Loved the conservatory to watch all the wild birds in the garden, even saw a woodpecker a couple of times.. Very happy to return.

West Winds is lovely, the conservatory looking on to the garden is fab for sitting birdwatching.. And the garden is wonderful for sunset-watching. The owners were extremely helpful when I had a couple of queries. We loved our break there and will definitely go back.

This is a lovely, tranquil setting, but within easy reach of Dumfries, the Solway coast and 3 of the 7Stanes bike centres.. Beautiful, large garden with outdoor seating. The cottage itself is comfortable and well equipped. When the weather isn't so good the conservatory is an ideal place to enjoy the view and local birdlife. It was lovely to be provided with some welcome gifts, and have some supplies, like milk and butter on arrival.

A hidden gem of a property.. We enjoyed a week here with our two teenagers and within hours of arrival, one was sketching the views...mobile phone ignored! We were really impressed with the cleanliness and the added things like hand wash, washing up liquid, kitchen roll, foil. The kitchen had everything you could need and more, very well stocked. Plenty of storage for bags/cases and shoes, comfy seating and the conservatory was a real treat, especially with the spotlessly clean windows. It was a very calming week, we enjoyed a variety of Scottish weather and even used the barbeque. This property was perfect for a relaxing break but still within a two hour drive of Glasgow and Edinburgh for those wishing to see the sights of the big city.

Lovely cottage in a great location.. Very clean and well equipped with a generous welcome package. Beautiful garden with the bonus of a stream running through the end of it and my dog was delighted with all of that. The conservatory was the way we came in and out of the property which kept all our mess of shoes and coats and dog towels out of the way but it was also a lovely place to sit, dine, and watch the many birds in the garden. Peaceful place, despite proximity of the A75 and the closeness of Dumfries. Highly recommended.

The first holiday cottage we have ever stayed in as we had our small dog with us. Our expectations were exceeded in every department. The cottage is fully furnished with not a single item that you would need to bring from your own home. It's furnished to a very high standard and beautifully kept. However the jewel in the crown is the wonderful garden. It's large, contains a stream and trees and offered many hours of great fun playing with our dog, she didn't want to leave! The view of the surrounding countryside is beautiful and we will definitely stay here again the next time we holiday in this area.

Could do with better directions to find cottage.. .. rather than 'turn right after 18 Miles' try ' turn right signposted Tortherwald then take small left into trees before farm... cottage is then 3rd on right' Cottage was cosy and we did get to see the red squirrel in the garden albeit only once... probably lying low because of our dog! Dog loved the enormous enclosed garden. Bathroom and kitchen would benefit from some TLC.

Despite the cottage being compact we never felt it was cramped as best use of the available space has been made. It is on a roadside but very little traffic uses it as it only serves this property and two neighbours. From the garden furniture to the kitchen appliances and entertainment, everything is to a high standard. The conservatory is a great place to eat and relax but also to shed any wet clothes and footwear and dry off the dog. Thank you to the owners for the lovely shortbread and wine! The only downside is that having had so much use of the conservatory we want future holiday cottages to have one and that restricts choice!

January 2018
A very enjoyable week in a peaceful and quiet location with an abundance of birds and wildlife in the garden and the surrounding fields.. The cottage was extremely clean and well equipped and we felt very warm and cosy despite the temperature outside around freezing for the first part of the week. We were more than happy to sit in the well positioned conservatory relaxing and watching the birds and red squirrels in the large garden and this was a real treat. As luck (or not!) would have it, we experienced two power cuts during the week, one pre-arranged for essential works (we chose that day for a trip to the local RSPB reserve at Mersehead) and another a couple of days later on our return to the cottage after a trip out. On contacting the owners, they couldn't have been more helpful in finding out information and keeping us speedily informed regarding the source of the problem, timescale etc., for which we were extremely grateful and felt very reassured. We didn't travel too far afield because we preferred not to, but it is a very convenient base for visiting the wider area should you so wish. A perfect get-away to recharge the batteries, highly recommended.

Great cottage with a lovely large garden in beautiful locations

September 2017
The cottage overall was fantastic, with delightful spacious garden, ideal for the dogs.. There was everything you would want from a home away from home, comfortable clean beds, all the kitchen appliances, excellent television and comfortable seating in lounge with warm blanket and a very good electric remote controlled fire. The outdoor lighting was very good and is all-around the property so coming back in the dark is no issue. Our only complaint is no WiFi and the shower is poor, you need to make sure you switch the immersion heating on at night other wise no hot water in morning.

The peace & tranquility that the cottage gives is second to none, when you arrive you want for nothing the owners have the cottage stocked with everything you need and more, the garden is an abundance of birds and wildlife especially the red squirrels.. Once you settle into the conservatory watching the activities of the birds etc you forget about the time.

Lovely cottage in a quiet location just 10 mins drive from the centre of Dumfries. The cottage was spotlessly clean and well equipped, just the place for a relaxing break. The conservatory at the rear of the cottage is the perfect place to sit and unwind whilst watching the wildlife in the garden.

We liked the conservatory overlooking the large garden. The wildlife was a joy to watch; for the first time in sixty years I saw a red squirrel eating in the garden, what a big highlight . The dog had the time of his life; I think he thought it was a park.

April 2015
Loved this little cottage. My family I really enjoyed the beautiful garden, had great fun with the kids listing all the garden birds we saw on all the feeders. We even saw our first Wood Pecker ever! Much to my daughters delight. The cottage was very clean and well decorated etc. Everything we needed was provided. Not having WiFi wasn't a bad thing either as we sat around the table playing many of the board games provided as a family (doesn't happen enough) which was great fun. We will definitely be using this cottage again as it is very close to our family down there. The cleaner gardener do a lovely job.

The cottage was cosy with the fire in the living room as the evenings were sometimes a little chilly. Having comfortable seats in both the conservatory and the porch meant that we could sit and enjoy the sun and views throughout the day. It was a lovely quiet location with a very interesting garden and wonderful views. It was very homely and extremely well equipped.

The cottage, gardens and location were excellent for a relaxing break. Plenty to see and do in the area. One of the cleanest, best equipped and furnished properties we have ever used. The garden is lovely, a pleasant place to relax and watch the wildlife and birds. This felt more like a home than a rental property.

The cottage was very well presented and on a par if not better than many we have previously stayed in, only one exception comes up to the standard of Wrest Winds and that is The Granary in Chaldon Surrey.

West Winds was a cosy cottage, with an abundance of wildlife in the garden and the area. The garden is large enough for any dog to roam. The owners had thought of nearly everything. The fire made you feel very cosy, the conservatory was large and a sun trap, which was pleasant to sit in. We would not hesitate in returning. Thank You!
