September 2020
The cottage was lovely in a quiet location but close to amenities.. It was very well equipped and comfortable a home from home. Would return to this cottage.

August 2020
Very disappointing holiday, the listing for the cottage was incorrect.. its advertised with wonderful gardens and outdoor areas, which we were then informed by the owners 5 days before arrival, non of these facilities were available due to COVID. I'm sorry but COVID has been going on since march and we booked in June so they basically lied in the listing to get the booking, and then the small print of a general email 5 days before a holiday stating garden and summerhouse is closed is not acceptable. Upon challenging this the owners simply refused to even open the summerhouse and let us have an outdoor table and chairs. Their attitude to customer service is appalling, and they are hiding behind COVID to probably save them money on cleaning costs at the sacrifice of customers enjoying well needed breaks. The cottage is small, the main bedroom doesn't even have a kingsize bed, just a small double, all mattresses need replacing, wallpaper is pealing, bath panels are broken, carpets are stained and covered up with poor quality mats and the kitchen and contents are far from clean and fresh..... In summary I would choose a different cottage!

Lovely cottage.. Disappointed garden furniture was locked away and no access to spa due to covid 19. Would have expected reduction in fees as we paid for those extras and would have taken a cheaper cottage otherwise. Flowers and biscuits a nice touch. Kitchen well equipped and plenty of cleaning agents available. There could be a wasps nest outside bathroom window - found at least half a dozen wasps in there daily EVEN THOUGH window was closed,

Gavel Cottage was a wonderful getaway cottage for us, it was clean, comfy and had everything we needed.. Felt very relaxed from the moment we arrived access to the hotel swimming pool was an added bonus with having my little girl on a few rainy afternoons. We will defiantly return my only criticism was it is a little further out of Bowness than suggested in the write up but after a few days it really didn’t matter. Having deer, rabbits and an abundance of birds on our doorstep was much preferred.

The photographs don’t do Gavel Cottage justice! The cottage is cosy, without feeling cramped. Every detail is considered, including candles, a laid fire and comfy dressing gowns, making the cottage feel like home and wonderful to return to following a day of walking or exploring. We met both the housekeeper and the gardener, who were helpful, cheerful and informative. The walk into Bowness-on-Windermere alongside the lake is flat and easy, taking about 20 minutes. For us the location was excellent,as Bowness was very busy over the Bank Holiday weekend, it was a super retreat! It was also a great location to be based at, we explored the ares from the cottage north to Keswick, south to Newby Bridge, and used the ferry to experience Coniston. Our only complaint is that we didn’t have long enough to do everything we wanted so we will return, we will not hesitate to book Gavel Cottage again!

Great place to stay, 2 minutes south of the amenities of Windermere, the pass for the spa is great also.. It is set in a lovely location away from noise and distractions but so close to walks etc. The cottage itself is lovely, well set out, great facilities and kitchen, warm and cosy with rooms that are spacious and comfortable. Plus the best bit for us was the little ones enjoying a real fire to relax in front off surrounded by cosy rugs and the Christmas decorations! Too improve it more, it could have a cot and high-chair to cater for babies, but other than that, its a great little place.

Gavel cottage lacks for nothing.. Everything you could wish for is provided. Even the fire was laid ready for lighting when we arrived. I cannot think of anything that could have been done better. Well done and thank you.

The cottage was well equipped and the open fire with coal and kindling supplied for the week made it really cozy. Lots of storage, comfortable bed and large bathroom. The weather wasn’t the best during our week so the free access to the spa at the Burnside Hotel was a big bonus. The neighbouring cottage was occupied but we didn’t hear a sound. I’d imagine this property would be lovely in the summer with its big garden. The only negative was the parking area. As the weather was wet the small track to/from the car was a bit mucky and the parking area was quite tight. Had the three spaces been occupied I would have found it tricky trying to park. An outside tap would have been useful to rinse our dirty walking boots.

The Cottage was perfect in every way.. Fully equipped, very comfortable and was truly home from home. The open fire provided a welcome warm and cosy feel. It was the perfect base for a relaxing week’s stay. It was close enough to walk to the local attractions of Bowness and the Nab ferry and the hotel & spa membership provided an added bonus with the swimming pool, bar and cinema - which the kids loved!

The cottage was very comfortable with lovely furnishings and accessories. Very warm, comfortable beds although it is only a double and the room could take a king size, which would be the only improvement we would suggest. Constant hot water, good wifi, lovely garden. Just a 20 mins stroll along the road, or via the banks of the lake or through the park to Bowness' piers. The pass to the hotel spa was a lovely addition, although just to note the towel hire has increased to £2 not the £1 in their visitors' book - just so you take along sufficient change. Would definitely book it again.

This was the most lovely cottage perfect location near windermere. All amenities and added extras like milk in the fridge, fresh flowers, made it seem so homely. Would highly recommend to anyone thinking of renting, just wish we could of stayed longer. Would definitely book again.

November 2016
Directions easy to follow.. Arrived to find welcoming coffee and biscuits. Milk thoughtfully provided. A vase of fresh roses added a lovely finishing touch to the initial impression. The fire was laid ready to use with coal set out in buckets in the house which was great. The house was clean and the heating warmed it through nicely. An added bonus was the provision of slippers and bathrobes. A very enjoyable stay in a lovely, cosy cottage.
Mrs Kavanagh, November 2016
October 2016
This was a comfortable, well equipped cottage.. Slight problem with finding which property it was as we arrived in darkness. Also parking was not clear as we had two vehicles & we had to knock on neighbours doors for advice. The garden was lovely but, being October, we did not get much use out of it. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay enhanced by the free use of Spa facilities at Burnside Hotel.
Mrs Dickson, October 2016
September 2016
It was a lovely cottage.. Would love to stay here again. Everything clean and tidy. The garden waa lovely and peaceful. We did enjoy our stay. The only downside part was the parking. The allocated parking was for 3 cottages and you wouldn't have got three cars in there and get out let alone reverse parking. Luckily we were the only car parked there but even then we found it a struggle to park and get out. You do need a little car.
