I would not recommend staying in Eastry Cottage. We were met with an overwhelming smell of fake diffusers which was to mask the smell of damp. The fridge/freezer was in the middle of the kitchen which didn't create a good first impression and had to be moved back to it's correct place. In the evening slugs appeared on the kitchen floor, cupboards and from under the washing machine. The bathroom, bedroom and twin room had mould and damp. This is completely unacceptable and very unhealthy. I called Sykes the following morning and had to keep calling for updates and was eventually told the owner had been given until 5pm to respond. Later that evening I was told the owner would be coming to the cottage by 10am the next day to rectify the problems. At 10.30 I called Sykes who rang the owner who told them they wouldn't be coming! There was one cloth to clean the dishes and as the cottage was so unclean, I had to clean the bathroom with kitchen roll! I also cleaned the cutlery, mugs, glasses and plates so it was cleaner when we left than when we arrived! We were given a full refund in the end after spending money to travel to and from home, staying in to wait for the owner who was never coming and not enjoying our stay in the worst holiday cottage I've ever been in. I've stayed in a lot of cottages with Sykes and they've all been lovely. Eastry Cottage is most definitely not!

We have stayed at Eastry before and had a lovely stay, but this time around the shower was broken and at 6`5" tall a standard bath is next to useless.. On arrival the house was clean but the kitchen utensils and general kitchen cupboard items where dirty, all needed fully washing taking up the first few hours of the stay.

Good location.. There is one parking space but cottage is on very narrow lane, so we found it difficult to park and easier to leave car. So hard to get back in space especially at weekend as the lane gets very very busy with cars Instruction manuals left for appliances but not very easy to follow particularly cooker and gas fire. Gas fire kept going out on it's own. So we didnt trust it. Although owner did assure it was safe. Wifi connection good,

We loved Castleton and especially enjoyed our hike.. Eastry Cottage is located right near the entrance to Cave Dale, a ravine/dale often a part of mapped walks. The hike up was lovely and a little challenging for us. One caution is make sure you know your route well before heading out and take along a good map that marks the terrain. Paths are well trodden, but not well marked. In December the weather was not too cold, but damp with rain possible for some part of every day - plan for that. Good waterproof hiking boots are a must, as you will be walking on rocky, wet paths. Eastry Cottage was lovely, but not fancy - which was OK with us. We had planned to cook more, but found the availability of groceries limited. Fortunately there were many excellent dining options in Castleton. The host provided some lovely Christmas decorations and fresh flowers on the dining table - we really appreciated that as our visit was near Christmas. There were eggs and milk awaiting us in the refrigerator and served as our breakfast the first morning. The kitchen provided the basics as far as pots, pans, dishes, utensils and included 2 kitchen towels, dish soap, salt and pepper, instant coffee, tea bags. We did not find the extra silverware and dishes until we were leaving. Look for that next to the dining table. We were thankful for the washing machine - as we got very muddy in our hikes. We arrived by public transport (train to Hope Valley and bus to Castleton) and managed without a car, but I got the sense that most vacationers in the village did have cars.

A lovely cottage in the centre of Castleton.. Plenty of pubs, cafés, walks and a good village shop within a few minutes walk, or less. Only 1 very small "negative", the low doorway to the 2nd bedroom. I know there is nothing that can be done about it, but you do have to duck. (and remember to duck). Other than that a great place and I would definitely go again.

The property is very convenient for the village of Castleton and surrounding walking area.. Its warm cosy atmosphere was very much welcomed after a days walking in snowy sub zero temperatures. We had great fun walking in the snow knowing we had a great base to return to each evening.

We had a great week in Eastry Cottage, a real rest which is just what we needed.. When I walked through the door I thought, 'I could live here', which I rarely feel with holiday lets, and I got a real sense that Rebecca and her mum genuinely care about their guests and do what they can to help. The downstairs room is spacious and comfortable, the kitchen small but adequate, and the bedrooms again comfortable (we stayed in the twin rooms and the beds were too hard for us but I notice in another review another guest appreciated this so it's a matter of taste!). The house was warm and welcoming and while the decoration is a bit dated we really felt at home and that we could switch off and enjoy the area. I will recommend to friends. Thank you.

Lovely little cottage, nicely located and only a very short walk to the pubs and tea rooms of the village.. Didn't need to use the car at all, walks straight from the front door and some interesting attractions well within walking distance such as the caverns etc. The cottage was warm and comfortable with the added advantage of milk and eggs provided on arrival and a fire already lit in the fire place.

Eastry Cottage was warm and welcoming on arrival, and we appreciated the eggs and milk in the fridge.. Thank you. The flowers were a nice extra touch. The bed was comfortable so we slept well. WiFi and TV reception was good, and the new hob in the kitchen super-efficient and easy to operate. The little patio garden offered a secluded sitting-out area but the very steep steps were rather precarious for the elderly. We very much enjoyed our week in the Peak District and would be happy to recommend Eastry Cottage to other holiday makers.

We stayed in Eastry Cottage 25 May - 1 June, there were three of us, me, my husband and 9 year old daughter. We arrived very late on the Friday night after driving up after work. We were greeted by a warm, well lit cottage which was much appreciated after the the long drive. The owner had left some milk and eggs in the fridge for us also. The cottage was very clean with fresh flowers in the living room which was a nice little touch. The living room was cosy with comfortable sofa, smart tv with freeview so was nice to relax in the evening after our all day country walks. The beds were also extremely comfortable, something I usually have problems with due to a bad back, but the mattresses were firm. We were very lucky with the weather so took advantage of the small patio area with a glass of wine a couple of evenings with the stunning view of Mam Tor in the distance. We met the owner on our departure and she was very lovely. As a family we have been to Castleton many times before and all in all this is one of the best places we have stayed. We will certainly stay here again for a week's holiday.

We really enjoyed our stay at Eastry Cottage.. The location is second to none, just a couple of minutes walk to the shops, the pubs or many famous walks; the Cave Dale route is literally 30 seconds from the front door. The owners were really friendly in their communications and everything worked like clockwork for us. An excellent sun-trap garden area completes the perfect cottage experience. I'd love to go back, and would not hesitate to recommend this cottage to anyone else. The complimentary eggs and milk were a lovely touch and provided a much needed breakfast prior to tackling Mam Tor.

The cottage was clean, cosy and very well equipped.. It was good to note that all the gas, and electricity safety inspections etc. had been regularly conducted. The cottage was in a very convenient position which was close enough to local amenities without suffering the obvious parking problems of the cottages the other side of the square (yes, I'm a car freak)

The cottage was gorgeous! Very cosy & so well equipped! It had everything you need & so homely. Even had fresh flowers, eggs & milk when we arrived. Also very well equipped for babies/toddlers with travel cot already set up ready for us & highchair. So one less thing to worry about. It was perfect from start to finish. Definitely want to go back again towards end of the year! Gorgeous location, just perfect, highly recommend!

A very nice cottage, not much water pressure in the shower but got nice and warm after a cold walk.. Very comfortable and fire was on when we arrived to keep us cosy. Would definitely stay there again.

Cosy Eastry Cottage was perfectly placed in picturesque Castleton in the Peak District.. Cave Dale and Peveril Castle are just outside the property, Mam Tor and Winnat's Pass are nearby, and it's not far to Derwent Water, Stanage Edge, Kinder Scout and more!

We stayed at Eastry Cottage, Castleton from December 15th 2017 to December 18th 2017. We were due to stay until the 22nd December but had to move part way through. The cottage was damp, mouldy and very very cold. This was apparent as soon as we entered and we quickly became aware the heating control was locked away out of reach. I am not surprised their have been previous complaints and the owner response to one saying that they had decided to allow clients access to heating at anytime I believe was only made (December 19th) after we contacted both the owner AND Sykes cottages to get help. Bearing in mind it was minus 2 inside and out on the first night. The owner was unhelpful and downright rude and that alongside the fact that our Christmas break had already been ruined by the owners attitude, the cold, the damp and subsequently becoming ill we took the decision to move to salvage some of the holiday at great expense. To be fair. On returning home, the owner gave us a partial refund (we had photos of the damp etc to send to Sykes cottages) of £93. Given that it cost another £250 for accommodation to salvage the holiday we still are unhappy. Sykes Cottages however, refunded our booking fee’s AND provided a voucher for us. The end result in our opinion being that Sykes were more helpful and accommodating than the rude owner of Eastry Cottage. We love Castleton, stayed there four times alone last year. It was the worst experience we have ever had.

We stayed at Eastry Cottage on a recent visit to Castleton. The property is a character cottage in a great location. When we stayed the weather was awful however the cottage was very warm and cosy at all times. The lounge has clearly had some new furnishings which made it seem very homely and the whole property was very comfortable. Great value for money, and would definitely stay again. The fresh milk, eggs and lovely bunch of flowers on arrival was also a very nice touch.

August 2017
We arrived on August 18th which was a cold, wet day. On entering the cottage there was an overwhelming damp smell. It was cold in every room, particularly the kitchen and bathroom floors. We put on the gas fire but it did not make any difference. The next day I called the number for the owners, there was no reply so I left a message asking them to turn on the central heating as we could not access it. We then went out and when we returned a note had been left saying that the heating had been put on 7 to 9 am and then 5 to 10 pm to take the chill off. I phoned again and left another message explaining that we had 2 young children with us (3 and 5) and they were in bed long before 10 so could she change the evening time to something earlier. I never got a reply and the heating was not changed. The carpet on the stairs was very old and dusty, there was rust on the towel rail and mirror in the bathroom. Washing up was difficult because the hot water in the kitchen would run cold after a couple of mins so I had to boil kettles and the kettle was so old it took ages to boil. The last PAT test on it was dated 2010! The children developed coughs and we left a day early.

It is a lovely cottage in a great location.. It is just a little cold - it might be a better cottage in winter when the heating is being used.
