Property Description

Holiday home
Perfect for parties of up to 5 people, Hillgate House was originally built in the 18th Century, when it was used as a farmhouse. Since then, it has been lovingly restored to retain many of its original features, such as exposed beams and a cast-iron stove, yet has been decorated in a modern, yet complementary style. There is a large, lawned garden from which you can enjoy the scenery provided by the Callow and the Corndon Hills, or simply kick back with a glass of wine and enjoy a spot of summertime dining. There are walking, cycling and horse-riding facilities close by and parking for up to 3 cars.

Accomodation Details
Two bedrooms: 2 x double, with additional cast iron frame single bed on first floor landing. Ground floor bathroom with bath, shower over and basin. Separate ground floor WC with basin. Kitchen. Dining room with ornamental Victorian fireplace. Sitting room with multi-fuel cast iron stove.

Area
It is situated close to the Welsh Marches, the border between England and Wales, and these rolling hills are ideal for walking or cycling, especially as there are characterful villages and ancient castles to be found throughout. The market town of Bishop's Castle is nearby and here you can enjoy their weekly market or simply soak up the scenery from one of the many excellent pubs and restaurants. Hemford is also well-placed for many of Shropshire's main attractions, such as historic Shrewsbury, the charming town of Ludlow or the imposing Stokesay Castle. Railway enthusiasts will appreciate the elegance of the Severn Valley Railway and the World Heritage Centre at Ironbridge offers a glimpse of days gone by.

Region
A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

Amenities
Storage heaters with cast iron multi-fuel stove in sitting room. Electric cooker, microwave, fridge, washing machine, tumble dryer, TV with basic Sky, DVD, radio. Fuel, power and starter pack for multi-fuel stove inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Off road parking for 3 cars. Large lawned garden with small orchard, garden furniture and Shepherd's Hut. Well-behaved dogs welcome, Downstairs only - please bring your own pet bedding. Shop 5 miles. Pub/Restaurant 1 mile. June 2021
We stayed here for a family holiday over half term. The owner was very thoughtful and rung us before our stay and when we arrived there were helpful additions like lots of hand sanitiser and gloves and wipes. Cottage was lovely and clean but the Shepherds hut was out of use due to the cleaner using it for Covid cleaning precautions which was totally understandable. We had seen some reviews that there were no freezer facilities but there is a small freezer that was totally fine for our needs. Our two labradors loved the garden and did not want to leave. The garden is dog safe but if you have small dogs they could get out through the gate bars, but the owner did explain this in his phone call. Beautiful views and extremely quite, the main noise was the birds singing in the morning. Beds were comfortable and plenty of games and books in the lounge. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and all utensils you would need. I can understand why people come back time and time again. Only one negative, we knew there was no WiFi and had promised our son he could use data on his phone for the week but we did not know that the phone signal is very poor. However, this did not spoil our holiday

Same as last year, difficult to get enough hot water just using economy 7.. Needed to boost. Items for sanitising much appreciated. Dogs ecstatic with garden. One of them started screaming with excitement as we turned into the lane. Would have appreciated wifi but it got me out of zoom pilates!

This was our second visit to Hillgate House.. It is a fantastic cottage for dogs. The garden and walks from the door are wonderful. The cottage is full of character and well equipped. Everything you need with the exception of a freezer and WiFi but we enjoyed the peace and quiet. The beds are comfortable and the rooms pleasantly furnished. It makes an excellent base for exploring the Shropshire hills and Longmynd.

The cottage was extremely comfortable and the garden was fantastic for our dogs! plenty of room for them to run and play.
Mr Norton
June 2019
Arrived at cottage to see this wonderful place, in a garden so big and natural, the bird feeders were a bonus, so many different birds and animals in the garden, most of the time in the cottage was spent taking photos from the kitchen.. The property itself was bigger than expected, with plenty of room for us, clean and tidy ( which we do not find in ALL the cottages booked), fair play to the owners and cleaners, perfect place to chill out for a week or so, didn`t want to go home, we may have to come again soon. One thing only I must say, as an Asthma sufferer, the FEATHER cushions and pillows were very bad for chest, had to remove them to a different room and buy new pillows to use while there, just a helpful thought for the owners maybe. apart from that, which was not the fault of anyones, it was BRILLIANT!!

Hillgate house was extremely clean and lovely and cosy.. The owner was really attentive and kind. Lots to see and do in the area and further afield. Local wildlife was great. A nice place to base yourself for a week of exploring. We would definitely be back. It's quite unique to find such a nice please that allows dogs.

May 2018
We have stayed at Hillgate House several times now, it has become our home from home minus the hustle and bustle! The cottage is always spotlessly clean and the cosy welcome you get as you walk through the door gives a calm and peaceful feeling. The large secure garden is surrounded by beautiful countryside and you are only a short walk from the spectacular views of the Shropshire Hills. If you want peace and quiet you will love it here, just as we do!
Mrs Llewellyn
April 2018
Lovely clean, warm and cosy cottage with everything you could ever need provided.. Situated in a large garden surrounded by countryside, it was bliss despite the weather (spent most of the week shrouded in fog). Hillgate House is quiet and remote and yet has good access to A roads for touring the various market towns of Shropshire and beyond. Lovely to curl up with a good book in front of a roaring fire in the evenings....not that the fire was necessary for warmth - it just had to be done. Loved it!
Mrs Nelson
March 2018

July 2016
The cottage has such a lovely feel about it and you immediately felt at home. The garden was superb. It was spotlessly clean and had a rustic cottage feel - a typical country cottage. We loved the remoteness albeit there was a school just up the road, it was peaceful, full of wildlife and some superb walks although because the weather was so nice we mostly enjoyed chilling in the garden watching the farmer at work and the wildlife.
Dr Wilson
July 2016
We liked the peace and privacy of the cottage and the general isolation. Being able to let the dogs run free in the garden was a bonus. The cottage was well appointed and very comfortable; it felt like home almost straight away.
Mr Spencer

Wonderfully dog friendly cottage! It has a large garden which the dogs and the grandchildren loved. Quiet location in beautiful countryside. We liked being woken up by the birds (especially the male pheasant). The owner is very helpful and should be proud of his property.
Mrs Shaw
April 2016
Hillgate House is a lovely home away from home. It has a nice secure garden for our two dogs, in a good location with hours of dogs walks if you turn right out of the gate. The beds are comfortable and have good quality bedding. There is a nice wood and coal burning stove in the front room and storage heaters to heat the rest of the house. We found the house to be very warm and cosy and can not wait to go back.
Mrs Street
April 2016
Hillgate House is the perfect place for peace and tranquillity. There was everything you could possibly need in the cottage and the garden was perfect for bird watching. There is a lovely little walk from the cottage to the standing stones on the open moorland and Skylarks galore. If quiet countryside holidays are what you enjoyM then I would definitely recommend Hillgate House. It is beautiful.
Mrs Richardson
September 2015
We had an excellent holiday! We have stayed in a variety of holiday cottages before and this was by far the best. Hillgate house was the perfect place to relax in peace and quiet with beautiful views over the country side to watch all the wildlife. The cottage was furnished to a very high standard; a log burner in the lounge made it very cosy on the colder days.
Mr Hood
September 2015
Hillgate House gave us a warm and cosy welcome as we walked through the door, we instantly felt at home. Everything you might need is there. The bird life in the garden was excellent. The location is perfect, it was very peaceful with stunning walks from the gate. Looking forward to our next visit.

May 2015
A lovely cottage, very quiet in the country with no passing traffic. Everything was well kept and everything provided for. The best cottage we've stayed in - and we've stayed in a few! Walks in the surrounding area were really beautiful with views looking out over remarkable countryside. If you like bird watching they are encouraged in the garden and we saw some beauties really close up that we don't get in our own garden. A very relaxing holiday and plenty to do around and about if you wish.
Mr Dibnah

January 2015
This House is beautiful, we really couldn't recommend it highly enough. The owners have clearly put a huge amount of work into making it the perfect country destination. Hillgate House has the best of both worlds, with a new bathroom, comfortable beds, Sky TV and double glazing to go with the old-world charm of a 300 year old stone farmhouse. We spent a week there over Christmas, and had one to remember.
Mr Mould
October 2014
Excellent accommodation, could not fault it in any way. The location is just perfect for getting away and sampling 'the Shropshire way,' could not ask for any more.
Mrs Websdale

A beautiful country cottage in a wonderful quiet rural location. Many places of interest within easy reach both in Shropshire and in Wales. The owners had thought about the comfort of not only their guests but also their pets. They rang before we arrived to give directions and useful information and rang when we arrived home to check we had and enjoyed our stay and we certainly did! Perfect.

It is remote, cosy and very friendly. It is like home from home. The quality of cottage is just what we expected, we have been before and absolutely love it. There is no phone signal and no internet; brilliant for a family to get the board games out and really communicate. My family love this place.

An abolutely wonderful, peaceful and comfortable house. The rush hour consisted of a tractor and a couple of horses. The birds in the garden and the surrounding fields woke us up and sent us to sleep. Good beds with no need to close the cutains as no traffic. Wonderful owner who ensured all was well. Very dog friendly.Very much recommended even if it means I cant book again (but dont book if you want a clubbing type of break!!
