Area Armathwaite, a charming, unspoiled rural community, is ideally situated for exploring the Lake District, Eden Valley, and the stunning Solway Firth shoreline. The community contains a post office, a local shop, and two historic pubs with popular restaurants providing top-notch food. The village's main thoroughfare, the River Eden, is known for its great salmon fishing as well as for walking, canoeing, and climbing. By the river is Armathwaite Castle, a four-story Pele Tower with beautiful stained glass windows in the church from the fifteenth century. One of Cumbria's best-kept secrets is the Eden Gorge, which is between Lazonby and Armathwaite and is definitely worth investigating. The neighborhood's train station is a stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, one of Britain's most picturesque rail routes, where numerous antique steam trains still wind through some of the country's most magnificent landscapes. The "biggest grass covered building in the country" is the Rheged Discovery Centre in Penrith. Alternatively, you might like visiting Dalemain Historic House, which was the setting for a Jane Eyre television adaptation.
