Being able to sit eating breakfast with uninterrupted views overlooking Thirlmere reservior was an absolute treat! This hotel with self catering appartments is in an absolutely idyllic setting. And because the water is a reservior as opposed to a lake, no motor craft are allowed - we didn't even see a canoe - so a perfect millpool. Property is set back from the road, so no traffic noises either, and surrounded by mature, well-groomed and landscaped grounds.
Apartment was very spacious - slight critiscism about the lack of work-top and storage space in the kitchen - fine if you're only going to sort yourselves out with breakfast, but a bit frustrating if you're preparing evening meals too. We ended up storing our potatoes in an empty drawer below the cutlery - and we forgot to take them home with us, so I hope someone's found them! Kitchen adequately equipped but not a single sharp knife in the place - had to go out and buy one!
Spacious and comfortable bedroom and bathroom. Another slight gripe is that we were able to hear the residents in the suite above us - we could hear snoring and very creaky floorboards through the cieling - sounded like someone was pacing the room whilst suffering with insomnia.
Hotel owners were very friendly and informative - we didn't eat at the hotel, but apparently the fine dining is highly recommended. It was very quiet whilst we were there, undoubtedly due to several cancellations because of the bad weather.
Overall, the gripes were relatively minor and didn't affect our enjoyment of the venue. Previous self-catering holiday lets have included a complementary, small 'Welcome Pack' - bottle of wine, bottle of milk, packet of biscuits etc - we didn't get one with this venue - though not essential, it would have been a nice touch.
