The Cow Byre is an absolutely stunning cottage - tastefully and creatively decorated with reclaimed materials, and with so many luxurious touches.. This out-of-the-way spot was the perfect base for some beautiful walks (we particularly enjoyed a 10-mile round hike from the nearby Tan Hill Inn), but we could have happily spent the entire holiday in the cottage - watching the birds from the patio, reading by the fire, and watching the sun set over the Eden Valley. Mark was a thoughtful and attentive host, and we had a fabulous time.

The cottage was absolutely beautiful, as was the surrounding area- could not fault the amenities. The space in the cottage was very well thought out, cosy, comfortable and cute. Lovely little gifts left which we enjoyed and the bath was great! Only problems were that there was extremely loud and disruptive building work going on in the garden attached to the cottage from 8am which we were not informed of. This obviously woke us up, was not peaceful and the huge crain over the house was a little off putting on arrival. The owner was very apologetic and offered us a generous discount given the circumstances, for which we were very grateful. Pans in the kitchen were provided but some were very greasy? Thank you for a lovely stay, would be more than happy to return in the future.

We has such a great time at the cow Byre.. Felt very welcome but also we had our space and privacy which was important to us. The cow Byre is a really perfect place to relax. The layout just works brilliantly to get you into the right mood to watch birds out the window, go for walks, read and chill. We needed it so much and were very pleased with every aspect of our stay. I loved the bath and the fact that it’s in the bedroom and the whole open plan layout makes everything feel even more luxurious. They are working on an extension next door which means occasional banging but it wasn’t continuous and really didn’t disrupt our time at all. Thanks again.

The cow byre cottage is absolutely fantastic, the whole quirky feel and look of the place,, the luxury feel of the bedding and towels, the clean presentation and the arrival gifts , the whole break was perfect, a great base for going exploring or a romantic cosy chill out place..

We were looking for a weekend break for our 23rd wedding anniversary around Kirkby Stephen and when we saw this one the decision was easy. Quaint, unusual, four-poster, great bath position... Well, the reality is even better. Didn't need the log burner as it was so mild (bit of a shame) but, yes, the gowns and slippers are a great touch as are the items in the fridge. Bed excellent, bath excellent, shower excellent, kitchen area excellent, parking excellent, Hey, we couldn't find fault with it at all. Would be happy to return in the future.

The cottage was as we hoped: romantic, cosy, a bit unusual, comfortable, Yes, it was all of these things.. We loved the layout, appreciated the dressing gowns and slippers, cookies, essentials in the fridge. We had to turn down the radiators as it simply got too warm with the outside weather remaining mild. Bath very much impressed my wife, the quality and comfort of the bed impressed as both. We would be very happy to make a future booking.

This is the second time we have been to the Cow Byre.. The first was in November and it did not take long to think of it when we wanted to get away after our wedding. The Cow Byre was the perfect location to relax after a busy few weeks and was excellent overall.

The Cow Byre is one of the best holiday cottages I have stayed in.. It is so well designed, well equipped, quirky , but cosy and comfortable at the same time. It exudes peace and tranquility and makes the most of the outstanding views across the valley. Every detail and requirement is catered for and I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending a stay at The Cow Byre.

Stayed here for a long weekend courtesy of our daughters , and one of their boyfriends... from the moment we opened the door , it was WOW !!! The place just oozes character , charm and coziness Beautiful scenery on your doorstep , red squirrels, little mouse in the wall and birds galore. The bath in the bedroom was amazing , so much imagination has gone into this place. Very very quirky , would love to return in summer! A visit to the Tan Hill pub is a must , such a remote place , Kirkby Stephen was a welcome surprise , good range of shops etc . Would thoroughly recommend a stay at the cow byre .

A fabulous quirky property.. Spent a couple of cold November days relaxing in the cottage watching the birds, and thrilled to see the red squirrels on a few occasions.Loved the bath and the cosiness.Only thing missing was a hot tub in the secluded area of the patio.Strange that there was a glass panel in the bathroom door ! Great value for money, and will be returning next year hopefully.

Have had lovely week away at this beautiful cottage! Waking up to those beautiful views every morning was a real treat! Location Is great area for both the yorkshire dales and for visiting the lakes. Not far from main roads. In peaceful area and views overlooking the dales. Amenities All the facilities you could want really, the roll top bath being the highlight! The log burner was also great and the bed very comfortable. Kitchen could maybe do with extra shelve or something for storing food otherwise can not fault it! Recommendations Walking- Ingelton Falls (South Yorkshire Dales), Aira Force (Ullswater) Local Food- Mango Tree Indian (Kirkby Stephen) Places- Scar White Cave (Ingelton), Appleby Spa Hotel (Appleby), Mountain Biking (Grizdale). Thankyou for a lovely stay and the little treats left for us on arrival was a lovely touch will recommend to family and friends :)

Just way too lovely! Cannot describe this location! The guest house feels more like 5star hotel! I feel like buying the place forever, so I can come by whenever I like. The home owner as given everything a couple could need to make this stay most comfortable! The homeowner gave us very warm hospitality. AMAZING is all I can say! The cottage is in a beautiful location, perfect for an escape away from the real world. I loved its rural location and beautiful views. The cottage is fantastically renovated and we couldn't stop admiring it. The view from the sofa over the hills is just one you can stare at all day!

January 2016
The cow byre was perfect, and just what my partner and I wanted for a romantic getaway. The view from the sofa and sitting outside with a glass of wine was particularly amazing. As it's in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District it's perfect for ramblers, although most of the classic walks in the lakes were a bit of a drive away. The owners completely leave you to it, so you're in your own little haven.

March 2015
We just returned from a three night stay at Cow Byre Cottage. The cottage is maintained to a very high standard and one of the quirkiest places I've stayed. Cow Byre has a lovely homely feel about it which is even better once you get the open log burning stove going on a cold March windy night. We took all of our own provisions and everything else we needed for a nice weekend away from it all. The grounds are very welcoming and all prior instructions are easy to follow i.e. where to park, where the key is etc. The owners where very thoughtful in the gifts they left. I won't go on too much about the Cottage as you need to visit for yourselves. The area is a walkers paradise with open fells, nature reserves etc. If you don't want to venture out on arrival to Cow Byre you need no go any further than the window as it's a bird watchers paradise, cameras to the ready and enjoy your stay; I know we did.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Cow Byre for 3 nights for a short break during his birthday period. The property was exquisite and luxurious with roll top bath, wood burning stove and four poster bed, absolutely 5 star. The break was everything we wanted and more, the accommodation had everything we needed for a more than comfortable stay as well as lovely extras such as bathrobes, slippers and a great DVD collection. Upon arrival we were greeted with a bottle of wine, a personalised card, chocolates and eggs and milk in the fridge! The views were superb and and the surrounding areas fantastic and accessible. Lisa and Mark provided a useful folder containing info about the property and also surrounding pubs, activities and things to see. We honestly could not fault a single thing about this accommodation or our stay- we shall definately be returning! Thanks again Kate & David

This idyllic cottage is a perfect location for a short relaxing break with very easy access to both the east of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Cottage is furnished with lovely attention to detail and provides quirky and endearing living space for young couples. We loved the open plan layout of the cottage - especially the views out over the hills from the fantastic bath!! We would definitely return to the cottage. Our every need was catered for while also giving us the privacy and space we wanted for our mini-moon! Highly reccommend!

One of the most beautiful and individual cottages I have ever seen. Had such a relaxing time and couldn't have enjoyed the mini break more. The wine, cookies and chocolates from Lisa and Mark were a lovely touch as was the milk and eggs. The views were phenomenal and my partner and I got quite used to waking up to such wonderful sights, even for the few short days we stayed. Very much hope to return again. Thank you for having us!

We had a fantastic week at Cow Byre. This cottage is beautiful, with bags of character and amazing views. Located between the Lakes and the Dales, perfect if you love walking. What a beautiful cottage! The photos do not really show you how lovely it is. On arrival we found we had been left a welcome card, bottle of wine and eggs and milk. The property was beautifully furnished with great attention to the design and detail. A really comfortable place to relax and unwind. All the extra touches including the roll top bath in the bedroom, crystal chandeliers and the bottle of complimentary champagne chilling in the fridge on arrival made for a really special break away. Special mention to the owners for all their help and assistance, nothing was too much trouble. We hope to find our way back to The Cow Byre very soon.

January 2014
From the wine, cookies and welcome card to the wonderful slippers and bathrobes it was clear that the owners really care about this property and the guests that stay there. Really great attention to detail made this the perfect getaway cottage. The photos really don't do it justice. Everything was just wonderful I would highly recommend staying here - although possibly not in January as the weather was appalling! The restaurant guide came in handy and on Saturday night we had a great indian meal in Kirkby Stephen, about 5 miles away.

It is easy to see why this cottage is popular for honeymoons. The bedroom is like the poshest room in the best hotel you could imagine. The whole cottage is very well equipped, though a little short on storage space. The owners are extremely friendly, without being intrusive. The setting high on the side of the Eden Valley is idyllic, and you will see lots of birds and other wildlife from the living room. From the welcome pack to the bathrobes, it is obviously a cottage that has a lot of love put into it. There was even a 'welcome' card clearly selected to reflect our enthusiasm for butterflies. You feel more like a welcome guest than a customer.
Miss Gordon

It was the perfect place for a very relaxing honeymoon in a beautiful peaceful location. The Cow Byre was decorated and equipped to a high standard for a luxurious stay.

July 2013
I booked this for a weekend treat for my wife's birthday and have to say it was the best decision I made! It is simply incredible. The pictures do not do it justice and if you are looking for a perfect, romantic weekend (or longer if you are lucky!) then this has to be the place. Lovely personal touches, such as chocolate, bottle of wine and cookies waiting upon our arrival and fresh milk and eggs all made for a wonderfully relaxing three nights. A perfect base to tour the Lakes but plenty of local walks if you dont fancy driving once you get there. I cannot recommend The Cow Byre enough and hope that one day we will be fortunate enough to return to this small piece of heaven. :)

We stayed here for our 1st wedding anniversary in May and it has been beautiful! The photos of The Cow Byre are lovely but really didn't do it justice. We were amazed at how lovely it was is the flesh! When we arrived we had milk, eggs, wine and cookies waiting for us, which was a lovely touch. The place is immaculate and decor is completely my taste. We spent the first day just saying how we could live here! I really can't rate it enough. Mark and Lisa were fab. Really friendly and helpful. The cottage is full of information on where to visit, which was really helpful. It's really nice to actually go somewhere and it be this perfect as there is usually something that can put a bit of a dampner on your holiday but there has literally been nothing. This has been nicer than our 2 week honeymoon abroad, even though the weather hasn't been brilliant, it hasnt mattered as its just nice to be here and everything be so easy! We will certainly be returning!
