Very nice place to stay for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.. Great to be so close to the looe railway line, which is ideal if you would like to get about without using your car. Cosy and comfortable accommodation . Very friendly and helpful owner nearby if needed. We would recommend this lovely cottage.

May 2019
Although giving the impression of being in an isolated location (due to its quiet, peaceful atmosphere) The Retreat was ideally located both for local trips to Looe and Polperro and for travelling further afield.. Would definitely stay there again if it is available when next visiting the area.

September 2018
Had a lovely week in the cottage.. Really handy for the branch line between Liskard and Looe so we didn't always need to use the car. Although the cottage is dog friendly we couldn't tell! No lingering doggie smells (our dogs are bad travellers so we leave them in kennels). All in all a great week in a cosy, clean, well equipped cottage, what more do you need!

The cottage’s location was brilliant next to the railway station.. We really enjoyed taking the train and not having to drive.

A very enjoyable stay in a well-equipped cottage in a beautiful location..

This is a great little hide-away, with jolly and helpful owners - if you need them.. You can abandon your car and 'let the train take the strain' as they say. Clean, tidy and well appointed. The four steps that have to be negotiated to the door could be awkward for some a little less able.

May 2018
A quaint magic place, part of an old mill complex.. The abiding memories will last. Wild garlic scented walks in the evening, the East Looe river (with brown trout) gurgling at the edge of the property. A vineyard within an energetic stroll, (a good white wine). Your own very nearly private station halt to take you into Looe and back for an evening meal and drinks, or a days excursion with the dog along the Cornwall Coastal Path. Taking the train was cheaper and much less stress when going into Looe. From May onwards parking in any seaside town in Devon/Cornwall can be a problem. Paul (Pip) Corin the owner, organ restorer and exmiller, full of history and local knowledge.

April 2018
We were looking for a chance to recharge our batteries after a trying few months, and we found that The Retreat succeeded in doing that.. The little cottage was extremely well and thoughtfully equipped and the hosts were on hand if we needed any advice, or just to wave a friendly greeting. It was all so well thought out. We could relax and enjoy the peace, only broken by birdsong. We were lucky with the weather and were able to sit out on the little patio area before or after a trip out. The fact that we were located beside the picturesque Looe Valley railway line was an added bonus. You truly could not hear the trains at other times but it was a delight to be able to travel to Looe for the day and then just step off the train and be home. We had our dog with us and she had her own little fenced area of the garden, as well as being able to walk the little country lanes surrounding the cottage with very rarely a car passing by. We loved our break at the Retreat.

The Cottage is just as you show it.. Very quiet location. Just one point is that Mr.Corin no longer has the Magnificent Music Machines to show but he will give you a recital on the mighty Wurlitzer that he has left !
Mrs Sherwood
June 2017
Fantastic location in Cornwall.. Peaceful and tranquil with easy access for exploring. Bonus being so near to railway halt stop with access to Looe, Liskeard and beyond. Lovely not to need to use the car for a few days. Cottage very cosy - most comfortable bed out of any previous cottages visited which ensured having a restful holiday.

May 2017
Although we had planned to take our two dogs with us, a few days before we decided to book them into the kennels, thank goodness we did. We arrived late Saturday afternoon and Mr Corin showed us around, there was a definite smell of damp and grease, a lump of which he pointed out to us on the front of the cooker complete with dog hairs, two apparently broken knobs were missing but he did give us new replacements on Monday. The towels and bed linen were the oldest I've ever seen and smelt which I at first put down to possibly cheap washing powder. My husband who was asthmatic decades ago developed a tight chest the first evening which we put down to damp. The rusted towel rail did not ever come on and when my husband told Mr Corin he insisted it was on 10 hours daily. I sat up most of the Monday night as I couldn't stand the smell of the pillows any longer. Reading the Guest Book I discovered that holidaymakers at the end of April 2017 had taken two cats - who knew people took cats on their holidays! My husband is allergic to cats. So Tuesday we both admitted we couldn't stay there another night and found alternative accommodation in a guest house (thank goodness we didn't have the dogs with us or we'd have had to go home.) I'm still washing clothes and jackets as everything we took into that cottage stinks and we'll be throwing our bags away. Although I emailed Sykes Cottages the next day they still haven't acknowledged or replied to me.
March 2017
Actual dog friendly place. small enclosed garden. tiled floors in lounge, owner very relaxed and actually owns dogs. Location is good for south and north coast. close to trainline.

This was the best property my husband and I have ever stayed in and we look forward to going again. Well done to the owners for a beautiful retreat.
Mrs McBrien
February 2016
The owner of The Retreat was very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. It was clear a lot of thought and care had gone into furnishing and equipping the cottage which was attractive, cosy, comfortable and very easy to keep clean. The garden area was nicely private and well-laid out with separate sitting and clothes-drying areas. We found the setting pretty and very peaceful, with walks from the door to nearby villages (we loved St Keyne's Well). Liskeard was just up the road to cover all our food-shopping needs and the cottage was also in a good location for touring around Cornwall, especially with the railway halt nearby. We enjoyed our stay at The Retreat very much.
August 2015
the photographs look idyllic and the description matched the photographs BUT...... these must have been taken several years ago because they are totally unrepresentative of reality. For a start, the gardens, once carefully planted are now overgrown with weeds and brambles.....although the owner does mow the approx. 4' wide strip of grass. The steps are dark and quite dingy - there are no pretty flower baskets on the wall. While the front of the outside has clearly been given a lick of paint (its white not yellow as portrayed) the side and rear are the original yellow....now flaking. the patio furniture illustrated on the photo has been replaced with rusty metal table and a couple of chairs - although there are a couple of metal tubs with evergreens. no flowers. Because the whole building is in the shadow of the old disused mill (doesn't look as in good nick as it does on the photos) the patio and inside are very dark. if you look at the photos on the website you will see all the lights are on. When we arrived the owner asked us to move our car away from the mill because there was a danger of falling tiles....so don't walk too near! Once inside - everywhere is dark and on face value looks clean....a decent (if not 4 tick) place as a base. The fridge and cooker and inside cupboards are immaculately clean and there is more than enough utensils, crockery, cutlery etc. The towels are soft and fluffy but the bed linen which was laundered, is very old and has seen better days - probably better days in the 80's. It was when I closed the bedroom door that I noticed the cobwebs....and dirt on skirting boards. So I looked further, in all corners there were cobwebs, even inside the shelving unit. not just strands of fine gossamer one might expect in a rural setting....thick felt like cobwebs often still inhabited with huge 'huntsman' spiders. The bathroom was also a blast from the past as was the mildew around the tiles, the basin is cracked. As for water....a facility that one expects.....the pressure is so low you have to be patient and wait but the hot water is very limited. So much so, it ran out and I had to get my husband to boil a kettle and make up jugs of water to rinse my hair. Other surprises....a half chewed dog toy under a piece of furniture ( I pushed it back so well done if you find it!) A dirty old sock under the bed (we discarded that....sorry if it was yours) There are some pleasant experiences....families of rabbits roam freely and are very cute to watch, and the station just a short walk away is a godsend. The owner is really friendly....but don't expect to be left alone for a romantic escape. He did ask on a daily basis (sometimes more often) if everything was alright and there are signs up asking to notify problems....but I couldn't bring myself to say, you need to redecorate and clean this property properly....so I added to the visitors book and was amazed that no one eels had ever made similar comments. Our holiday was wonderful....you cant fail to enjoy beautiful Cornwall but the cottage is nothing as described...it may have been some years ago. I wouldn't have booked it if it had shown accurate photographs, I was looking for a 4 or 5 tick property and this does not make the grade at all.
Mrs Sandell

The kitchen was well equipped- important as we like to cook a relaxed evening meal. Outside the garden was a delight- lots of birds and friendly rabbits. Having it's own station halt on the rail wayline to Looe very convienient.15

The Retreat lived up to its name. It is situated in a quiet backwater of Cornwall yet within easy access of tourist attractions. The owners could not have been more obliging and they made a real fuss of our dog. The cottage was excellent in every way and we shall definitely return.

The owner went out of her way to make us feel welcome. She had left us a bottle of wine, milk, tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits and even biscuits for the dogs which we particularly appreciated. We had a lovely holiday and would highly recommend this property to both friends and family

We particularly liked the feel of the cottage, and the isolation. The owners were very helpful and friendly, they had equipped the cottage with milk, tea and coffee, also a very welcome bottle of wine. All in all, superb accommodation.

The owners were warm and friendly and we were made to feel most welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for them. A nice touch was wine and milk in the fridge for our arrival (plus a large Bonio for our dog). The cottage was well appointed and had everything that we needed, all in very good condition. Whilst the cottage is in a very quiet location, both Looe and Liskeard are easy to get to (less than 1/2 an hour by car). We would happily recommend this cottage to family and friends.

Cornwall has lots of unspoilt beaches, great attractions...Local people were very friendly and there is a great spirit of community and helpfulness. The cottage was great and the complimentary wine, tea, coffee toilet rolls, soaps, dishwasher tablets were all nice touches that made life so much easier.

The tranquil position of the cottage was great. It was central for most of the areas that we wanted to visit while we were there. The owners were very friendly and made us feel welcome by chatting to us most days and the bottle of wine they left for us. The property had all mod cons.

As we had traveled from Canada we needed a well-equipped cottage and the Retreat did not let us down. If we have an opportunity we will certainly return to the Retreat - certainly several of our friends have placed it on their list! The location was ideal for exploring Cornwall.
