Nayland, a village on the River Stour in Suffolk, is set close to the border with Essex, making it perfectly placed for enjoying both counties. Nayland is a very pretty village with over 100 listed buildings..

This is the second time staying here for us and we absolutely love this place.. Arrived to find the log burner had been lit for us which was very welcome due to the cool weather and us being from Australia. The welcome pack of bacon, eggs, butter, orange juice and bread was great and even some chocolate bars. There was literally nothing we had to buy as all things such as washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, washing powder and toilet rolls etc were all in plentiful supply. There was even shampoo and shower gel in the bathroom which saved us a trip to the shops on our arrival. Free wifi and Netflix on the TV was great. The small log burner kept the place toasty warm and was very easy to use with plenty of firewood supplied. There is a heated towel rail in the bathroom also which kept it warm. The bed was really comfortable with plenty of pillows. The owners are very nice and extremely helpful if needed. Overall a great quiet little place to stay for two. Trev & Annie

A quiet but beautiful cottage with everything as expected from a Sykes Holiday cottage only more so with a welcoming starter pack of bacon, eggs, milk and bread, orange juice and butter.. A log burner with plenty of fuel (not used) a very comfortable bed in other words a great cottage and a wonderful location.

Sadly this property is in need of a deep clean.. The shower mat had mould on the underside, there was dust everywhere, the frying pan required a thorough clean before use, the bed pillows were without pillow protectors, there was so many half used items (presumably left by previous guests) in the bathroom cabinet there was little room for our things, the bottom shelf of the stand in the shower was so slimy that we had to place a J cloth on it before putting our shower gels there, the two kitchen food cabinets were grimey, smelt and contained out of date products. I know we all have different standards but compared to the 3 other Sykes properties we have stayed at this was very poor. The floor mats were well worn and constituted a trip hazard; particularly for those with mobility issues. I did not understand the construction of the bed, which we found uncomfortable- again possibly a personal choice issue, below the mattress was recently sawn planks of wood with the edges unsanded and therefore rough. On more than one occasion we scratched ourselves when getting out of bed. I feel that Sykes, for the sake of their excellent reputation, would be well advised to have a good look at this property. I am still happy to recommend Sykes to others but based on our experiences prior to this last holiday.

Apart from the weather which was hot and sunny all of first week and hot and partly sunny on second, Mrs Gray greated us on our arival and had left a welcome pack of essential food to see us through untill we could shop.. The swimming pool was wonderfull and could be used by prior arrangement with Mrs Gray. The cottage was tucked away well secluded near the owners house that was not at all intrusive. the cottage was exceedingly well equiped with a wonderfully comfortable bed. A secluded patio area and BBQ enabled one to sit out for meals either cooked in the cottage or on the BBQ, The only drawback was that the patio didnt get much sun but in order to provide that you would have lost privacy. Mr and Mrs Gray were a delightfull couple who left you alone but were there if needed. All in all a great stay and I cant finish without mentioning the local butchers shop who sell themost wonderfull bresad from a local family bakers, salad stuff and vegitables and the very best quality meat reasonably priced. A quaint old Post Office and a local Pub called the Anchor who serve reasonably priced Pub Food. If you want a relaxing holiday in fabulous surroundings with lots of walks and need only one bedroom then the Cart Lodge is for you and for later in the year a large log burning stove is provided.

Lovely cottage with everything that you need with extras .. Quiet location in a lovely village .Had a great week in the area

June 2018
My wife and I were both in need of some rest & relaxation and despite the somewhat forbidding photograph of the outside of the Cart Lodge we found it to be an excellent rest.. The facilities provided by Mrs Gray far exceeded anything that we had expected (although we didn't take advantage of being able to use the swimming pool - That being our choice). The siting of the cottage is ideal for exploring the areas of Suffolk & Essex, the local pubs offer some good food at sensible process and in the village the local butcher provides excellent home made sausages and burgers in addition to fresh bread milk etc. The main thing is NOT to judge the cottage by the photograph of the outside. The inside is ideal for a restful holiday.

We had an excellent week staying in this cottage.. The weather was perfect and we were able to do several walks and visit a few National Trust properties. The cottage was well equipped and comfortable. The cottage is in a little village with a local butcher 2 doors away. The meat was beautiful. Both the hosts and the butcher's staff were friendly and welcoming. Certainly a place I would recommend to other travellers.

This is an outstandingly equipped one bedroom cottage in a perfect location for touring Constable Country and East Anglia generally, The owners go the extra mile in that the welcome pack far exceeds what you would normally expect.. Fresh milk, fruit and bread, butter, juice, bacon and eggs plus a full range of teas and coffees. Knowing that we came from a hot country the owner had thoughtfully lit the wood burning stove so that the cottage was warm and cosy on our arrival which was a nice gesture. The towels and linens were of high quality. We can absolutely recommend this holiday let. Our only quibble is that the water pressure of instant shower is poor but this would not stop us returning as everything else was first class.

A delightful little holiday home.. It was good for exploring local area. There were walks close by, National Trust properties were only a short drive away as were places of interest in Colchester including the zoo. We appreciated the welcome and hospitality of the owners.

April 2016
The owner was very welcoming and the cottage is in an ideal location for sight seeing, for both Suffolk and Essex with a local pub on the doorstep. The location in the village is extremely quiet, no nuisance noise or traffic; a relaxing, peaceful holiday cottage. The cottage is very well equipped and the wood burner was very efficient. There is a lot to see in the county and some very nice eating out' inns' just a short drive away. The village has a good butchers, a post office and a small shop. I would recommend this cottage to my family and friends.

We were delighted with the Cart Lodge. The setting was idyllic, the property was perfect and we were made to feel very welcome. The Anchor Pub was friendly and literally only 2 minutes walk away, with excellent cider and a friendly welcome. We would also recommend a trip to the local butchers for steaks of exceptional quality! We would definitely recommend the property to others and we are looking forward to a return visit.

November 2010
We totally enjoyed our experience at the lodge. Mrs Gray is very welcoming and had provided breakfast provision in the fridge. The lodge layout is well designed and equiped. We visited the little shops and post office - only down the road. Later we went on to see Melford Hall, which has a connection to Beatrix Potter, but is a lovely property in its own right. We spent a day at Clacton-on-Sea and were surprised how much we loved it - the best vegetarian breakfast (icluded bubble & squeak) was found at one of the cafes along the front. The people were very friendly. Thanks for a great holiday!

October 2010
We really enjoyed our break. Our hosts were very kind and the welcome pack made us feel really welcome. We particularly enjoyed the woodburner as the evenings in October were getting a little chilly. The village is set on the river Stour and the walks were lovely - even in a light drizzle! There was a nice pub, The Anchor Inn just 2 mins walk from the cottage and another The Rose and Crown just a short drive away in Horkesley, which serves the tenderest and tastiest steaks you could dream of!
Mr Rydings

Comfortable and welcoming, lovely area for walking/cycling. Generous welcome pack provided.

September 2010
Host was friendly and welcoming but we were given our privacy. Breakfast provisions in fridge on arrival - a lovely touch. Nayland is an unspoilt, quiet and beautiful village. Went to Melford Hall, which had plenty in it to see and also Flatford in Constable country - truly beautiful. Found a great vegetarian breakfast containing Bubble and Squeak on the seafront at Clacton-on Sea.

September 2010
We had a fabulous time at the 'shack', as we affectionately nicknamed it, especially the walk in shower, wood burner and easy internet access! The little touches of home made honey, fresh bread and butter, milk and bacon on arrival was a real treat! A fantastic time had by all the family!

September 2010
The weather was fantastic in May and the Cartlodge provided a wonderful relaxing base for our holiday, we had our own private area for sitting out, with a BBQ and we had the use of the owners pool. Inside we had all the kitchen equipment you could ever want, a most comfortable bed and a great shower room. The village had all the shops for our food, but the local pub, the anchor, was so good, in it's setting by the river Stour, that we frequented it for a long Sunday lunch and a couple of evening meals too. A wonderful property in the most beautiful village in the Stour Valley; with the most picturesque villages, historic churches, seasides and river estuaries. Interesting olde worlde towns and cities dating back to the Romans. Our hosts made us feel very at home and the welcome pack lasted us nearly all week! On our departure Miriam presented us with a jar of honey from her own bees. Delicious! We would love to return in summer or winter.
September 2010
We had a wonderful stay at cart lodge cottage. There was a lovely welcome pack waiting for us and a lovely friendly smile from the owners. The cottage was cosy and well presented. there was everything you needed even down to slippers and dressing gowns. we had a lovely relaxing holiday and felt relaxed and refreshed. Would love to do a winter holiday there just to be able to use the lovely log burner.

I liked all the little touches such as eggs and bread in the fridge for us so we could have breakfast in the morning. It was a very nice and peaceful location, we did not get disturbed once. The wood burner was amazing and fit the place perfectly. The way the cottage was decorated really gave a feel of the country side and was very homely.
