The Old Chapel Countryside Cottage Self-Catering
Holiday home This is a delightful, detached, stone built converted chapel situated in the sleepy hamlet of Rudland, just two miles from Fadmoor. The sympathetic conversion has led to an enchanting mixture of period-pieces and modern living space. With a ground floor double bedroom with en-suite, a quirky mezzanine-level bedroom set above the spacious living room and a wood-burning stove, this is an incredibly cosy property with lots of character. The country-style kitchen boasts a stable-door, opening onto the sunny mature gardens with a pretty beck trickling down the centre. In addition there is excellent walking in the region with the magnificent scenery of the National Park and the many picturesque villages such as Hutton-le-Hole. The base of the North York Moors Steam Railway is situated in the local town of Pickering and slightly further afield, visitors can find museums, castles, trout fishing and local market towns.

Beautiful spot and wonderful dark skies too, even had a visiting barn owl..
The Old Chapel is lovely.. Such a cosy atmosphere and the surrounding scenery is just gorgeous. The place was in perfect condition when we arrived and we all found it very comfortable, the beds especially! Would definitely book again and have already recommended it to family members. Thank you for a lovely stay.
The Old Chapel is such a lovely cottage, it was so enjoyable to wake up in the morning and listen to the birds and the sheep.. The cottage has everything you need. We enjoyed family time and playing the board games avaliable. The location was great, 10 minutes drive to local village. We were so close to the Moors. We visited Whitby, Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay. Hutton Le Hole is a cute village with a lovely tea room called The Forge, lovely Scones, Cakes and Sandwiches etc. Great Ayton has the best pie shop called Petch. We can't wait to stay again.
Very happy with the quality of the property & it was exactly as described.. The location was fantastic and helped by the amazing weather over the Easter weekend, my family & I had a great time.
The use of a key safe by the owners, made the arrival & departure experience very straightforward.
Would definitely recommend The Old Chapel.....it's a great place to stay in a beautiful part of the country.
The Old Chapel is a fantastic place to stay.. Set in a beautiful location, the cottage was much bigger than I'd expected, with plenty of room for our two children and all their Christmas presents. Very comfy and lovely and warm too. I'd definitely recommend it.
A wonderful cottage.. We booked last minute but the owners were very accommodating.
Very comfortable, the children enjoyed playing in the garden. The facilities in the cottage were great, we will hopefully be back
The location was perfect as we could walk from the cottage on footpaths and quiet roads without having to use the car.. The cottage was very comfortable for 6 with plenty of kitchen crockery, cutlery etc
The nearest pub is about 1.5 miles away and we walked there and back for an evening meal.
One suggestion: could the garden chairs in the shed be made available? The weather was good enough to sit in the garden.
The Old Chapel is a lovely cottage right on the edge of the moors full of charm and character.. It has all the amenities needed for a relaxing break and was comfortable with my disabled father. Yet again, we enjoyed a lovely relaxing week here.
A pleasant place to stay in a delightful isolated situation, with an ideally relaxing garden (plus local rabbits to mow the lawn).. Luxuriously equipped. The first two evenings we found the cottage too cold to sit in and relax comfortably. It's a pity the owner doesn't trust hirers to put the central heating on or off as needed - this approach is something we've never met before in over twenty years of cottage holidays and seems parsimonious in what was by no means a cheap cottage. We accept that the offer of telephoning for help was provided, but when there's no usable mobile signal in the cottage or immediately around it, this is hardly a useful suggestion.
We would also query the height of the one and only step between the upper and lower area of the lounge. Someone coming down at night from the mezzanine bedroom to use the loo could have a nasty fall. Ought there to be a white strip to indicate the presence of the step?
I'm not entirely sure where to start.. We had an amazing stay from start to finish. If you're reading this and thinking of booking to stay here, do not hesitate! It will not disappoint. The Old Chapel is one of those places you wish you owned, my friends and I all agreed that we really could live there. The photos, and it's exterior are deceiving, the place is like the Tardis, it is huge inside by comparison to how it appears on the outside.
We stayed for 3 nights over New Year's Eve, we were lucky that it bucketed down with snow, making the cottage and the landscape picturesque, we were kept lovely and warm by the large log burner and huge antique radiators. The place was reminiscent of the cottage in the film, The Holiday (for those of you who have seen it).
The location is perfect, if you'd like a secluded break but not completely out in the middle of nowhere. The village of Gillamoor is only 2 miles away which has a lovely little pub, and was a great little winter's walk.
The layout of the cottage is beautiful, with an open plan loft converted bedroom overlooking the living room, the living room is spacious and comes complete with a TV, DVD player, a stereo and drinks fridge. There was even a Christmas tree put up when we arrived. The master bedroom has a huge new bed, queen size I believe, it was definitely different to the one we saw in the photographs. There is also a modern en suite bathroom. The kitchen is a good size and has almost all the necessary utensils. The garden is amazing and has a little brook running alongside the house. as well as having a good sized patio and a outdoor bench and table, which would be great for BBQ's in the warmer months.
I really could go on rambling about the place.
We will most certainly be looking at staying again in the spring time. I really can't recommend the place enough!
Thank you for an amazing weekend.
Now spent our 3rd time at the Old Chapel and again we have had a lovely time. Place on arrival was clean and tidy enough to be happy. Free towels is new this time not had that before. The surrounding area is lovely and very peaceful. If you would like to do some fishing head to "Buzzers Pond" just through Kirkbymoorside. Most of the surrounding villages are small but have things to see and do. Scarborough was a great day out and not too far to go. Much better than Whitby and Bridlington in our opinion. Lucky we had some lovely sunshine and it was lovely to be out in the garden which is ample big enough for children to play in and very safe. Altogether another great time and we look forward to returning.
The cottage was beautiful and very well furnished.. The location was lovely, just on the outskirts of the forest and we were made to feel very welcome. Good accommodation for our two small children and ourselves. The owners were very help, even when we failed to read the conditions properly and forgot to bring towels with us. All in all a lovely place to stay
Amazing, characterful cottage. I really want to buy it and retire there. The pics on Sykes Cottages do not do it any justice but then neither will the ones I'm about to upload to TripAdvisor. We rented it to visit Daughter No 1, near her new home and it very easily accommodated all four generations of the extended family.
The cottage is based on a Victorian, Primitive Methodist chapel with two architecturally sympathetic extensions. The chapel contains the lounge and mezzanine 3rd bedroom above. The other extension contains the two ground-floor bedrooms (one en-suite) and bathroom. The third extension contains a very grand kitchen and dining table for up to 10 people. There is a good size garden, half-lawn half woods, with a little brook. There are three patio/decking/picnic areas with picnic tables. There is off-road parking for up to three cars and roadside-verge parking for two more.
The owner seems very experienced in holiday lets as every detail and gadget is catered for and documented helpfully with little notices about the place. A large selection of books, maps and leaflets on the locality are available. On hearing that we were bringing a toddler, the owner very generously installed a very sturdy, child-proof fire guard to surround the wood-burner. You can't ask for more considerate service than that. Standard broadband over wifi was installed in Oct 2016, 5.8Mbps download on average. Absolutely jack-squat mobile signal though, unless you walk 100 metres up the road to a cattle-grid.
The housekeeper lives in Willow Cottage, just 50 metres up the road and she is very nice too. Unfortunately I needed the services of an ambulance on my first morning there and she plugged a landline in for us so we could easily call out a doctor again if needs be.
It is superbly placed for walking groups to base themselves. It is right at the top of its dale, within 100m of the open moorland. You could simply start all your walks from the cottage. It is incredibly secluded! Location for walkers: 54.320760, -0.984311, OS Grid SE 661 921, Explorer OL26 North Yorkshire Moors. It's really hard to see even on an Explorer map as it is un-named and hidden by a complex convergence of map lines & colours. Just look for the teeny-tiny square at 7 o'clock from the "C" of "Willow Cottage".
Despite it being so remote and exposed, it was cosy warm for our autumn visit and could easily handle the depths of winter I reckon. The central heating has just been upgraded and the building is heated by several, massive, retro "school" radiators. The wood-burner is quite capable of turning the very large lounge and mezzanine into a sauna by itself anyway.
Handy tip - Tesco delivers there! Postcode YO62 7JJ.
The Old Chapel is lovely.. Clean, comfortable and very well equipped. We have holidayed on the moors many times in the last 50 yrs.,and was delighted with the property, and its location in a part of the moors which we have somehow overlooked over the years, usually journeying on up through Pickering to Whitby area.Overall,a nice break, despite the typical moors weather, fog and drizzle, but it doesn't detract from the beauty of the moors, and it doesn't rain in the "Lion" on Blakey Ridge!! Thank You..
All good - great place at a great price ;-)
We had a really good week.. We had everything we needed and tea coffee and milk there which was very welcome after a long journey. The chapel was always nice and warm with plenty of hot water to come back to after a day out exploring. The birds and rabbits were fun to watch in the garden. We found plenty to do in North Yorkshire to fill our week. Thank you.
We stayed for the May Bank Holiday week, and wished we could have stayed longer. The Old Chapel looks deceptively small from the outside, but it opens up like Dr Who's tardis with a lovely spacious, high-ceilinged lounge with a mezzanine loft (which our son immediately laid claim to) and a big well-equipped kitchen with a lovely view onto the garden. Two other bedrooms were fine (one en suite), and there is a good-sized family bathroom. Everything was very clean (our one anxiety from some early reviews) and well maintained.
The location is lovely, right up on the edge of the moors, no near neighbours or noise apart from the birdsong - curlew, cuckoo, snipe, woodcock, red grouse amongst others. It is a perfect base for walkers and there is so much to do in the area (eg Rievaulx Abbey), or for a day on the coast (eg Whitby or the Puffins at RSPB Bempton). A car is a must - several really nice pubs within 15 minutes drive, Helmsley is great for shops and Scott's Fish and Chips. Beadlam Grange farm shop has a lovely deli and does great breakfasts.
The Old Chapel is a real home from home. We will be back.
We liked the seclusion of the property and that it was so close to the Moors. The Chapel was furnished like a home and had everything you needed. Great location for days out and for eating. Some excellent food eaten! Some fantastic views locally. We would recommend the Old Chapel and will go back again.
A fabulous place - Very cosy. We had an amazing time and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for peace and tranquillity, we will definitely be going back!
The cottage was in a lovely location and well maintained, the kids loved the little wooded area and the treasure chest of toys to play with. The cottage was well stocked with everything you could think of! A super little gem of a place.
The cottage was well equipped with everything and everything. It is in a lovely tranquil area, it was peaceful and relaxing. The beds were extremely comfortable and the sheets were high quality cotton. We loved the garden which was perfect for sitting out in and enjoying the early evening birdsong, including a cuckoo. There are many small villages to visit in the surrounding area and it is a beautiful part of the country.
Absolutely lovely property is idyllic surroundings. Beautiful garden where you can see the odd rabbit and listed to the cuckoo. The cottage is well appointed and was spotlessly clean. The beds were extremely comfortable with quality bed linen. We really loved our stay here and were sorry to leave. It is a great base for travelling into local villages of Pickering or Helmsley, not to mention places further afield such as York or Whitby. The cottage has a charm to it and there are very nice neighbours not too far away who are on hand should you need anything. All in All we had a brilliant stay.
Peaceful setting. Comfortable accommodation. Lovely garden. Thank you again.
This cottage was even nicer than we were expecting from the details on the website. It was very homely, welcoming and beautifully carefully furnished. There was a lot of attention to detail. It was very easy to relax here from the moment we arrived. Even with three kids in tow aged 4, 7 10 we were all able to relax and enjoy quality time together. The kids especially found the space and layout of the cottage very exciting and conducive to having fun! The perfect place for relaxing in front of the log burner or going out on walks straight from the front door.
The cottage looked perfect and had lots of character inside. It was cosy with the wood burner on and I loved where the cottage was positioned. I would definitely recommend staying in this cottage.
This house is in the perfect location for a get away from it all holiday. It's peaceful and quiet, and just on the edge of the moors -single track roads lead up to this house. The house had everything that we needed and was well equipped. There was lots of space and it had loads of character. The owners had placed many information leaflets on what there was in the areas surrounding the house and there is indeed plenty to do to fill your holiday. All I would say is that it could do with a little attention paid to cleaning the nooks and crannies of the house. The kitchen units especially. Just be prepared to travel for up to an hour to visit places like York or Scarborough- the roads add time onto your journey but the countryside is beautiful so we didn't mind. Also, you will not get wifi whilst in the cottage which for us was perfect - great evenings spending quality time with our children with no technology in sight. :)
Wonderful position on the edge off the moor. Well equipped and comfortable. Well placed for easy access to the beauties of Yorkshire.
This is an excellent location for cyclists and walkers as it is so close to the Moors and straight out on to the paths or bike trails. Brilliant rides each day with a new and varied challenge. Amazing scenery, worth all the leg work to get there.
The location of the property on the edge of moorland was ideal as we are keen walkers and cyclists. We appreciated the isolation of the property. We enjoyed sitting in front of the wood-burner and were grateful for the starter pack of logs. The tea and coffee on the kitchen table were welcome when we arrived. The kitchen was well appointed and had plenty of pots and pans for indulging our fondness of cooking. The mezzanine bedroom over the wood burner was very cosy. The owners kindly allowed us to use the dog run to house our cycles. We would definitely consider re-visiting this property.
Interesting cottage, very comfortable. Very suitable for a family Christmas break. Well situated in a nice area.
A lovely comfortable, peaceful property.
This is a beautiful peaceful location. The old chapel has been cleverly converted and is well appointed with vast array of maps, guides, games etc. There is an excellent pub in gillamoor, about two miles away, with great food and beer. Would have been helpful to be able to boost the central heating which is on a set time control and the hot water was a bit hit and miss. The garden is lovely. Overall, a great place to stay if you want the peace of the countryside.
Would not bother with this cottage. It has very dirty and tired. Not cleaned properly. We had to clean all the kitchen equipment before we could use it! Have plenty of photos to back up our claim. Poor response from the owner and housekeeper calling us liars. Had to leave early as mice where eating our food in the fridge! Bedding was dirty. General condition of the cottage is very tired. Stay well away. Would not recommend to anyone which is a shame as this property has potential. Did get a partial refund after making a complaint.
It was in such a lovely location, just on the edge of the moors, within walking distance.
This was, by far, the best cottage we have stayed in. The cottage was wonderfully remote and yet still accessible to everywhere on the Moors. It was a peaceful haven... even with 3 boys in tow!
Sitting nice and snug by the log fire when it started to snow. The views of the snowy hills.
A very homely cottage in a beautiful location. It has a gorgeous garden and a well equipped kitchen, we would definitely recommend the property.
We stayed at The Old Chapel for a long weekend - bitterly cold weather but once we had the log burner going the cottage was very cosy and welcoming. We loved the remoteness and the total peace and quiet. The location was perfect, step outside the cottage and you are on the moors. The cottage is well equipped but we felt that a few things were growing rather tired. The settees have seen better days, and the kitchen needed cleaning a little more thoroughly. As it was a bitterly cold weekend it would have been nice to have had access to a supply of logs nearer to the cottage. The snow came down on the second night of our stay but fortunately we had bought additional logs in Kirkbymoorside. Had we not planned so well though we could have been stuck as the car was snowed in the next day. There were logs in the garden but they were padlocked. Perhaps for future cold spells it would be a good idea to allow access to more logs should they be needed at an appropriate charge. The snow made the stay extra special and the two mile walk in the snow to The Royal Oak in Gillamoor for a wonderful Sunday lunch was a walk and a lunch we will remember for a long time!
Very peaceful, very comfortable, charming style of chapel with a lovely garden and a very good wood burning stove.
We have stayed in The Chapel before and love the remoteness of it. It is lovely and quiet yet close to many attractions in the North York Moors. A great week away.
The booking was stress free. The Old Chapel was in an ideal location and the garden could not be faulted in any way, great for sitting out watching the wild life.
Mr D A Cooper
Fantastic cottage, the renovation had been thoughtfully and tastefully done. The chapel was very comfortable but kept its old charm as well. I would highly recomend it for a holiday.
Lovely cottage, very tastefully restored and in an excellent location.
The location of the cottage and its character were excellent. The cottage was well stocked and had everything we needed, including travel cot and high chair. We would recommend this to others and certainly use it again.
The cottage was stunning and set in a fantastic location. Scenery was exceptional. It was everything we hoped it would be and more.
The Old Chapel was lovely, in a wonderful position and had a lovely garden. We were very lucky with the weather. Loved watching the rabbits in the garden and the large variety of birds that visited. The Old Chapel was well situated for exploring the area. We have been to the area many times before and always find something new to explore.
We had a great few days there and it was snowing so that made it even better
We took two of our grandchildren for a holiday they are 1 teen ager and 1 verging on teenager. Both like walking and seeing the sights . This was perfect for all. Pickering nearby
for the Steam Train up to Whitby ( and all points in between. Eating out in the local hostelry was fab. The cottage was so well equipped and beautifully decorated it felt like home. loads of info on surrounding attractions. Nearby Helmsley was alovely Yorkshire. Quite the best standard of holiday accommodation we have ever had and we have stayed in quite a few over the years with the grandchildren The lady who looked after the property was really helpful andthere have been a lot of happy reviews in the visitors book.Sykes have it on all counts including competitive pricing Well done
The cottage location was perfect for walking the surrounding areas. The cottage itself was extremely comfortable and welcoming. We would have no problem recommending it.
Nice relaxing location and well kept gardens. Lovely wood burner. Pleasant property overall.
Have rented many cottages over the years through various companies but have never experienced the overall quality as at the Old Chapel. The standard was first class and the location idyllic. The ease of booking was also first class and this was real value for money
Lovely cottage, beautiful location!
A very lovely place for a holiday, enjoyed it a great deal. Great location.
Very peaceful. Several walks available directly from the cottage. Great food at the Plough nearby.
The Old Chapel was delightful, set in a very picturesque hamlet.Well equipped kitchen with beautiful views over the garden. Loved the huge living room with the wood burner, just what we needed. We would definitely recommend this cottage and will return in the future.
Beautiful, peaceful location.
Close to open moorland with good walking. Close to North Yorkshire coast, and interesting smaller towns and villages.
Absolutely loved it! Will definitely return and have already recommended it to friends and family.
The location of the cottage. The Old Chapel was everything we hoped it would be and more. I would certainly recommend it and hopefully we will get to stay in the chapel again real soon. Thanks Sykes Cottages. 10/10
Fantastic accommodation in a great location. If you don't explore all that is available at this location you can always relax in comfort at the cottage or in the beautiful garden.
An outstanding property in an ideal location. North Yorkshire offers so much for all ages in terms of activities, places to visit and first rate places to eat.
The house was excellent in its cleanliness and the decor. We particularly liked the way the chapel had been refurbished..
