Area
Until nearby Redruth took over as the mining centre of mid-Cornwall, you can still see a few terraces of granite cottages built for the miners. St. Day or Dye, a little-known saint, was the original inspiration for the name of the village (better known in Brittany). The granite, gothic-style church, built in 1828, is the oldest structure in the village, along with a pub and a convenience store. Visitors from around the world flock to the coastal village of Portreath, just six miles away, for its wild and rugged coastline. Despite the area's natural beauty and proximity to the ocean, there are still reminders of the area's rich industrial history scattered throughout its cliffs, coves, and sandy beaches. With a small fishing harbour, a variety of shops, several pubs, three cafes, and a Chinese restaurant, Portreath has something for everyone. It's just 7 miles from Truro to the cathedral city of Truro, with its cobbled streets and shopping centre, theatre, museum, and great restaurants, or a few miles along the coast to Hayle and on to St Ives. A wonderful place to spend time off.
