Self-Catering Reviews

Mrs Walsh
September 2020
The cottage was beautiful and equipped beyond our expectations and the owner supplied various luxury extras that went above and beyond.. We booked this property due to its village location and the fact that it was in close proximity to 2 village pubs. It appears that 1 of the pubs closed down 18 months ago and unfortunately, due to covid19, the other is only open 4 days per week. so instead of going out for a stroll and drink in the evenings, we had to travel to get food or drinks which defeated the object of booking this location. If you want to eat or drink out on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, you have a long walk or a drive to get something.

The cottage and the owner were exceptional, it was our first time in the area .... The cottage and the owner were exceptional, it was our first time in the area and we enjoyed every minute, the cottage was really cosy and very comfortable, we took essentials with us but everything was provided for us including flowers, wine,Tim's homemade plum jam, it was like been at home

Cottage is Spotless, cosy and very well equipped Kitchen, excellent bathroom facilities, quality bedding and a comfy bed.. We had lots added extras with a lovely host which made our stay comfortable and cosy. The location is great, we followed the host guide and headed straight up to Birkrigg Common which was our garden.. We were happy to drive out to The Walks Scafell Pike, the Old Man and visited Keswick and the busier areas knowing we were returning to a peaceful hamlet with the locals

We stayed here at the end of June, and the owner has left all the amenities you could need for your stay (all apart from food as you'd expect). There is free WiFi, TV, DVD with a selection for your entertainment and some books. Tea, Coffee etc are all provided too. Besides that there is a decent DAB clock radio, Hoover, Dishwasher, Washing machine, gas cooker, microwave etc - nothing that hasn't been left out. The place is spotless and it is close to a decent pub that serves good food (and huge fish and chips). A lot of the attractions are all within about 40 minutes drive away and in my opinion, The best supermarket in the world is 10 minutes drive away (Booth's).

What a gem of a place! - Modern, clean and cosy. Mr Beard was really accommodating and welcoming, giving us instructions on where the cottage was located prior to travelling. There was nice little touches around the home including milk, tea, coffee and even a bottle of chilled wine in the fridge! We really enjoyed our stay and the location was great for a relaxing getaway as well as being close to the lakes and activities. Thanks again

Accommodation not as listed.. Contact telephone number was incorrect. Photograph showing hotel entrance was the village pub, which ceased trading two months prior to our visit. After returning to the pub after a prolonged searching of the area to try to locate the accommodation, the ex landlord appeared in his dressing gown, has no idea where the property was, but offered a torch to search the area (which had suffered a power cut the month prior and was not yet rectified). Accommodation had no wired internet access and no bath as advertised. Power cuts had affected the boiler and therefore no hot water or heating was available. Sykes refuses to provide alternative suitable accommodation, offering instead 1/3 refund on the amount paid. After sourcing alternative accommodation at our own expense for two days (of our ten days stay), in order to gain heat and hot water and allow Sykes time to rectify the situation, we were instead contacted multiple times and offered the same 1/3 refund and ultimately left without accommodation for the remainder of our stay.

The cottage itself was excellent, but the information said nothing about crossing a building site to the cottage.. When we arranged for the key collection, the owner told us there were some working around the entry point. Whilst these are not in the owners control the presence of lorries, diggers and concrete mixers between the public road and the cottage is very off-putting and the problem should be made clearer to renters. The owner's daughter tod us she would sort out any access problems we might have, and indeed we had none because the builders on the adjacent site werevery understanding......but it was still a building site we had not expected.

The owner telephoned us just prior to our holiday and gave us detailed directions and other information that was really appreciated.. When we arrived at the cottage, he had left a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge, a bunch of flowers and a packet of McVities chocolate thins, such a lovely gesture and a warm welcome after a long journey. Overall our weeks holiday ticked all the boxes. The cottage was well based for all the places we wanted to visit, very comfortable with all amenities you could want both in the cottage and the immediate area and an owner that gives that little bit extra. Very impressed

June 2015
Stayed here for ! week in June with my wife, and we were very pleased with our choice. The cottage was in a quiet location, was comfortable and had nearly everything one could ask for ( a light over the shower room mirror please). It makes a good base for exploring southern Lakeland and the local pub is 100 yards away ( but you wouldn't know it). There are local walks to be had offering good views of the coast, and all amenities are close by in Ulverston ( a lovely, small but lively market town).
Mrs Newton
May 2015
A lovely cosy cottage as a base for exploring the South and West of the Lake District. The weather at the beginning of May was cold and very wet but the central heating worked well. Our host was very welcoming and helpful, and the cottage had everything we needed for a relaxing week.

This is a delightful cottage in a lovely rural village. There is no sound of passing traffic and it is lovely and quiet. The owner stays next door with his family. They are a nice family and very helpful and friendly. Stayed here for 3 weeks and hope to return in the near future. It is a lovely cottage with all the mod cons. It is clean and tidy with bright decor and is suitable for a couple. The bed is extremely comfortable and the bedroom contains an ensuite toilet and shower. Excellent.

October 2014
The best accommodation we had while in England. Could not fault anything, could easily live there on a permanent basis. The owners are nice people who sure know how to fit out accommodation to please. The local area is stunning, lovely walks abound and plenty of nice places to see only a short drive away. Best holiday my wife and I have ever had.
Mrs Footman

The cottage was a pleasure to come back to at night. The surrounding attractions were varied and good. The scenery was spectacular. If this is the usual standard of your properties - we will be booking again.

This cottage was excellent; in fact it was the best equipped cottage we have ever stayed at. Every aspect of the cottage was first-class and the owner was a charming person and very helpful. We would safely recommend this property to anybody.

August 2014
The cottage was ideally situated for our particular needs. It was also ideal for visiting the places that we wanted to see, going as far afield as Kendal and Ravenglass without difficulty. We loved the peninsula on which the cottage was located and particularly liked Great Urswick. There was nothing that we did not like about our holiday and, given the opportunity, we would happily return. As far as the cottage is concerned, it fully met our expectations and the owner, who lives next door, was very friendly and helpful.

The Crook is a beautiful cottage situated in a quiet village just to the south of the lakes. It is extremely well equipped and very comfortable, providing everything that a couple could need. The owner (next door) is charming and helpful. The Crook provides an excellent base from which to explore the lakes or to go walking, and a quiet refuge away from the main tourist areas to return to in the evening. Great Urswick is a picturesque village with two pubs, one of which serves good food. We would definitely stay in The Crook again when we return to the area.
Mr Goodier

The cottage is in a great place to visit Lakeland and provides a very good base to explore from. Lots of attractions within 20min drive.

July 2014
The Crook is a beautiful cottage situated in a small village just south of the lakes. It is very well equipped, providing everything that a couple could need and the owner (next door) is very welcoming. Great Urswick is in a great location just at the southern end of the lakes, giving easy access to both major sightseeing attractions and good walking. The village is at the northern end of a small tarn and has two pubs within a couple of minutes walk from the cottage - The General Burgoyne also serves excellent food. The market town of Ulverston is close by, with a good selection of tea rooms and cafés. Although there are major supermarkets in Barrow, the local chain Booths has a big store on the edge of Ulverston, which is every bit as good. We would definitely stay here again when we visit the lakes next time.
Mr Coleman
June 2014
The location of the cottage was central to all the places we wanted to visit around the lakes. The cottage was well equipped and very homely. The cottage was comfortable and was a good place to relax after a long day of touring the lakes. The owners made us feel very welcome and were helpful with information and places to visit and see. I will definitely stay at this cottage again when we visit the lake district next.

The cottage was a lovely, warm, relaxing place to stay. It was close to the coast and not far to places such as Ambleside. Ulverston is a lovely town to saunter around. The cottage had everything we needed and more. The kitchen had everything we needed! Overall a perfect cottage for a perfect stay.

We particularly liked the peace and quiet of the area, and the easy access to Ulverston and the south lakes. There was a lovely walk from the cottage up to Birkrigg Common, where the view over Morcambe Bay was stunning.

April 2014
The accomodation was excellent. I have stayed in a lot of holiday cottages and usually they are not quite as good as the photos. In this case the cottage was far better than the photos. It was excellent. Warm, comfortable and had been well thought out. It was also very well equipped. The bathroom turned out to be the best past, a lovely surprise. Fantastic location. I am a person who like variety but I would certainly thing of coming again. The owners where very welcoming but not intrusive. Thank you. An excellent week.

November 2013
The cottage was warm, cosy and very peaceful. We live in a very quiet area in Dorset, so it is always a concern that our holiday accommodation may not be as quiet as at home. We need not have had any concerns regarding The Crook. The owner and his daughter were very friendly. The scenery was magnificent and the weather, kind to us.

This was a perfect place for our get away to the Lakes. Although it is on the edge of the lake district it is in a lovely location surrounded by rolling hills and open countryside. Set in an ideal village location there is plenty to do all around. Within a few minutes you are into the traditional lakeland setting and all the well known beauty spots are within easy travelling distance. There are two lovely village pubs one of which was an awarding winning pub for food and is well worth a visit. Our hosts were warm and welcoming and the cottage was 5 star quality.
Mrs Gatman
June 2013
The cottage was five star and the owners very friendly and helpful without being overwhelming. The village was quaint and the people very friendly. The two pubs were welcoming and the food in the Gasgoine was excellent - would recommend this cottage/location to anyone.
