Located on the Rua Carmo, Grandella Boots is a great home for first-time visitors – especially if you're keen to explore Lisbon on foot. Situated above one of the city’s most vibrant avenues, the huge windows are perfectly primed for people-watching. Street vendors to and fro along the thoroughfare, locals weave through the throngs, and performers draw in gaggles of curious onlookers. Inside, the furnishings are modest but comfortable and do well not to distract you from the fantastic views – you can see the ruins of the Carmo convent on one side of the apartment, and the Santa Justa Elevator on the other. After a pastry and coffee for breakfast, slip into the hubbub and make your way over to Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk downhill, or lace up your walking shoes and take the twelve-minute hike uphill to Bairro Alto for retro boutiques and the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint. Should you fancy escaping the crowds, you’re a ten-minute walk to Cais do Sodré terminal where you can catch a ferry to the other side of the Tagus – waterfront restaurants and fine sunsets await.
