The approach to this home set at the foot of Vatican City's gateway is everything you'd imagine a stay in historical Rome to be. Follow the cobbled street past medieval terracotta facades adorned in porticoes as it leads you to a hidden courtyard that marks the entrance of this elegant, newly-renovated apartment.
Inside, showstopping frescos hand painted by the owner are gloriously ornate as they are subtle and muted. You can close off the bedroom at night with the dividing doors to create two separate areas that will suit guests' sharing. Though with frescos this pretty, we think this place is best left open, bright and airy.
Peer out the windows or head onto the porch off the smart kitchen to steal a glimpse of the verdant Janiculum Hill overhead. Rome's highest hill with superb viewpoints to drink up the sweeping panoramas, it's a great place to start your adventure in the city – and handily, is just a ten-minute walk away. And, of course, there's the majestic Vatican City. Grab a coffee to go from the café just down the road, then blaze a trail to the Vatican's Museums (twenty minutes on foot) to marvel at some of Italy's most revered artworks. And when thoughts turn to food, the bustling streets of Prati (nineteen minutes on foot) will easily deliver tasty tapas and a glass of something chilled.
