Area
Mawnan Smith on the northern banks of the Helford estuary is a great base to explore all of west and central Cornwall. It is a small village with a popular 17th Century 'thatched' pub (the Red Lion), restaurant and shops, also a working forge and craft centre. Developed as a distribution centre for goods and produce for the Lizard Peninsula. With the village acting as a staging post for materials that were to be ferried across the Helford River - to the Lizard Peninsula. The "Old Smithy" has recently been restored by the Anvil Trust, to recreate a working smithy in the village. Mawnan Smith is close to Maenporth Beach and the Helford Estuary ideally situated in a quiet Corner of Cornwall, with Falmouth town centre, Harbour and Attractions nearby.

Region
Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.

Lovely stay here. Beautiful grounds and the views from the upstairs are lovely. Modern facilities with a great hot shower. Incredibly comfortable beds. Little touches such as hand wash, dishwasher tabs and bin bags were lovely. So was the Cornish cream tea and milk in the fridge on arrival. Well located for local beaches, gardens and walks. Highly recommend this delightful place.

The worst experience dealing with a cottage holiday company ever. Do not use this company. In early July I booked Penwarne Lodge for a week in mid August. I'll be honest - I read most of the reviews that were visible when I booked, but once I had gone through the booking system and paid my deposit I read a few more down the list and realised that it appeared the property had quite a damp problem. Even reviews from August last year in the height of summer. Within 5 minutes of booking I tried to call and ask for clarification that this matter had been dealt with and that the damp was no longer an issue this summer. I couldn’t get through on the phone so I e-mailed. My letter effectively asked for reassurance that the owners have satisfactorily addressed this issue for this season, .Both myself and my daughter have asthma so I explained that I was understandably a little concerned as to the extent of the damp problem – clearly it is not what you want for your cottage holiday. I never heard anything at all. Eventually I received an e-mail asking for full payment. I wrote back and said that I would like a response to my query before paying the outstanding about (the total was around £1260 for a two bed cottage in August). I received the following I can confirm this was fed back to the owner who advised it would be recified, however I will try and get full confirmation of this for you. I heard nothing else, so assumed that this problem had indeed been rectified and paid the outstanding amount. When we arrived at the lodge it was apparent that this had not been dealt with at all. One of the bedrooms upstairs that my children were meant to be sleeping in had an overwhelming musty smell. Really horrible. In the master bedroom there were damp patches on the walls around two of the windows, there was a damp smell but worst of all there were black damp spores growing on the wall which I could wipe off with my finger. (I have taken photos and video). Again couldn’t get through to the office on the phone so I wrote an e-amil the following morning to complain. The manager of the building came to see us and was very understanding and sympathetic. He agreed about the smell and damp and offered to send a cleaner in the following day. The cleaner cleaned the spores from the wall and freshened the smell in the children's bedroom. This rectified the smell in the room for a couple of days, but it started to return after that. I didn't ask for the cleaner again as quite frankly I was frustrated that I had to be sorting this out on my holiday. So we spent more time out of the house as it was so smelly inside it. The children's hair stank of mustiness when they woke every morning and our clothes were still carrying the smell on our return home. It is a beautiful house, gorgeously fitted and in a wonderful location but really, I can't ignore the fact that this issue created real blight on our stay. I am particularly annoyed that I gave this company every opportunity to be honest with me from the moment of booking and taking my deposit. If I had been told that the house still had a damp issue I would have requested to book a different property. It's as simple as that. Instead I was never given the chance. As I explained in my original e-mail, myself and my daughter have asthma and a damp property would never have been an option for us. I paid £1260 for a week here. I wouldn't tolerate damp and mustiness in my own house - I certainly don't expect pay to stay in one with this issue. I had a call from the company the day after the cleaner had been asking if she could ‘close the case’. I said no and that I would be in touch with the company once I returned. I have written 4 e-mails and have not received any comment or contact from this company. Unless you want to be treated like this I strongly advise that you don’t book your holiday with either Sykes Cottages who own Cornish Cottage Holidays.

The lodge is set in it own large peaceful garden.. We enjoyed the arranged visit to the big garden with the gardener Simon. A lovely garden with some wonderful magnolias. The facilities in the cottage were great, everything you could want. The reason for this visit was to see the spring gardens nearby, Trebar, Trellisick, and Glendurgan and they were all spectacular.

Well equipped, clean and comfortable accommodation but what made it special was the helpfulness, friendliness and availability of the team looking after the accommodation.. The location was wonderfully peaceful, yet with easy access to all amenities when needed.

The cottage was wonderful, we had contacted the property manager before our arrival and confirmed our arrival and details of gaining entry.. We were able to stay for the whole week, we had a relative arrive for one night during our stay. Unfortunately with the use of the coat hook it came off the wall, my husband was able to re-fix the hook back to the wall but being a carpenter he noted that it was only fixed to a partition wall/dry wall and probably should need better fixing to ensure that this didn't happen again. The house was very warm and inviting, comfortable and clean, we did note that there was an issue with ladybirds at the top of the stairs and we appreciate there would be some sort of 'wildlife' when staying in the country. It in no way affected our comfort or stay. We had our dog with us and we were very comfortable with the facilities available for us and also for our dog, she is well trained and slept on her own bed and we had our own blankets we used on the larger sofa so the dog may sit on the sofa and didn't mark it in any way. Thank you again for letting us stay at your property, we really enjoyed this property and staying in this location and the local walks and pub was lovely.

Second visit to this property.. Quiet and peaceful. All very much as expected. One or two little niggles. Energy saving lightbulbs are very gloomy especially in the lounge and dining area. Provision of a hair dryer would have been useful. No instructions for washing machine. Quite happy to return in the future

The fact that basics such as milk, loo roll, washing up liquid and washing machine tablets were supplied was very much appreciated as was the cake! Very different from cottages on the north coast. Logs were also appreciated as the fire was needed each evening to stave off the damp which was the only criticism of the cottage. However, it was an old house so should have been expected. Excellent facilities, welcoming caretaker and spotlessly clean. Fantastic. Sykes staff were extremely helpful when I asked questions. Nothing was too much trouble and I would definitely use you again. Thanks for a lovely holiday.

We really enjoyed our stay at Penwarne Lodge.. The cottage was well equipped and in a peaceful setting, surrounded by gardens and trees. The interior decor was well though out and our dog loved the outdoor space! The only downsides were that the track was very bumpy and the cottage seemed a bit damp inside. Although we did visit during a rainy week in August so maybe that was the issue.

What a beautiful place! We had a wonderful stay at Penwarne Lodge. The house was lovely and surprisingly modern with nice kitchen and bathroom. The garden and surrounding grounds are really beautiful and quiet. All you can hear is the sound of the birds and the breeze blowing through the trees. We had a few cows who managed to get in the garden from the neighbouring field which was quite amusing, but the head gardener has since had words with the farmer. The road leading to the lodge is quite rough so you need to take it nice and easy if you want to keep the wheels on your car. The lodge could do with a bit of a refresh by repainting the external walls and replacing the rotting windows frames, but other than that the place was spot on. The location was ideal as a base for exploring the south west end of Cornwall. Most of the major must see sites are no more than an hour or so drive away. We visited Lands End and Eden Project which are not that far away from the estate if your prepared to travel. We fully recommend Penwarne Lodge, its a hidden gem!
