The cottage contains a family suite of rooms (one king size double with ensuite and adjoining bedroom with 1 single and 1 junior bed), two further doubles (one with an ensuite), one twin and one room with adults bunks which with the addition of a family bathroom makes this cottage suitable for up to thirteen people. Area
The village of Northwood nestles between the Shropshire market towns of Wem and Ellesmere and consists of a handful of houses and an excellent pub with adjoining restaurant. Historic Wem has provided a central point for local trade since Saxon times and its weekly market still holds this tradition attracting visitors from across the county. The town of Ellesmere, with its medieval streets littered with Georgian and Victorian houses and half-timbered buildings, is situated just 6 miles away, amidst an area known as Shropshire's Lakeland and offers an abundance of shops, pubs and fine restaurants. Take a boat trip across the magnificent glacial mere out onto the Llangollen canal or enjoy a leisurely stroll through the picturesque Arboretum and Cremorne Gardens with its wonderful wildlife and scenic walks.

Region
A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

Self-Catering Reviews

Mr Holland
March 2019
We had a great weekend in spite of the weather, a perfect house for a family get together.. There were 12 of us and we had plenty of room, the second lounge which should be called the play room had enough toys to start a toy shop and it also meant the main lounge was left for the adults. It was just a shame we couldn't use the lovely garden because of the rain. I would certainly book it again.

The house was perfect for our extended family.. There was a sitting room for sitting and another for noisy children's play! The dining kitchen was huge and well equipped and overlooked the garden with doors that could have been opened out if we'd not been there in February! The bedrooms were comfortable (though some of us would have liked more pillows). It was beautifully situated, with lots to do not far away. It was so quiet and peaceful, and there were lots of birds (my guide to a good place!).

We had a brilliant time as family and friends got together to celebrate my husbands 60th birthday.. there was plenty of room for the grandchildren to play. very well maintained and had every facility we could wish for. Would highly recommend this property to others and consider using it again hopefully in the near future. Thank you to all involved.

An ideal location for a seasonal family get together.. Well equipped in every way , including a dog towel. Each and everyone enjoyed the stay and suggested Top house is ideal for winter or summer gatherings.

The house was amazing-we had so much room,if we all wanted to do seperate things while at the house.. The kitchen was the biggest we had seen, and very well stocked out.We would definatly go to this one again. Was easy to find, and well kitted out.Plenty of garden for the two dogs.

Although the place looked amazing in the pictures, our expectations were exceeded when we arrived.. The cottage is beautiful and we would highly recommend a stay here.

Because the weather wasn’t too good we spent all of our birthday celebration weekend at Top House.. We enjoyed good conversation, laughter and real valuable family time together. There was plenty of space and loads of games and books available and the garden had lots of interest.

We had a lovely time at Top House! The house is very spacious and the garden is spectacular! The kitchen has everything you could wish for. A lot of lovely attractions and walks are a short drive away and the welsh border is a stone’s throw. I would highly recommend Top House.

The cottage had more than enough space for the 9 of us and 2 dogs.. It was lovely and comfortable with everything you needed to be a home from home.

Top House is a perfect place for a large gathering.. The large kitchen accommodates everyone with ease (there were 9 of us) and opens directly onto the garden. There is plenty of room in the house for everyone to find their own space without being shut away from others. The garden is a good size and is secure, making it ideal for dogs and for playing games. The fire pit was lovely to sit round in the evening. Top House is welcoming and very well-equipped. We had a lovely time here and there is lots to see and do in the area.

Top House is a comfortable, spacious house with a patio area and a very large garden.. We felt 'at home' immediately. The variety of bedroom layouts cater for all tastes and family sizes. The huge kitchen has every appliance and utensil needed, making mealtimes trouble-free. The BBQ was in full use during our stay. The wall of full height folding windows was a godsend in the hot weather! Ideal for families with children of all ages. Two sitting rooms with TVs and DVDs and lots of games for the young at heart. A core group of our large family completed two 1000 piece jigsaws in odd moments of our holiday. We had five cars and had no trouble parking them all off road. Days out included a visit to Llangollen with its canal and stream railway and a trip to Rhaeadr Falls. We recommend eating at The Horse and Jockey at the end of the lane and The Dog and Bull in Coton.

Ideal for a large family get together we all had a lovely time and enjoyed our stay.. Garden is lovely and very big but some sun longers would be nice and definitely a sun umbrella. We constructed one from the washing line and blankets. We were very noisy outside on the first night and had a complaint from the neighbour. Sincere apologies, we didn't realise we had a neighbour.

May 2018
Stayed at Top House with my extended family of 8 adults and 2 children over Whit week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.. The kitchen leading out onto the garden was beautiful and the full width sliding patio doors spent most of the time fully open, which allowed us to access the extensive garden with ease. This was helped by the excellent weather we enjoyed for the full week, bar a couple of thunder storms (which were great to watch with the doors open). The only thing that could possibly improve this space would be some comfy chairs or a sofa, but that is just knit picking with a great room. The bedrooms were comfortable and clean and allowed the different members of our party to retreat to quiet area when needed. One bed did have a squeak but this was quickly remedied with a spanner. The bathrooms were also clean and practical, with fantastic showers that were nice and hot and very powerful (which is a bug bear of mine on holidays when you get a rubbish shower). The living room was hardly used due to the wonderful kitchen but when used was comfortable and spacious. The exterior was well maintained and the garden was another area which we used often. There was ample parking for our four cars and could probably accommodate another couple of vehicles. The entrance to the drive was a little tricky to get out of due to poor visibility and some other inconsiderate drivers who seemed to drive the narrow back lane at inappropriate speeds, but was fine if taken with care. Overall I would recommend this property to anyone wanting to get away with a large group, it's spacious, comfortable and set in peaceful grounds.

May 2018
What a lovely house, plenty of room so no one is getting under each others feet and the property is well equipped, lovely large gardens.. Setting is idyllic, out in the countryside overlooking fields and not overlooked by anybody, quiet and peaceful ideal for just sitting on the patio and chilling out in the evening sun after a hard days sightseeing. One point to note that you do need transport to stay here as to the location of the property and the nearest shops being approx 3.5 miles away in Wem.
Mrs Adamson
April 2018
As a large party, we couldn't have asked for better.. The kitchen was extremely well equipped with appliances you would not expect to find in a holiday home. All bathrooms and showering facilities were good with good water pressure for the amount of potentially showering at the same time (a good shower is important!). The property was well maintained with both window cleaners and grass cutting taking place during our stay with no intrusion to our stay. We have all agreed we would love to return as it was the perfect spot for us to continue exploring Shropshire, a beautiful county with so much we didn't see.

We had a lovely stay in a spacious house which was well equipped.. Very child and dog friendly. It suited our needs for three families to get together to celebrate a special birthday. Good location for dog walks and nice Pubs for Sunday Lunch.

December 2017
We spent a wonderful weekend in December celebrating our Mum's 70th birthday.. There were 11 of us (7 adults & 4 kids) and the house had plenty of space (& bathrooms) for us all without feeling we were cramped and on top of each other. Plenty of snow fell over the weekend and kids had a great time in the fab garden making snowmen and having snowball fights. The big kitchen table was perfect for all of us to sit together for meals, and the log fire made the living room very cosy in the evenings. Would be very happy to stay at Top House again - maybe in spring or summer next time.
Mr Derrick
August 2017
Excellent property, lots of space and for the kids to run around, quiet and peaceful (except for the kids).. The only problem was the broadband kept dropping out probably due to distance from the exchange.
Mr Beasley

Stayed over New Year as three families of 4. Sleeping accommodation and bathrooms were clean and spacious. Good, large kitchen would benefit from a second cooker and/or range, although this was not a major issue. Living areas were fairly small for the size of the house, but only mattered when all congregated together. Kids spent most of their time in other areas of the house. Beautiful and extensive garden, not fully secured for children or dogs. Would love to see this in the summer months. Fairly isolated position and Satnav postcode is a mile from actual location, car definitely needed. Easy key collection, no contact with the landlord during stay. Chocolates left as welcome gift. One fridge broken and a dodge chair were main maintenance issues. Overall a fabulous stay in a lovely location.

May 2016
The property was very secluded which we loved. The House had plenty of space for 6 adults, 4 children and our little Yorkie. Absolutely loved the kitchen and the sunsets through the kitchen windows were just breathtaking. Thank you for a fantastic holiday.

April 2016
I am utterly perplexed at some of the poor reviews!! The house is an outstanding place to stay and brilliantly situated for what has been a memorable and enjoyable holiday! The Top House is totally equipped for every need and the owner clearly cares for her customers. Beautifully clean and spacious rooms a delightful kitchen which is a great space for the family. Lovely warm and cosy lounge with a great log burner with wood provided by the owner. The outdoor space is superb and the children and our dog had great fun in the garden. A washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher provided and beds are so comfy! We would love to come back and we will recommend to anybody.
Mrs Simmonds
March 2016
We loved the house. It was ideal for us as a family group of 8 adults and 5 children, especially the huge garden and the playroom which kept the children good. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and very well equipped, and we would not hesitate to go back again. It would be lovely to go back in summer.

Room layout both upstairs and downstairs was great for our group. Garden was great for the dog and the children. Muffins on arrival was a nice touch!

February 2016
We celebrated a 60th birthday for 'Nana' and enjoyed a lovely week at Top House. It was a superb property which had a beautiful dining kitchen with bi fold doors to huge lawned area, was very well equipped and had two large sitting rooms. It was peaceful and quiet but within reasonable driving distance of many superb areas worth a visit to cater for all tastes. It was nice that we could bring our Jack Russell Bella, she loved it too! Will be back.

August 2015
The property was generously fitted and the two sitting rooms worked well so that the grandchildren could play in one room whilst the older members of the party could use the other room. The property and fittings were clean and well prepared for our arrival, the garden and facilities were perfect, safe, and beautifully maintained. We would not hesitate to recommend this property for a large family gathering.

July 2015
So disappointing! The property has the potential to be outstanding, size of property, a great setting, superb gardens & proximity to great places to visit. Unfortunately other than the kitchen/dining area, we found many issues with the property: - stains on the lounge carpet - overall cleanliness of property very poor - washing up bowl a health hazard - bedding in the bedroom to the right of the stairs had not been changed - at least 30% of the crockery chipped - although a washing machine is available, advised only to use in emergencies Our disappointment & frustration is that these things are not difficult to fix, but are simply being overlooked!
Mr Howard

Thoroughly enjoyable stay, plenty of areas for each family to have their own space.

The house was equipped with lots of toys and books that the children really enjoyed. The gardens were amazing. There were plenty of places to visit around the area suitable for adults and children so we always had something to do.

It was brilliant for a gathering of friends and family for my 60th birthday celebrations. We cant wait to come again next year!

April 2015
It was a great place to stay for a large family holiday. The garden was safe for the children to play in and there were toys already there for them to play with. The kitchen was very large, looking out on to the garden which meant we spent most of our time in the kitchen. The house is very central to many attractions.

August 2014
The house was ideal for a large family party with a fantastic garden suitable for children and outdoor games. The surrounding area offered something of interest to all ages; Shrewsbury, a lovely city to visit, is within easy reach, as is Ludlow and Llangollen. A high point for children and the energetic was a visit to Hawkstone Park. A good selection of eating places close by.

June 2014
Fabulous wrap around garden, immaculately kept, which the children enjoyed immensely. There were bags of room in the house and the second lounge was ideal to contain children and toys! More than enough crockery and cutlery for the 10 of us.

June 2014
We had a great week at top house and were extremely lucky with the weather. There were 6 adults (3 couples), a 4 year old, an infant and a dog. There was plenty of space with 2 of the rooms unused. The house had 2 high chairs and a decent cot for the baby and the master bedroom had a connected children's bedroom for our son. The house has the most amazing garden that is fairly contained which was great for our dog and son. The garden is really well maintained which is unusual for a rental and we spent lots of time sat outside using the BBQ. The kitchen is a really decent size and the doors open up so you can really enjoy the weather and garden. There are two lounges so we utilised one as a play room and it does have lots of children's toys, games & dvd's. The only downside is there is not much within walking distance. We were really unimpressed when we popped for a drink in the horse & jockey. Unfriendly, unwelcoming, poor choice. We stayed for one drink and left and wouldn't consider eating there. There are far better options in Wem (the castle) or welshampton (the sun inn). We really enjoyed our week and would definitely recommend it.
Mrs Gray
May 2014
The house was spacious, brilliantly equipped furnished. All our requirements were catered for. The ground floor bedroom and toilet were invaluable for my elderly mother. Having TVs in more than one room was a godsend in the evenings.

May 2014
Great for a family get together. Facilities were good and the only criticism is the oven was too small for a large gathering, it needs to be larger and have more rings on the hob - a range would be better for that size accommodation. Besides that it was a lovely house which created the perfect atmosphere for a special family occasion.

April 2014
The house was ideal for families, there were plenty of children's toys and games, a large garden and two Shetland ponies at the bottom of the garden.

April 2014
The house was fine generally, with good quality bed-linen, well-stocked with glasses, coffee machines and fridges! It was a good place for our extended family get-together. The children loved the garden, especially the friendly pony over the fence. It felt safe and was very peaceful.

January 2014
Lovely touch being greeted with cakes. The house was beautiful, a real homely feel to it. Fantastic facilities and great value for money. The photos were a real reflection of the house which can be rare. Overall it was a great weekend with some lovely walks nearby, a real escape to the country. The house is well capable of holding big groups of people.

January 2014
After a dark, rainy traffic filled Friday night drive we were greeted by a beautiful warm, friendly house with tasty coffee cakes on the table as we arrived. The first thing that struck me was the house was like the photos, countless times I have been to places that look like the Buckingham Palace online and you arrive to something more comparable to what you see on grime busters. The house was incredibly well equip with plenty of pots, pans, wine glasses, serving dishes, gravy jugs and even right down to egg cups. The house had such a homely feel with plenty of books, games, dvd's and with a trip down memory lane with the cd collection. I went through Sykes Cottages who provided a well organised seamless service. They have people available to answer any questions till late in the evening and at weekends which was great with organising the trip around work. The lady in the local pub 'The Horse and Jockey' was very friendly and helped with directions getting to the cottage as I could not get hold of the owner. When we visited on the Saturday night for food, it was okay pub grub, very quiet with only a couple of locals and with below average service which was disappointing after such fantastic experience whilst contacting them over the phone. Nonetheless it was great to have somewhere within walking distance. Slight glitches with the house were the windows and doors were terribly fitted and it was a real struggle opening and closing them. I found the owner a little abrupt when I called for extra details and to arrange key collection. The ten o'clock departure was very early, especially as they arrived to prepare the cottage dead on 10am. Overall it was a great weekend with some lovely walks nearby, a real escape to the country. The house is well capable of holding big groups of people without being either overly big or cramp. I couldn't have hoped for a more perfect place. I definitely recommend and should the occasion occur I will be returning.

Everything was perfect and so welcoming. There was even a TV times, chocolates on the tree, a box of chocolates on the kitchen table and fairy lights in the kitchen. We did a lot of cooking over Christmas and we were not short of any equipment, pots or pans. The house was warm and cosy and the walks near the house were wonderful.

July 2012
The house had a fabulous kitchen, a wonderful garden and comfortable beds. Plenty of pots and pans, loads of space, and the local pub served reasonably priced food. Easily the best house we have ever rented and we have been renting cottages and houses for several years now.
Mrs Bailey
May 2012
Top House was overall an excellent holiday property. We especially liked the huge kitchen diner with the doors which we could fold right back to open on to the patio and lovely garden. As we were lucky with the weather, we made very good use of this feature.

November 2011
The location allowed us to the visit other areas with ease. The layout of the property meant that the whole family were able to do their own thing. Plenty of toys for the younger children and the older boys had lots of reading material.
Ms Byrne
September 2011
The cottage was wonderful, especially the kitchen and garden. As a keen cook, I am used to taking lots of kitchen equipment with me, but at Top House I need not have bothered. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked. It was also an ideal place for everybody to sit and chat while cooking. The garden was very good too and the children had a great time playing on the slide. The house was perfectly laid out, and the toys were particularly appreciated by our 3 1/2 year and and 18 month old. They hardly looked at their own toys all week. It was a fabulous holiday and we are already looking at when we could return to Top House.

June 2011
Good sized house that easily sleeps 12-13 people comfortably situated about 30 minutes drive away from centre of Shrewsbury. Big tesco about the same distance away and smaller tescos nearby. Place is well equiped and clean on arrival. Good sized lounge with large tv and dvd player. Big kitchen space with everything you would need present. Nice big garden and patio area if the weather is nice. Rooms are nice and comfortable with 4 double beds spread around the house. The only thing is that phone reception is quite low in the area so if you just want to get away, great. However, if you still need to communicate frequently then you need to go outside to get some signal or walk around the house. No Wifi in house which would be useful for people trying to plan things on laptops etc.

The garden was very spacious and great for the children. We couldn't fault the property. It had everything for our requirements.
Mr Kettel
May 2011
For a family trip, with a mixture of kids and adults, this is great. There's plenty of room in the garden and the kids can have their own lounge. You can sleep 13 and that would be fine for a load of adults, but I think with kids you are better off taking advantage of the available space. We didn't do any outings as the idea was to relax. There was no problem doing that. All in all a great place to stay and I'd have no hesitation in going back.
Mrs Pocklington

Great outdoor space, even for 6 children with bikes! Lovely area. Don't miss Ironbridge - lots to do and family ticket covers everything.
