Absolutely lovely stay and ideal for what we wanted.. Staff really helpful To go that extra mile i would recommend maybe a small milk, more than 2 tea bags and biscuits as a welcome. For people driving 4 plus hours lovely to come in and have when you get in.

I've booked with Sykes for over a decade and will not be booking again due to the totally inadequate service in the run up to my holiday this time.. No replies to messages, couldn't get through on the phone after hanging on for hours on end and the website didn't provide any useful information to help with my queries. I totally appreciate that Covid 19 is unprecedented, but when you're due to pay for a holiday and have questions, it isn't acceptable that they aren't responded to within a reasonable time and after many weeks. Feel totally let down as a customer. As for the accommodation - we rec'd lots of information in advance around what would be different, none of which was (eg removal of cushions, teatowels, take own handwash etc - didn't apply). The cottage was OK/scenery lovely & beds/bedding good. Lack of crockery meant we had to wash up after every small meal or drink to be ready for the next...no pasta or soup bowls and 1 of everything else, even mugs etc - per person and just one large plate & 1 side plate which wasn't really enough. Hot tub was OK but jets didn't really do much/not as good an experience as we'd usually expect. Overall OK but not great.

A lovely cottage in a picturesque and peaceful location.. Beautiful walks from the back gate and plenty of space to relax and unwind. The accommodation had everything we needed and the owner, Peter, who met us at the property to show us around and tell us how everything worked, was friendly and helpful giving us plenty of suggestions of places to go and things to do.

Absolutely wonderful place and location.. Peter was very helpful and offered good advice about the area and the many walks to be enjoyed. We'll definitely be back. The only slight negative is that we had 8 adults staying and the leisure/lounge areas were a little limited for the full compliment. The Summer Room is fab with the Hot Tub but could do with another additional settee, 3 seater. But all in all we had a really enjoyable time, thanks Peter. PS the Crown in Mickleton does a wonderful Sunday Lunch, a little on the expensive side but well worth it!! PPS the Crown is about 50 yards from Peter's other Holiday let, which looks fab!!

We’ve recently returned from a girls weekend away at Hoodgill Barn.. The cottage is absolutely beautiful and very well equipped. The surroundings are stunning and views from the hot tub were perfect. Peter the owner was very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for him. We’d absolutely stay again.

This cottage will always hold such a special place in our hearts and we can’t wait to return.. Very friendly owner whom wasn’t over bearing or intrusive at all. We felt like it was a home from home and though it was a difficult time for us we were so comforted by such a lovely place. I celebrated my 30th here and it was great for a celebration. The log fire was ideal for colder evenings and would be amazing in the winter. The honesty box for coal and wood was great too although we took our own, we knew if we ran out late at night there was more right there. The walks around the cottage are brill too. In one week we had snow, rain, storms and bright sunshine. The hot tub was brilliant and we used it everyday. It was well equipped in the kitchen for all kinds of cooking. Our only real bug bear was not having direct parking outside the property as carrying groceries and such In was an inconvenience but nothing that wouldn’t make us book again. Thanks for providing a lovely cottage for us at a time when we really needed it

We booked hoodgill barn for a hen weekend away and I couldn’t have wished for a nicer weekend.. The cottage is beautiful and perfectly set out. The hot tub was definitely a hit with us and even better that it was inside for the weather wasn’t all that great. I would definitely recommend this stay to anyone looking to have a mini break away. Thank you again for such a lovely place to stay at!

We had a fabulous Christmas at Hoodgill barn .. It was beautifully dressed for Xmas and it was extremely comfortable . Everything was of a high standard and kitchen was well equipped . The new Orangery which has the large hot tub in was perfect and there was also room for at least 5 more people to sit on leather sofas. Middleton is a lovely village and the cottage is close to both Low and High Force . Peter the owner of the property was very pleasant and made us very welcome . He also said that if there were any problems at all just to ring or text him which is good to know . Would definitely recommend this property .

We have gone through Sykes for our family summer holiday for years and this year stay was another hit.. Hoodgill is set amongst remarkable countryside, picturesque walks and it's a pleasure to wake up each morning with the views of the rolling hillside. The neighbouring cows showing curiosity as we relaxed in the hot tub amused the kids and despite the drizzle we were never bored. For a cosy family holiday in the heart of the countryside near Low Force and High Force, I would recommend this delightful find.

Lovely cottage with everything you need. Unfortunately if you like to sit outside enjoying a warm evening with a cup of tea the neighbours won’t be happy. Although this is a holiday let for 9 people the neighbours obviously aren’t happy living next door to it. Please be aware of this when booking it!

Stayed here as a family of 6 (3 adults and 2 kids aged 14 and 12) during the Easter Holidays. Welcome was good - Peter showed us around and made us feel welcome. The cottage itself has a lot of character and is in a very nice peaceful location. It was lovely to look out and not see properties everywhere just loads of sheep! As a family we particularly loved the hot tub and fire. Wifi was also good enough for the kids to watch You Tube. We also liked the fact that it was nice and spacious. Location of the cottage itself was good. If you like walking they are very close to High Falls and Low Falls. It made a good base for us to go out on day trips every day with many great places within a 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive. We did have some negatives: 1. Most other cottages we have stayed in have included wood and coal etc for fires in the evening. An initial amount are provided but any more and you need to put money in an honesty box (which we did). 2. Although the cottage was very nice and warm, it is oil heating and the boiler took a few goes before lighting up (quite noisy). On a couple of occasions there was also a very toxic smell in the kitchen. 3. No extractor fan in the kitchen. Utensils in our opinion were also in need of updating. We had to buy a sharp knife for chopping and also after the first morning of attempting to use the frying pan, decided to buy one. 4. Shower pressure is very weak. The downstairs shower could not regulate temperature - it was either very cold or very hot. The en suite shower was okay but the pressure in the upstairs bathroom was also very weak. 5. On the first day we had to ring Peter to report a leak - water was dripping through the ceiling in the kitchen in a place that it had quite clearly leaked before. We later deduced that it was from the upstairs bathroom shower. Peter did offer to come round and have a look which is fair enough but we declined. Overall we had a nice week away and the cottage served its purpose. However, we would not return as in our opinion there are nicer places to stay.

Just back from a weekend with 6 friends at Hoodgill Barn. The house is in a gorgeous location in beautiful countryside with a fantastic outdoor hot tub.the cottage is wonderful, lovely rooms, amazing views. The owner has thought of everything, bedding, towels, tea, coffee sugar, biscuits. We have had a great weekend and would recommend it to anybody. If you like walking it is in a perfect spot, just walk out of the property into the fields at the back onto a public footpath and on to the waterfalls of low and high force. Hope to be able to visit again.

We literally got back today. Loved every second. The barn is beautiful! Very spacious. The views from all angles are outstanding. Hot tub is brilliant. Spend a lot of time in there. We're already planning a return again this year. Peter the landlord is lovely and really made us feel welcome. Lovely walks near by and the village not far.

Stayed for my 40th birthday with a group of friends. There were 5 of us in total and the cottage was ideal. Modern and spacious with character charm, clean and well equipped. The hot tub and log burner were superb. Location was quiet and beautiful. We walked to the Strathmore Arms which is a short distance away and then onto High Force Falls. Would recommend it. If staying with young babies and children the fire place might prove tricky unless a guard can be provided. We didn't ask as we didn't need one but it's worth bearing in mind.

Two families of 4 stayed here the week of the Scottish Half Term break. the cottage is fantastic with everything you could ever need with 3 bathrooms ( one ensuite) and 4 bedrooms packed with character and charm. the owners and neighbours couldn't be more friendly and the local pubs are fantastic . Standout pub/restraint is the Strathmore Arms - take the public footpath at Low force, cross the suspension bridge and go over 2 fields and you are there - well worth the effort the food and patrons are fantastic. High Force and Low Force waterfalls are a must to see . We cannot wait to go back and miss the place already.

Amazing cottage would recommend to anybody and planning to stay again! Peter the owner paid attention to so much detail it was like being at home, he even bought milk for the fridge, tea/ coffee and washing tablets! Bedding smelt so fresh and all top quality. Amazing views from the conservatory and hot tub!! Didn't want to leave.

We were really impressed by the cottage and it's beautiful location. Lovely and spacious with some really modern aspects. All facilities and amenities superb. We used hoodgill as a base to explore the surrounding area including the low & highforce falls, near by Durham and a farm park a few miles away. A visit to Bowless visitor centre would be worthwhile, even for a tea/coffee and cake! We walked to the high force which would have been more pleasant had we not had babies in buggies! It was a real challenge which I wouldn't do again! Despite being warned it wasn't buggy friendly we made the journey anyway, it was a beautiful area and would highly recommend for others (suitably prepared) to venture there! We can laugh about it now!! My only comment would be about the 10pm hot tub curfew, it's not a criticism and I can understand why it's in place it's just that 9 or 10 would usually be the ideal time to relax once kids are in bed and that meant we didn't get to use very much during our stay. Overall would highly recommend to others.

We hired Hoodgill Barn for a week and there was more than enough room for us all! The cottage is beautiful and the views full circle were stunning. All the rooms were decorated and furnished to a high standard and the cottage was very clean. The garden had a fantastic hot tub which was well used by us on those sunset evenings and there was plenty of grassed area for the children to play. The little touches made all the difference for us the owner met us and have lots of information about the area, there was a book with lots of information about the local area, cottage, and useful numbers and it even had a blender and slow cooker with plenty of cooking utensils (not just you usual 2 pans). The local village was a short drive (5minutes) from the cottage and had a co-op for nothing we ran out of. There were lots of cafes, places to eat and drink and a lovely play area for the kids. A short walk from the cottage 10/15 mins there were some beautiful footpaths leading to waterfalls and a visitors centre for coffee and cake! We made this walk a few times especially having a dog with us and the kids loved the rocked area they could explore right next to a beautiful waterfall. I can't recommend this cottage highly enough we will definitely be returning!!

What an absolutely fabulous find! Stayed here for a long weekend for my partners 30th birthday. Arrived to a very friendly owner who showed us round and explained how everything worked... including the fabulous hot tub. The house had been beautifully decorated with Christmas decorations which just made it feel so homely and welcoming. I spent a fantastic long weekend with 5 of my girl friends enjoying the fabulous amenities that Hoodgill Barn had to offer. Peter was so helpful from the minute I contacted him to the end of our stay. stayed at Hoodgill Barn for a long weekend. On arrival we were met by Peter, the owner, who was very friendly and showed us around. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable with lots of lovely touches. Home from home. The hot tub was great for relaxing and there was seating in the garden (round picnic table and 2 benches. The sunroom allows you to enjoy that outside but in feeling if the weather is cool. The village of Middleton in Teesdale is nearby and has shops, coffee shops and a few bars. Can recommend the Teesdale Hotel for very reasonably priced lovely Sunday roast. The town of Barnard Castle is larger if more choice is needed. The High Force waterfall is outstanding to see. A perfect location for a relaxing break
