Tucked away in a typical street in Alfama, this apartment offers a quiet escape in one of Lisbon's most emblematic neighbourhoods. The building is on a steep hill, but the good news is, you're halfway up to the Castle already (it’s a two-minute walk away). Heading downhill takes you to the fado bars and local restaurants of the old quarter in just a few footsteps. Inside the apartment is a calming haven away from the city noise. A dash of polished cement here, wooden textures there, and an intimate bedroom that ensures a good night's sleep – the modern design works wonders with the old surroundings. It’s not often we highlight a bathroom, but this one with its wall of ferns and Japanese zen-like grey walls feels a bit special.
Home truths: *There is no elevator to this first-floor home – those with limited mobility or heavy suitcases take note
*As with most homes in Alfama, the WiFi isn't super fast – we measured 7mbps when we visited
*Although the kitchen is well-equipped with appliances, it doesn't have the basic cooking ingredients
*The plants in the bathroom are plastic, but still look the part
*It's an easy stroll downhill to the Old Quarter, but a slog back up the hill to the apartment
