Self-Catering Reviews

September 2020
The cottage was so well equipped and comfy that we spent more evenings in than eating out which we would normally do on holiday.. Great location to get to most places and could shoot down the Via Gellia rather than having to drive through Matlock Bath traffic.

We had a very pleasant stay at Weir Cottage but unfortunately it was somewhat spoiled by the cleanliness of the kitchen.. The oven had not been cleaned for some time and there was a dirty grill pan which reeked of the smell of fish which went through the entire oven. Some of the pans were unusable due to caked in dirt and rust. Considering the extra time we had to allow for the cleaning we did not find this acceptable, we have informed the owner of our findings and he said he would be visiting to check on things perhaps this should be done in between each let.

The cottage was beautiful.. It was spacious, well-decorated overall, and well-heated. If I could make any changes, I would replace the blinds in the twin bedroom - they don’t keep out any light at all. The owner told us that they are being replaced at the end of the season.

Both the bedrooms were very warm and needed to have windows open, but his meant that there was a lot of noise from the Weir.. The washing machine was not working. There was a broken handle on one of the bedroom windows and the fans in the bathrooms were not working. Parking for two vehicles is tight and could have been improved by pruning or removing the small conifer between the parking spaces.

The cottage was very clean and warm with a nice view the only thing I will say is the bed was very hard and the washing machine didn't work we turned it on to wash some clothes after being out walking and getting muddy clothes and all the lights on the front of the machine were flashing on and off very fast .. Apart from that everything was good I would definitely go back.

Cottage is well situated very close to pubs & restaurants, yet tucked away and private.. Spotlessly clean and well equipped. Cromford is well placed for lots of walking routes.

On arrival boiler not working phoned owner told me how to top it up pressure to get it working. Had to do this twice a day all week re phoned owner on Monday who said he was on it nothing happened. Engineer turned up Thursday evening said oh yes this boiler has had this problem I know all about it did nothing and left. People without my knowledge of boilers would have had no hot water and heating at all very poor service. Also both sofas were very grubby and could do with cleaning.

The cottage was as stated on the website and was a very good base to explore the Peak District.. We did have a problem with the boiler but a phone call sorted it. I feel that to park 4 cars at the 2 cottages is not easy and I think Lewis Hamilton would struggle, especially if the cars are large family saloons

A lovely cottage with everything you could need and a lovely view out over the Mill Pond.. The weir is quite noisy but you soon get used to it and the wildlife makes up for that anyway, we saw a wide variety including swans, ducks, moorhens, coots and a heron - the cottage even has binoculars and a bird spotting book for you to use should you wish. Cromford is a lovely village with many things to do within walking distance so it was really nice to leave the car at the cottage on a couple of days and enjoy walking around visiting Cromford Mills, Cromford Canal and generally looking around and about. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Super cottage in the heart of the village surrounded by history with Cromford .... Super cottage in the heart of the village surrounded by history with Cromford mill and Masson mill very near (don't miss Masson mills museum see the working demonstration ) , even the village pond which is full of wildlife was part of the History of Cromford , I have no complaints and will definitely visit again

This is a convenient location for close by attractions, Chatsworth House, Dovedale, the Arkwright Mill, HIgh Peak Trail, etc and is attractively situated at the Mill Pond whose weir produces a lovely sound.. Parking is a bit of a drawback if the other cottage is occupied and we had to purchase most of expected supplies of paper towels, dishwashing tablets, laundry powder, sugar, teabags and bin liners. There were no containers in which to pack a picnic. Apart from these relatively minor irritants, it was an acceptable cottage.

Second visit - cottage was it’s usual exceptional home from home - ducks an optional extra! Cromford still a friendly place to stay.

Little niggles that we didn't experience last year.. Had to buy toilet rolls and washing up liquid and there were no spare general rubbish bags. Getting the T.V. to work was a pain in the proverbial...fortunately the weather was so good we didn't need too often.

The cottage by the Mill pond was a lovely place to stay, the cottage was very comfortable, clean and well equipped Very handy for the bus which makes a change from taking the car.. Cromford Mill and canal are within walking distance. We had fish and chips one evening from Robinsons Fish shop, very nice.

Great cottage in superb location, good village location, plenty of car free .... Great cottage in superb location, good village location, plenty of car free walks around, car safely off the road we travelled by train and there are some great walks along the stations served by the Derwent valley branch line downstairs was great - lots of room for walking boots and jackets, comfy sofas, downstairs loo smallish bedrooms, but both fine, it would be lovely to have a kingsized bed in the main bedrm, sheets nice cotton ensuite shower powerful and hot bathroom next to 2nd bedroom, v nice, plenty of hot water

Lovely cottage, our 2nd visit & great to do lots of walks directly from the cottage.. We cook in every day & could probably use a few more dishes and sharp knives, altho I usually take my own. The sofas & cushions are getting very tired and probably due for a change. The double bed mattress is also very tired & again due for a change. Unfortunately the Wi-if signal is pretty poor & affects watching the TV fire stick which is essential if you want to watch the tv & mobile. Phone reception is poor. I did have a word with the owner about this & I believe he is going to put a booster socket in. Otherwise lovely cottage, in a great location & we loved listening to the soothing sound of the weir.

I already have extremely high "expectations" of Sykes, having booked several lovely cottages through them in the past, so it would take something spectacular to warrant "exceeded expectations"! They "met" my expectations, as always. Weir Cottage was in a very convenient location, right in the middle of the village, close to pubs, restaurants, chip shops(2!), a well stocked general store, and a huge bookshop, whilst feeling quiet (except for the constant noise of the weir!) and secluded. There are regular buses from just around the corner from the cottage to places further afield as well as a train station, about half a mile away. Masson Mill shopping village is a short walk away and there is a lovely walk along the canal basin. We found plenty to do in and around the village despite the disappointing weather. In fact, we only used the car once, in a week, to visit nearby Carsington Water. The cottage was clean, comfortable and welll equipped. I appreciated the thoughtful provision of fleecy blankets in the living room, as it did get a bit chilly, on the sofa furthest from the radiator, in the evenings. (They would have been useful if the weather had been decent enough to sit outside, on the provided patio chairs, too!) The owner was friendly and helpful but unobtrusive, arriving very quickly to fix a problem with the boiler. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage to families or couples (but see previous review about lack of hanging space in the second bedroom - just 2 coat hangers on the back of the door - not a problem for me, but some may find that inadequate). Young children would need to be closely supervised though, due to the proximity of the unfenced mill pond.

Best cottage we've stayed in.. Couldn't fault anything. Would love to go back again. Could sit and watch the pond and wildlife for hours without realising time was passing by. A great break from the world!

Really comfortable, clean, spacious and nicely equipped. Within walking distance of a few really good restaurants and excellent tourist attractions. We spent a week here and didn't need to drive more than 50 minutes to access some really interesting mills, caverns, canal trips, walks etc typical of the Peak District. On arrival we were supplied with a few teabags, sugar, coffee sachets, biscuits, a pint of milk, pump hand soaps in all bathrooms and the downstairs loo, washing up liquid and a dishcloth. Although there is no garden, there is a table and 4 chairs on the driveway which is secluded and in front of the pond. The weir is noisy 24/7 but we found it pleasant and could hear it through the night through the open windows. The second bedroom only has a chest of drawers and as we were two adult couples, storage in this room was limited. It would have helped if some hooks were attached to the wall to hang dresses and trousers. The showers worked well. The sofas are getting to the stage were they need to be replaced or steam cleaned. These were minor niggles though and didn't spoil what was otherwise a really great cottage in a very good location.

The location of the cottage was perfect for the places we wanted to visit.. It was very relaxing to sit by the cottage and watch the birds on the mill pond. Great to have Sky available.

The location and the cottage itself are gorgeous. However I think we were the first guest to stay there as there was a fine layer of dust over absolutely everything and despite arriving late we had to spend a good hour wiping down all the surfaces to get rid of the dust. Also the suede type fabric lounge suite didn't appear to be new and so desperately needed a steam clean. Large fluffy towels would be a nice touch. The other really big issue was the beds. This cottage could be 5 star if there was a decent sized (queen or king bed) and decent quality bed. The current master bed is only an awful double, with springs that can be felt when lying on it. I urge the owner to replace the bed with a high quality, pillow topped larger bed. Same with the singles...good quality mattresses would make the world of difference. We have family nearby and love to visit so would happily return if the bedding issue was sorted.

Weir cottage on the Mill Pond had a lovely view across the mill pond with swans and other feathered friends. The weir itself was very pretty. We were close to a good variety of shops etc. and within easy driving distance to Matlock Bath, Bakewell etc. Had a wonderful long weekend with my two sons for Mothers day treat.
