Area
Situated at the eastern end of Dorset's famous Jurassic Coast on the celebrated Isle of Purbeck, Swanage is perhaps best known for its wonderful, gently sloping golden sands. There are many shops, pubs and restaurants in the small town, some of which specialise in locally caught seafood, as well as a jazz festival that takes place in July. Often used as the starting point for divers, the charming Victorian wooden pier is a great place to stroll or try fishing while taking in the sights of the city below. To get to Corfe Castle, tourists take a 6-mile journey on the historic Swanage Railway, which has its terminus in the town and offers regular nostalgic steam engine trips. Coastal walks, dolphin sightings, and wildlife viewing are just some of the highlights at the nearby Durlston Country Park. There are also comfortable viewing platforms and a well-stocked cafe for refuelling after all that exercise and fresh air. Taking the regular chain ferry across Poole Harbour's mouth to Sandbanks from Studland (a short drive away) and the surrounding heathland will take you to one of the best beaches in the country. At any time of year, this is a wonderful place to visit.
