Area
Ambleside, located at the northern end of England's largest lake, Lake Windermere, is an excellent home base from which to explore the middle Lakes, including nearby Grasmere and the Langdale Valley. Cruises, boat rides, and watersports on Lake Windermere are just some of the activities available, and the hamlet itself has lots of stores, restaurants, and bars to satisfy any taste. At Waterhead, the parkland provides beautiful views of the lake and a little beach, while a stroll in the opposite way along Stock Ghyll through woods leads to the captivating Stock Ghyll Force waterfall. In addition to the lake and excellent hiking opportunities, Ambleside is well-known for its yearly rushbearing ceremony and the quaint "Bridge House," a 17th-century structure that has become one of the most photographed structures in the Lake District and is now home to the National Trust Information Centre.
