The understatement on display in this historic house allows some of the warm, textural elements of the design – like the exposed beam ceiling, tiled floors and concrete steps – to sing. Set within a stunning fifteenth-century building, the home is spread over three floors, accessible via a beautiful spiral staircase that eventually emerges in between the three bedrooms up on the second floor. The interior is a largely pared-back affair, with a definite nod to Scandinavian simplicity, but without veering into the impersonal. While the Tiber isn’t actually visible from the front door, but it’s only one street over, and the Castel Sant’Angelo is just a few minutes' walk on the other bank. Elsewhere, you're around five minutes from the ever-popular Piazza Navona and ten to the lively morning market in Campo de' Fiori.
Home truths: *The ceiling in the dining area is quite low, about 175cm
*Be ready for lots of stairs – the house is set over three levels
*There's a school outside so you might hear some noise during the day
*Child-friendly amenities such as a cot, highchair, stairgate and dinnerware are available upon request
*The master bedroom can be set up in a twin configuration – please request with your host prior to check-in
* Though you probably won't need a car, there is free on-street parking outside the home
