin with en-suite shower room and a family bathroom. Also in the cottage is a fitted kitchen with dining area and a sitting room with open fire. Outside is ample off road parking and a shared front lawned garden. Situated on the west coast of County Donegal, Tar ar ais is a lovely family holiday cottage from which to explore this beautiful part of the country.

Area
The small village of Lettermacaward is on the beautiful west coast of County Donegal, and is home to shops, pubs and lovely sandy beaches. Dooey Beach is remote and secluded, and has great choppy surf, ideal for watersports. A fantastic little village all year round.

Region
The West of Ireland conjures up many images; thatched, whitewashed cottages, a flock of sheep on a narrow road, an emerald green field with a stone wall, or the Atlantic waves crashing into towering cliffs and rocky shores.

Amenities
Oil central heating with open turf fire. Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, dishwasher, TV with Saorview, DVD, selection of books and games. Fuel, power and starter pack for fire inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Ample off road parking. Front lawned garden and rear graveled area with stream, furniture and BBQ. Two small well-behaved dogs welcome. Sorry, no smoking. Shop and pub 3 miles. Note: Due to a stream in the gardens, children and pets must be supervised at all times.

After we booked the cottage, came across the previous review and were worried but have just arrived at Tar Ar Ais and have to say the previous reviewer is talking rubbish. The cottage is 500 yards from the main road, which isnt exactly busy, Sweeney's hardware store is small by anyone's standards, the views are delightful and everything works fine indoors. I would not normally write a review so soon after arrival but want to contradict a malicious review without delay.

We booked to stay here for a week in April 2019, attracted by the description indicating a rural idyll and attractive cottage. Well....what the photos don't show you is that the cottage is just off a main road; it's very close to a big ugly hardware/ DIY store currently getting an extension built; the 'view' out the back is marred by a what seems to be a blockhouse bunker with some kind of exhaust vent in it (very close to the outdoor sitting/ eating area); the row of houses opposite, one of which has a rusty cement mixer and rusty tipper truck in their front garden (that's your view), and the view out the front of the cottage includes a big concrete cattle shed with corrugated steel roof....When we arrived, there was lots of workmen in the other cottage beside this one. Ours had just been freshly painted and the mess they made of it was clear...the smoke detectors had all been painted over and so didn't work (worrying in a thatched cottage with open fire and two young kids), the cooker didn't work properly, the rear door didn't lock properly, bathroom fittings fell off the walls..no light bulbs in the lights. I then had to help the elderly electrician who'd been booked in by the owner to sort these things out before we arrived but didn't get there till late evening on the day of our arrival. None of the smoke detectors could be fixed, so all had to be disconnected from the mains, the cooker got fixed eventually so we could feed the kids after all, light bulbs didn't fit the light fittings......We had to cut short our holiday anyway for other reasons besides the cottage not being up to standard, but I couldn't really recommend this. I would avoid it.

This is a lovely cottage with a big garden and in beautiful surroundings.. The open fire made for very cozy evenings on cooler days and when the sun was out we were sitting outside overlooking the sea. Gorgeous! Within a close driving distance are the most spectacular beaches for walks and swims and there are several other things to do apart from that too.

This cottage was beautiful, and every bit as nice as it looked on the website.. It was immaculate and had been perfectly prepared by the house keeper Eileen. It was a priviledge to have been allowed to stay here.

As I wrote on the other cottage, couldn't have been happier, we rented both cottages for the week, the houses are beautifully restored, the location is fantastic, don't miss a ride on the back road outside the house up to Crohy Head and Maghery beach, although road is a little narrow, even for Donegal, the views were spectacular.. Hope to go back again for another family reunion, from 18 to 65, all had a wonderful stay!

Really beautiful cottage, very well maintained with attention to detail.. Lovely furnishings, more like a real home than just a place to stay. Would go back.

The local Mary from Dungloe festival was in progress during my stay and the cottage was a very convenient location for attending events.. The setting was extremely peaceful and relaxing.

This is a beautifully restored old cottage.. Very comfortable with all mod cons yet keeping it's charm and character. If you are looking for a holiday filled with sandy beaches, scenic walks and central location with comfort to return to at the end of your day then I highly recommend Tar Ar Ais. We had a wonderful stay and hope to return.

Directions from Glenties are vital as most visitors are coming from that direction.. No point in mentioning Sweeneys Hardware as this is not visible in the dark.

A beautiful cottage in lovely surroundings, it had everything we needed and was warm and cosy. In a good central location for exploring Donegal.
