Area
The ancient market town of Richmond is situated at the entrance to Swaledale, a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. With a maze of cobbled streets and narrow alleys – or 'wynds' – this town has over nine centuries of history. Growing up around the castle - a Norman fortress dating back to 1071 – Richmond literally means 'strong hill' and is derived from the Old English 'Riche-mont'. The River Swale runs through the town itself and provides not only lovely walks, but also safe paddling areas and the occasional small waterfall. Radiating from the market place, where a weekly market and monthly farmer's market are still observed, the lovely cobbled streets are lined with numerous shops, pubs and restaurants.

Region
From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

Amenities
Gas central heating. Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge, automatic washer, Smart TV which still includes Freeview, CD/radio/cassette player, WiFi, selection of books and games. All fuel and power inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Cot and highchair. Sun trap garden area with patio and garden furniture owners do have access, but ensure you are left in private. Fireplace is for display purposes only. Off road parking. Sorry, no pets and no smoking. Richmond town centre is 1 mile (bus stop adjacent to cottage), shop 5 mins walk, pubs 1 mile.

A lovely welcome from the Owners on arrival.. Bungalow was relaxing and just right for a week of walking in the Dales, close to Richmond and walks straight from the door.

We had a wonderful time at the cottage the garden was wonderful to sit in at daytime and evening.. The cottage gave a home from home feel . The directions from Ron & Pat the owners were very easy to follow. If like my husband Iain and I and like flyfishing it is perfect as there are plenty of place’s nearby. We will be going back.

This property is in a great location.. Near enough to all that Richmond has to offer but far enough away from the hustle and bustle. Lovely secluded garden, a real suntrap. Very friendly owners, leaving a tray of tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits as well as a bottle of wine and bottle of fresh milk in the fridge, they even popped in on our last day to wish us a safe journey home. Hopefully we will be back for our 4th visit very soon.

We had a lovely stay here.. When we arrived here was a welcome tray of tea, coffee and biscuits and a pint of fresh milk in the fridge. What a lovely touch. The cottage was perfect for us and very homely. Lovely and warm and had everything we needed. THere was also DVDs to watch and a games cupboard. Fantastic views from the back garden and fields across the road as located right on the edge of the town. Perfect base for visiting Richmond and surrounding area. There is a little public pathway that goes right down the side of the bungalow which takes you on a picturesque walk to Easby Abbey. Well worthy a visit.

Lovely little cottage and the owners have thought of just about everything, including a welcome pack consisting of wine, biscuits, tea, coffee, sugar and milk.. My only recommendation would be for the addition of black out curtains/blinds at the bedroom windows as there is a streetlight opposite which can make the room a little light but that is only my personal opinion and apart from that it was perfect and we can't wait to go back again and again.

The location suited us as it was close to Richmond but away from the built up area.. Views from Thornlea were of countryside and rabbits played in the back garden .Access to the Dales was easy so we made full use of the opportunity to enjoy visiting several.

Very warm welcome - very comfortable - very spacious for 2 people - location was ideal for us.. Very minor problem was wifi only available <20% of the time - if you are a news junkie like us, it's a problem. But VERY minor in the overall scheme of things.

This bungalow is situated just as you enter Richmond from Scotch Corner at the end of a row of semi-detached houses.. Ideally situated as you can walk into town or get a local bus which stops nearby. Also well situated for lovely trips to lots of different areas. Parking is easy and on the premises. As it is on the main road you can hear traffic but, with the windows closed and with the excellent double glazing it wasn't a problem. The views from the garden at the back are lovely and it was nice to watch the birds and squirrels from the patio doors. It would be pleasant sitting out there during the better weather. We were very warm and comfortable and the bungalow is well equipped including a hairdryer and lots of storage. The kitchen is small and I wouldn't care to make a meal for four people in it but Richmond and the Dales have such nice eating places cooking wasn't on the agenda! The owners are friendly and helpful if you need them. Wi-Fi is unreliable as the owners told us. The only safe way to get into and out of the bath for older people is to hang onto the shower fitting. I would like to see a non-slip mat in the bath and a grab rail. We would be happy to go back to Thornlea.

As we had previously stayed at Thornlea before, we knew exactly what to expect of the cottage, and we were over the moon to be able to book it at quite short notice when most of the year is fully booked. The owners live next door but never make you feel as if Big Brother is watching you. A very enjoyable and stress-free break; we will definitely return!
Mr Maguire

Great bungalow in a fantastic location. Owners very helpful and welcoming. Highly recommended.

September 2012
One of the easiest holiday cottages I have booked. From first booking with yourselves, the experience was a pleasure. The owners were very friendly, living next door, nothing too much trouble for them, they were there if you needed them but not intrusive at all. A welcome pack was in the cottage to start the holiday which included a bottle of wine. It was a very enjoyable holiday, and a cottage I would use again.

From the welcoming bottle of wine one the table when we arrived, we knew that we were going to enjoy this break, and were not disappointed! It was a beautiful bungalow, with lovely views out over rolling fields and hills, so tranquil. We have visited Richmond many times before, but never stopped in a holiday home there and were 'over the moon' with the cottage for location and a comprehensive list of fixtures/fitttings. The owners were ever so friendly(next door) but without that 'big brother is watching you' attitude! Truly a lovely holiday home which we will return to, if we may, Thank you on behalf of my wife and I.
Mrs Cushlow

The location, and the warmth and 'cosiness' of the cottage was top class. The owners living next door were there if we needed any thing and the welcome tray when we arrived after a long journey was very welcome. We look forward to returning to this property when we visit this area again.

The friendly personal service from the owners who lived adjacent to the bungalow (a welcome note, bottle of Cava for our wedding celebrations, milk in the fridge, tea, coffee, sugar, filter papers, washing up liquid, paper towels, washing powder, bin bags and a personal visit to make sure we arrived ok). We felt the bungalow offered general warmth comfort on arrival.

A warm friendly welcome from the owners together with flowers on the table, milk in the fridge and a bottle of wine and black sheep beer on the table! (as well as the more usual tea, coffee and sugar). Fantastic view from the sitting room across the vale, and a suntrap to sit in when one wished, in a colourful garden. Unobtrusive help available when required.
