The Forestry Commission woodland at Dalby is worth a visit and has several excellent nature trails to be enjoyed whilst slightly further away is the historic cathedral city of York with its huge range of shops, cinemas and museums.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

The Old Coach House is set in a quiet lane a 10 minute walk from the centre of picturesque Thornton - le - Dale.. The coach house has been renovated to a high standard, is clean and comfortably furnished. The only negative was that the ensuite bath room attached to the room with the double bed is in need of redecorating as the pain is peeling from the walls. The shower screen requires repair/fixing which the vendor informed us about on arrival. Also the lightening in this room is very poor and my elderly parents struggled to know whether the lights were on or off.

Clean and functional is how we would rate this property.. Unfortunately, there were several issues which spoilt it for us. Firstly the integrated fridge had broken, so a replacement had been put on top of the work surface! The en suite to the main bedroom had a bath with a shower overhead however, the shower screen was broken. When placing books in the bedside cabinet the handle came off in my hand, a crude attempt to repair it hadn't worked. The lighting throughout the property was inadequate, with the lighting in the en suite like twilight. The double bed was very firm and totally uncomfortable for me, we would have tried the twin bedded room except only one bed was made up and there was no clean bedding available for the other bed. We very nearly returned home after just three nights but battled though and came home a day early.

The booking itself and everything thereafter in terms of admin was handled very well and the property was as described.. We were aware there was no wi-fi and accepted that situation. However, we do feel that nowadays all properties should have wi-fi if it is practical to install a phone line as it would have been here. Quite apart from being able to keep in touch while away should one wish to do so, it also makes it easy to research places to visit, check opening times and so on. Admittedly there was a good 3G signal but one of our party had reason to want to use online banking and using the public system isn't ideal. We would have been happy to have paid a little extra to have had the facility. We were also slightly surprised that there was no visitors book. The comments of previous visitors can, in our experience, be very helpful sometimes in terms of recommendations of places to go, places to eat and so on. These comments aren't, I stress, intended as any criticism but simply as suggestions as to how the experience of visitors to the property might be enhanced.

We felt that although the setting was lovely and overall the accomadtion was comfortable.. It was missing some items in the kitchen such as a measuring jug and scales. The lighting in both bathrooms was close to inadequate. For example the lighting in the double room en suite meant it was difficult the shave. The paint is flaking off the walls in the bathroom which I expect is due to damp. The toliet in the twin room wasn't very stable.

A beautiful, spacious holiday home.. Lovely position on the edge of the village. Plenty of walks and great meals in the two pubs in the village. Peaceful and quiet with no one to bother you. Would definitely go back.

The cottage is very spacious and the area is lovely. The actual cottage has so much more potential. The rooms were big but the beds were small and bedding skimpy. The towels were thin and worn. The amount of crockery and cutlery was not overly generous e.g.. no potato masher. The water pressure was the worst problem. In the bathroom of the 2nd bedroom if two people used the toilet after each other as they might before going to bed or in the morning the toilet did not have enough water to flush the second time. The bath took 10 minutes to fill to a couple of inches. A bit of money spent could make it so much better.

The Coach House was much bigger than we thought and the village was an easy walk in and very nice. Collecting the key was very straight forward. A very enjoyable stay.

Have stayed here many times and have always enjoyed it.
December 2013
This is a lovely cottage, extremely well renovated by the friendly owner. The village is a good base for loads of excellent walks and is itself worth spending time in - not to speak of the nearby forest walks, stately homes, gardens, and other places of interest.

Stunning barn conversion. Helpful owner. Lovely village and local walks.

September 2013
The conversion of the barn is excellent and the pictures on the website did not do justice to the size of the property. The living area which incorporates the lounge, dining area and kitchen is massive, and the two double bedrooms are big too. Thornton le Dale is a lovely area to make as a holiday base.

September 2012
Lovely cottage in a pretty rural village with lots to do in the surrounding area. Limited mobile phone reception meant we could really get away from it all. We've already recommended to friends and family.
September 2012
This lovely cottage is really comfortable and ideal for less abled people as it is all on one level. All rooms are nicely decorated and plenty of towels provided in the bathrooms. There is parking and also a small seating area outside where you can catch the sun. We have been here before and would return. It is in a quite location a short distance from the village centre (which can get quite busy) and so its peaceful and not on a main road. I dont want to make it sound too good otherwise I will not find a free week next year to book again.

A comfortable cottage in a convenient location.
December 2011
The welcome was friendly and relaxed. The converted barn was very spacious and the beds really comfortable. We had everything we needed (except that we forgot to bring towels and had to buy some). Apart from needing a new set of saucepans, the barn was well equipped. The furniture and some utensils are a bit old fashioned, but this added to the charm. The location was absolutely fabulous, just a roll on your bike downhill to Thornton-le-Dale, really close to the Dalby Forest and easy traveling distance to the dramatic North Yorkshire Moors and stunning coastline. A fantastic place to stay for an action packed family holiday. We would love to come back.

A very immaculate 2 bedroom property everything is of the highest standard a credit to the owner. Thornton-le-Dale is very picturesque village and is an ideal place to tour the West Yorkshire Moors only 2 miles from Pickering and well worth a steam train ride across the Moors is also nicely position for visiting Scarborough Filey Briddlinton and the coast we would not hesitate in returning in later years.
December 2009
We really enjoyed our stay at the property Ref 1754 at Thornton le Dale. It was very relaxing and comfortable. The only problem we had was my mother being disabled she had a problem going up and down the step to and from the kitchen. The bedrooms were very comfortable and peaceful. We found Thornton le Hole very pretty and laidback and would deffinatly return. We would recomend this property to anybody who would like a base to stay while traveling the North York Moors and surrounding area.
