The Old Chapel Countryside Cottage Self-Catering

Holiday home
The Old Chapel was fully re-built in 2008 to replicate the original wooden structure dating back to 1867, and has been featured in the press locally and nationally, on TV's 'Homes Under The Hammer' and in 'Dorset Life' magazine because of its interesting and unusual appearance and interior. This detached former chapel is situated in the peaceful rural hamlet of Huntingford and features a stunning timber-clad interior, with a high beamed, vaulted ceiling and splendid galleried landing overlooking the living area. The whole property has a light, airy and spacious ambience. The accommodation includes one attractive eaves bedroom, a fitted kitchen and bathroom at the rear, and a living area which includes sitting and dining areas and a warming wood burner. The Old Chapel provides fabulous holiday living in a glorious part of the country.

Area
Situated in the midst of splendid unspoiled countryside on the borders of Dorset and Wiltshire, Huntingford is also close to the famous attractions of Longleat House and Safari Park with its lions, and the historic hilltop town of Shaftesbury (made famous by the original Hovis advert). The mysterious stone circle of Stonehenge, the stunning cathedral city of Salisbury, Wilton House and Dorset's incredible Jurassic Coast are all a little further afield, but still easily accessible.

Explore the fossils and stunning beaches of Dorset's Jurassic Coast, visit historic Sherborne and Shaftesbury, or enjoy the footpaths, country lanes and thatched-roof pubs Dorset offers.

Lovely area.. Very well equipped cottage. Wonderful owners! Large and homely, restful living space, comfortable and warm.

The cosiness and comfort in mid-winter, the kindness and thoughtfulness that our hosts (John and Jenny) showed with the Christmas tree and decorations, the home-baked mince pies to welcome us, and their general friendliness and warmth, made this a very special experience.. Add to that the beautiful area, the peace and rural quiet - and the feeling of warmth and tranquillity that the Chapel exudes.... this is a place we would love to return to!

A beautiful Chapel in a quiet location.. Very warm and cosy. Spent Christmas there, and it gave us everything we wanted. Well fitted out with enough pots etc to cook Christmas lunch. Local pub just a short drive away, probably walkable in the summer. Mr and Mrs Wood gave us the warmest of welcomes and could not do enough to make sure our stay was enjoyable

The Old Chapel was one of the most unique and quirky properties we have stayed in.. Myself and my partner chose this place as we are keen walkers and nature lovers and the surrounding areas are breathtakingly beautiful. The Chapel itself was cosy, comfortable and full of character. The owners were helpful and friendly, giving us some great pointers on local walks, pubs, and other areas of interest. I would highly recommend staying there to anyone who wants a quiet break away from city life.

Exceptional peace and comfort - a precious find.. Downmarked on cleanliness but only due to being honest - it is a country location with high ceiling and naturally found a few cobwebs. Owners very welcoming and close at hand if any problems, but there were none. PS: Although owners nearby they were never intrusive.

August 2018
The owners were lovely and very close to hand to give advice on where to go and help with anything regarding the cottage.. The cottage is in a typical quiet rural location, so it would mean a drive to the nearest town, but if you want a quiet and cosy cottage to just get away from it all this place is ideal.

August 2018
Lovely renovated chapel, ideal for couples.. Very warm welcome from the owners who were able to advise about places to visit and to eat. Excellent base for visiting attractions in all the surrounding counties. A week is not enough to see everything - we shall definitely return.

July 2018
Excellent all round base for quiet week-end.. On arrival, John & Jenny made us feel most welcome. The Chapel is a lovely restoration and well appointed. In fact more than we needed for a brilliant Summer weekend. We picked this location as it was a somewhat cheaper option to allow us to visit National Trust at Stourhead. Whilst Mere was rather basic, we missed out Gillingham and found Shaftesbury, which proved an excellent choice to stroll around. Saturday morning was really buzzing; the Mitre proving to be a good choice for food and drink. Sitting in The Chapel garden, we enjoyed the sun; sitting indoors, we could certainly imagine a cosy Winter's evening. In summary, a lovely country break. Thanks.

The Chapel emerges impressively from the surrounding countryside as you travel in from the main road, and once there the property is well thought out, well equipped and very peaceful, with a good space outside for the kids to run about in.. The owners were friendly, helpful and we would love to come again for a longer break some time in the future!

It was lovely to stay in a different type of accommodation. On arrival we had a warm welcome from the owners who live opposite the Chapel. The main room was bigger than we expected and always warm. The beds were very comfortable, the bathroom was also much bigger than expected and the towels provided were of good quality. It's in a lovely area with lots to see and do.

Beautiful little chapel, full of character and so peaceful. Just the place to get out of the city and re-charge your batteries! The owners are lovely. We were met by home made chocolate cookies and all things necessary for a nice hot cuppa. The owners are a real font of knowledge regarding places to see in the surrounding area and kept us well supplied with logs for the wood burner. My daughter and I had a fabulous long weekend. Wish we could have stayed longer!

We regularly visited this area when our children were young and wanting to return again, found this delightfully restored chapel just south of the a303. This main road can help you get about quickly, but is not close enough to spoil the peace and quiet. We were made very welcome by John and Jennie Wood to this spacious cottage, which is well equipped and very comfortable. Stourhead is a wonderful garden just north of the main road and for the 'lads' there is The Fleet air arm Museum just half an hour away. Check out the Carrier deck. For Dad, a visit to the extensive Haynes Motor Museum just up the road. Heading to Weymouth with children? On the right of that road is Maiden Castle, an amazing, terraced site of the fort there that it took the Romans to conquer. Our young sons never forgot fighting there, one a Brit, the other a Roman. Things like this bring history to life in young minds. There are so many places to visit in Wiltshire and Dorset, this lovely cottage is a perfect location. Helen and Stephen Wright

Ideal away from it all kind of holiday. The unique accommodation was beautifully presented. We particularly enjoyed the wood burning stove - something we had not come across before. Exactly as the photos show on Sykes website, it is a spacious, well furnished cottage for two. Less than a year since it was completely rebuilt, it forms a good base for walkers, visits to one of the best landscape gardens in England and close to Shaftesbury and Salisbury. Owners very friendly, live across road and take pride in their unique property. Highly recommended for a quiet week.

We were very delighted with this property and the careful attention to detail in making it very user friendly. The owners were very helpful, welcoming and considerate and we were so please with the privacy and quiet of the position of the house. It was also very delightfully easy to access from London and the return trip only took us two hours. Such a wonderful contrast between rural Dorset and the bustle and fumes of London

My holiday was very last minute (the day before I went) and staff at Sykes were very helpful.. I described what I was looking for and hey presto, it was exactly right! The Old Chapel was awesome - a real 'wow' moment when I went in, which stayed with me all week. The owners were great. I loved the location - right on the border of three counties, so lots to explore. I loved being on a farm, having cows as my neighbours - quite a change from the city life I lead!
