There is no electric razor point and NO grab rails on the bath.. An installed shower would be an improvement. There is only a rubber hose to fix on the taps.

It was a lovely comfortable cottage in a brilliant location with fabulous facilities.. The only thing lacking was a seat positioned to take in the view at the front which was stunning.

The cottage was listed as dog friendly.. The staircase was wooden and varnished and was treacherous for our dogs. The couch and chair in the living room were old, tatty and filthy. The whole cottage was thick with cobwebs and so had not seen a duster or brush in years. There was no shower, just a bath. Generally uncomfortable, unclean and basic. This is not Sykes fault, it is the fault of the owner. The only sign of recognition of Covid 19 i saw was a bottle of sanitizer on the kitchen window cill. There were frogs in the living room! Seriously though, it was the most non dog friendly place I've been in. We had to assist our dogs downstairs every morning. Very disappointing. Spent the bare minimum time there that we had to

Lovely weekend at Thirley Cotes cottage.. We took 3 very well behaved labradors with us. The 5 acre wood across the road was perfect for them to stretch their legs and they were welcome at both the pubs we chose to have dinner in. The cottage is exactly as it appears- idyllic. My partner loved the vast supply of wood for the open fire. I'm sure we will be back.

This is the third time we have been.. It's great for the dogs & the area is lovely. The owner is very nice but the cottage is in need of a shower as the bath is quite slipey with nothing to hold on to

We thought the fixtures and fitting were dated and the cleanliness wasn’t great, found mice dropping in a board game and the windows could of done with a clean..

A really enjoyable break at a cosy, well furnished cottage in such a peaceful, tucked away corner on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors.. The cottage is ideal for walkers, sight seers or just anyone who wants to recharge their batteries. The cottage itself is well furnished, with a good bed, central heating and even an open fire. The kitchen has a decent range of equipment including a washer drier. However the star is the moors and dales in your doorstep with the bright lights of Scarborough and the Yorkshire coast a short drive away.

We (self, partner & 3 border collies) spent a wonderfully peaceful and relaxing week at Thiirley Cotes, The Cottage is tucked away, which means that you can fully enjoy the peace and quiet.. Though it is only 10/15 minutes away by car to the coast, through stunning scenery. We took our dogs to the east side of Sandsend beach, beautiful and dog friendly. There are walks and trails all over the area, you are spoilt for choice. The cottage is ideal for dog owners/walkers and is geared that way. I have seen a couple of reviews say about cleanliness, I think they are mistaking cleanliness with suitable for dogs. The cottage was clean and tidy and thoroughly welcoming for both us and our pooches. The floors are painted floorboards with a large dog friendly rug in the living room. You don’t want wall to wall carpeting and lots of fuss when you are bringing three wet dogs in after a long walk. Mr Empson is incredibly laid back, understanding and very kind about having dogs around, there were three dogs in the cottage next door too. Just two steps across a tiny lane at the back of the cottage is the wonderful Evie’s Wood - 5 acres filled with native species of trees, brambles, sunflowers and allsorts of wildlife. It is a real haven and was an incredible exercise area for our dogs - they loved it! We asked if it was ok for my daughter and her partner to visit us on Bank Holiday Monday and bring her two dogs, not a problem at all. Wonderful, we had a great day and my daughter and her partner are going to book for next year. I’m torn between highly recommending and keeping this wonderful little cottage a secret! Thank you Mr Empson, for your hospitality and wonderful understanding of multiple dog families

Ideal position to go to the coast , Yorkshire Moors and the North York Moors Railway .. Nice area in the woods to walk the dog opposite the cottage . We found plenty of cafes and pubs to take the dog in around the area. We enjoyed the North Yorkshire Moors railway trip from Pickering to Whitby . Do have some Fish & Chips in Whitby , the fish is so fresh it's wonderful!

We booked this cottage because phone connection was probably going to be poor and we needed a rest from company calls during our holiday.. ....Our plan worked a treat and we had a well earned rest. We have returned home very chilled....The Internet had connection so we were able to be connected at our convenience though... The cottage was clean, tidy and neat and we felt comfortable there with our three dogs... Many thanks for a lovely time...Jill

A very well maintained cottage which and has all the home comforts you need.. The bed and bedding are very comfortable. The Cottage is central for everywhere we visited. It has a brilliant five acre area you can enjoy opposite the cottage and a really pleasant garden to use with various garden furniture. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. This is the third year we have stayed at Thirley Cotes Cottage and will be booking for next year. Patrick and Jacqui

This lovely little cottage is situated in a peaceful setting handy for the moors & the coast. Although the kitchen, bathroom & bedding were clean the cottage as a whole needs a complete makeover. The furniture is not as shown on the website & there is no comfortable seating in the living room, the sofa being so low as to be unusable. There was also an unpleasant smell particularly in the living room which still hung around even after using air fresheners. Even our dog seemed unsettled. Patchy wi-fi & no phone signal. Sorry but wouldn't recommend unless refurbished.
Mrs Simpson, October 2016
September 2016
This holiday cottage is absolutely brilliant.. Very clean, you couldn't want any more appliances in the kitchen than what's there. Lovely 4 piece bathroom suite adjacent to the bedroom. An ideal place to stay in peace and quiet and makes a perfect location for visiting so many places of interest, very central. This is the second year we have stayed here and will be booking for next year. I can't imagine staying anywhere else. Jacqueline and Patrick.

The peaceful surroundings and the quirkiness of the cottage. Loved the exposed brickwork and beams. The bed was extremely comfortable. The garden was a sunny haven and although the cottage is quite remote, it was easy to get to Scarborough and other places. It was a most enjoyable stay.

The location of the cottage is wonderful, peaceful and ideal for dogs, especially with the option to use woodland opposite. However, the cottage itself is very tired, grubby looking and run down. It could be made wonderful, but needs a complete makeover for it to be worth the asking price we paid to stay there. We paid for 7 nights but only stayed 4 as it was not a comfortable place in which to relax and enjoy our holiday.

The position of the cottage was brilliant, very handy for quite a range of places to visit. The actual cottage was spotlessly clean and the kitchen appliances were more than adequate, in fact, a home from home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be staying again sometime.

A peaceful and tranquil cottage, sitting as it does in such remarkable surroundings. The opportunity for dog walking was great in the young established woodland, or along the lane taking in the expansive views and observing wildlife such as barn owl, hare, roe deer and a plethora of garden and farmland birds. The bedroom and bathroom were particularly comfortable and relaxing. A great opportunity to spend quality time with our dogs too.

Did not need to travel far, to find lots of brilliant walks for the dogs. Very central to the coast and forestry walks. Really relaxing and quiet, we could walk miles and not see any people. Lots of places where dogs could be off lead. Particularly liked the way the beaches were sectioned off as dog friendly and dog free. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be going back to that area as loads of places/walks we did not get a chance to do, all three dogs were exhausted by the end of the week.

Rita and I, having recently moved house, needed a quiet relaxing holiday and we certainly found one in Thirley Cotes. It's off the beaten track yet charming and close to amenities and Scarborough - Whitby's not far either. Inside it's very good with an excellent kitchen and bedroom, the lounge is comfortable but a bit basic. The bathroom is also very good but needs a shower spray for ladies who wash their hair (which is all of them all the time!). I recommend it.

This was a lovely, peaceful location to stay in. The cottage had everything we could wish for and the little touches, such as providing maps and leaflets concerning the local area proved very useful, despite the fact that we are already frequent visitors to this area of the country. The private woodland/meadow also proved very useful for allowing our dog to stretch his legs.

This is a wonderful cosy cottage in beautiful countryside. Although in a quiet hamlet you are not far from Whitby and Scarborough so it's a perfect base. It is dog friendly and even has a private woodland for you to exercise them in. The spotlessly clean cottage met every imaginable need, even providing board games, books etc and some very helpful leaflets about the surrounding area. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

We loved this cottage, everything was comfortable and good quality with lots of attention to detail, and the open fire topped it all off beautifully. The surroundings are just really breathtaking and a great escape from the big smoke. Hope to come again! Bobbin the pup loved it too.
