A brilliant cottage, perfect location and absolutely spotless - would definitely recommend..
Miss Turner, July 2020
It should be noted Richard (our host) made Pail End so covid-19 friendly which reassured us that our stay was as safe as possible.. We were both nervous with booking at this uncertain time but Richard gave us the reassurances we were hoping for, The accommodation met all of our expectations and will give us the confidence to book another stay away,
We had a weeks holiday here to see the new year in for 2020. What a find! Set in beautiful Brassington, an excellently appointed cosy cottage for two and our dog, Freddie. Pail End was immaculately clean and the welcome snacks were a nice touch. Richard and Kathy were excellent hosts and have a very good knowledge of the area. Beautiful walks withing yards of the property for all abilities. Suggest downloading the OutdoorGPS app and exploring the green dotted lines! A particular highlight was the circular route to Carsington Water, just outstanding. Spent New Years Eve in Ye Olde Gate Inn and was made to feel very welcome by the locals!
Mr Davies, July 2020
Excellent find in the beautiful village of Brassington.. We had a lovely relaxing week here in this perfectly appointed cosy cottage, well equipped and spotlessly clean. Richard and Kathy were excellent hosts and very knowledgeable about the area. There are countless exceptional walks for all abilities within a very short distance from the cottage. a Highlight was the walk to Carsington Water and back in a circular route. Suggest downloading the 'outdoors GPS' app and follow the green dotted lines! Both pubs are very good and extremely welcoming. Spent New Years Eve at Ye Olde Gate Inn and had a great time getting to know the locals. Thanks again Richard and Kathy, we'll see you again soon!
Mr Bromley, December 2019
The cottage is nicely decorated and was very festive for Christmas, the owners left mince pies which was a nice touch.. However my husband is six foot and I have a temporary back problem and we didn't find the very small sofa comfortable. It would also have been nice to have at least one easy chair. The dressing table was badly lit and the stool very uncomfortable, also one of the basket chairs was very small. The wooden stairs are very easy to slip on as were the mats in the bedroom. It would probably be a good idea to point out that there are steps up from the parking area and it's not really suitable for anyone with a disability and the step down into the kitchen is very high it couldd do with another one to make access easier.
Mrs Dewell, December 2019
Real selling point is the excellent near by olde gate pub.. Dog friendly, excellent food and beer.
Could do with a new mattress in the bedroom. Other than that excellent cottage in an excellent location
Prof Wood, November 2019
The Cottage was amazing the photos do not give this lovely little cottage the credit it deserves.. The views from the bedroom window are amazing and the village is beautiful with two dog friendly pubs.
Will certainly go back had a fantastic time.
Mr Middleton, October 2019
A lovely cottage with beautiful views, in a peaceful village with lots of good walks.. The cottage was nice and clean and the owners were friendly and helpful.
Ms Mullee, October 2019
The cottage was extremely comfortable and well equipped.. It has been very tastefully converted from what I assume was a barn and is a listed building and Is small but ideal for two people and a dog. The village of Brassington is charming with stone built houses full of character and the two pubs both of which serve good food and welcome dogs. The surrounding area is beautiful with lots to see and do but if you come from an area which has few hills as I do the steep hills and hairpin bends come as a bit of a shock. Unfortunately the weather was poor for us but we enjoyed the break and can thoroughly recommend the cottage and the surrounding area.
Mr Whitehead, September 2019
The cottage is perfect for a couple and our dogs were made to feel more than welcome.. Perfect setting and location. Beautiful village and everyone so friendly. We had a wonderful relaxing week and will look forward to visiting again
Superb cottage with wonderful bedroom views. Nice touch on arrival milk and buiscuits left as well as compimentary tea coffee and sugar. Dog friendly with two good pubs in the village couple of minutes walk the gate has a quiz night on the wednesday and serves superb foob we were made very welcome by the locals the miners arms as just been taken over by new management and will be serving food from next week 11th july made very welcome.
Mr Young, August 2019
Beautiful little cottage, well equipped and in a great location to explore the Peak District.. Enjoying a glass of wine, taking in the view from the bedroom window, completed our days. Would love to return sometime.
Mr Siviter, July 2019
This was a lovely cosy cottage, very clean.. There were 2 pubs a few minutes up the road, both of which do food. Carsington Water, not far away. The owner left us milk in the fridge & 4 lovely biscuits, which was a lovely gesture. Definitely recommend
Mrs Nutten, May 2019
We had a lovely relaxing holiday, the owners of the cottage where very friendly and helpful.. Pail End was an ideal cottage for a couple, I would highly recommend it. especially with to very nice pubs within two minutes walk.
Mr Brown, May 2019
This cottage really is a little gem and kept to the highest standards.. The location is idyllic, including the view from the bedroom window, and the owner Richard was both knowledgeable and helpful with suggestions of where to visit. If there was a slight criticism it would be the mattress wasn't that comfortable but we still managed a good night's sleep. I would recommend both this cottage and the area as a superb place for a break (btw food at the Old Gate pub is good but expensive)
Mr Rixon, April 2019
We had a lovely stay here.. Owners were very welcoming and helpful. Very quiet and relaxing location with a few pubs close by. We went to the Miners Arms and had a yummy meal. Carsington Waters close by is a must visit. Cottage was extremely clean and cosy!
Miss Day, April 2019
Very nice cottage in lovely location..
Mr Webb, March 2019
Faboulous little cottage tucked away in a lovely village, with Matlock Bath or Ashbourne a short drive away.. Beautiful walks surround you. The cottage was exceptionally clean and well presented perfect for two and a dog. Bed was really comfy and the views are stunning, really enjoyed my morning cup of tea sat watching the world go by. Owners live next door, very welcoming and always at hand if ever needed. Two excellent pubs in walking distance, locals are so friendly and inviting. Highly recommend.
Mrs Boughton-bond, February 2019
Pail End is a lovely clean cottage and ideally situated especially for the two pubs which both do meals and are dog friendly..
Mr Attridge, February 2019
It is in an excellent location, quiet village with some amazing pubs.. The cottage itself is very charming and has all the essentials. It is very clean and right at the heart of the village. The only thing I could suggest as an improvement is perhaps a bigger television as the current one is way too small, especially on winter nights if you want to watch movies and the sofa can just about fit two people.
Mr Satari, December 2018
THIS LITTLE GEM OF A COTTAGE WAS JUST SUPERB.. SHHHH DONT LET EVERYONE KNOW OTHERWISE IT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE NEXT YEAR WHEN WE HOPE TO RETURN.
Mrs Plant, October 2018

Mrs Brolly, March 2017
The hosts were excellent and the cottage was faultless..
Mr Elmore, December 2016
A private, quiet, relaxing, get away from it all.. The owners "left us to it " but helped straight away as soon as we needed them. The village is unspoilt and traditional.
It was peaceful away from the crowds of Bakewell etc, (15mins).
Small, but very well desighned and equipped. I love that they don't charge for dogs at all, and we had two.
I think it is a rip off in this day and age when some places claim to be dog friendly but charge up to £20 per week per dog.
The only down side was we couldn't work out how to turn the electric fire on. We could have asked.
Many thanks, would love to book again next year!
MRS G Walker
Pail End felt like a home from home, such a special place and everything was clearly thought out with a huge amount of passion and care. We could not have asked for more. The cottage surpassed all expectations and we will definitely be returning.
