We were a day later arriving than booked. Received a reply to the text informing the owner of this but subsequent messages were unanswered. This is the first time we have had no in-person greeting from the owner Upon arrival the cottage was cold and took a while to heat up. There were no bath towels provided, only hand towels so we had to had to buy some. We messaged the owner but received no response. Every cottage we have booked before has provided towels as standard. The second television in the bed room has been removed. The property only has one TV but it is a decent size. There were items still in the dishwasher, the wheelie bin was almost full and the floor hadn't been swept very thoroughly; we found pasta, paper and crumbs in the kitchen. The oven could use a deep clean. General maintenance issues such as dead lightbulb, no barbeque as listed, lounge door swollen and didn't close. There is no information folder regarding how to work the oven, dishwasher etc, where and when to put the bin out, stripping bed linen, as is standard in other places. The stairs are quite steep and could be an issue. ***The biggest issue we had is that the property is NOT on a working farm in the countryside but in the middle of a new built housing estate, with houses built right up to the property line behind and to the side - not at all private as the garden is overlooked. The footings were in place for housing in the front over the new road too, but this might help muffle the loud road noise. This is NOT rural surroundings, as listed*** We decided to leave a day early. Good points: The llamas in the small paddock by the gate - very cute! Nicely decorated for Christmas. Central for visiting the area. Good Greek takeaway in the village.

The little extras provided (milk in fridge, tea bags , coffee etc) unexpected and appreciated.. Great base for exploring. A great cottage and credit to the owner. Spotlessly clean and well equiped and furnished. Recommended

The Byre is well equipped, clean, comfortable and spacious - much more so than website images show, especially the downstairs double bedroom and the kitchen.. We really appreciated the reliable Wi-Fi and the outside space too, making good use of the garden furniture on our patio. During our stay in August we had a couple of questions which the owners responded to promptly and helpfully. The farm dogs and Lottie the Llama were very friendly and a big hit with our daughter. The Byre is in a great location for days out to the seaside or to nearby Durham and Newcastle, providing lots of variety for activities.

The cottage was absolutely beautiful and exceeded our expectations and was very clean.. Owner we saw briefly and was friendly. Although aware it was near a busy road we didn’t realise just how noisy it would be. ( We live near a busy city road and are well used to noise but this was really loud.) The farm sold Fireworks all year round which made me nervous. The cottage is right next to a new estate being built so again it was very noisy. We hope that the building work finishes soon for the owners. We chose the cottage as it advertised not for pets. We chose the cottage as my son is allergic to dogs. Unfortunately the long garden was well kept but unclean. To sum up, great cottage which is being let down by road and building works.

We had a lovely stay here.. Good base for Durham, Newcastle & the North East Coast. The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed. Really comfortable beds! Lots of outdoor space & friendly dogs on the farm - a big hit with my sons! Would definitely stay here again if needed accommodation in this area.

A great location just south of Durham and on a regular bus route into town (no 56), countryside walks / public footpaths within easy reach.. Our day of arrival was a chilly one, but the cottage was nice and warm and a fresh bottle of milk in the fridge for that essential cup of tea/coffee. Good TV reception and good Wi-Fi. The A1 is close by and therefore there is traffic noise but it is not that intrusive and after a while you do not notice it. Thermostat on the lounge wall controls the heating, a note to say that the heating is solely controlled by this and not by a timer would be useful and probably save the owners from occupants wasting fuel. We had everything that we needed, the lounge was comfy and kitchen equipment served us well. Beds were fine too. Only two minor gripes about upstairs and both are related to my height - I am not that tall (6'2") but the bathroom mirror over the sink is far too low making shaving difficult and the metal bedframe bar at the foot of the single bed was a nuisance when I stubbed it with my toes. These two minor gripes aside it was a super place to stay, would we return ? Yes indeed we would without hesitation.

The cottage was a nice cottage however it could do with a bit of TLC.. Cleanliness could have been better such things as windows cleaning, skirting boards dusty and showerheads could do with replacing or cleaning. The paintwork in some rooms could also do with refreshing. We did however have an enjoyable stay.

The Byre is a comfortable and well-equipped cottage, set on a farm in County Durham.. The only thing missing is a dishwasher, and the sink for washing-up is small and poky. It is on the outskirts of Coxhoe, a small County Durham town with basic shops and a quirky Italian restaurant. Getting into the city of Durham itself is about a 15 minute drive. It is not in the Yorkshire Dales as your emails implied! Richmond at the bottom of Swaledale is at least a 30 minute drive.

Ideal base for exploring this part of the country.. Durham, Gateshead/Newcastle, Beamish and the coastal footpaths are all within easy reach. The nearby restaurant, The Old Mill, was excellent. Noise from the nearby A1 is mentioned in the write up,and as we visited in the winter was not a problem, but if you are used to a quiet existence, it could be intrusive if bbqing outdoors in summer. The main reason for putting we would not be re-booking is we prefer to try different places each time.

Myself and my 8 year old son stayed here for a week at the end of August 2017. The garden is fantastic for a boy that loves to kick a ball around, plenty of space and even the farm dogs joined in!! The cottage was beautiful with plenty of room. The kitchen had absolutely everything that we needed and was lovely to have a dishwasher with the tablets provided too. The dining area was great & the table was plenty big enough for 6 to sit. I cooked every night and every utensil was provided. The sitting room was very comfortable and cosy, but by no means small. Both bedrooms had lovely comfy beds and both with en suits baths & shower Everything worked & was clean. We were using it for a holiday but also for visiting family & we will definitely be back. There is plenty of things around for the kids to do within about a 30 minute drive. There's a co-op in Coxhoe village, about 5 minutes away, which is ideal. We enjoyed having visits from the farm dogs & chickens!! You can hear some noise from theA1 when sat in the front garden, but the noise certainly doesn't stop you sleeping. Perfect Holiday Cottage

We were there for a week and absolutely loved the space we had! We were welcomed by one of the farm dogs, Monty? He loves playing with footballs and there were plenty in our yard. In the morning the friend brood of 5 chicken greets us and our 6 year old grand daughter was absolutely delighted with the close proximity to the farm animals. The house was well equipped and furnished. Having en suite bathrooms for both bedrooms was great! The location perfect for where we wanted go explore. Even the north east weather cooperated with us! We will keep this place in mind when we next travel that way again.

Lovely cottage on a working farm. Well equipped and comfortable..very helpful, especially with us oldies and out electronic stuff.. BUT despite the triple glazing and thick walls, the traffic noise from H .G V, so was unrelenting. It would have been difficult to sit out during good weather. Pitty as it was a superb place.

A very pleasant cottage with everything you could need for a break in this part of the world. Of particular interest to some will be the very disabled friendly layout. With a bedroom with an en-suite on the ground floor and seperate self contained bedroom and bathroom upstairs this is ideal not only for someone like me who finds difficulty with stairs on a break with my wife, but also for anyone taking a disabled friend or relative on holiday. Wheelchair access is good except, perhaps, to the bathroom downstairs which may mean reversing in. well done at this price, na real find.

My husband, sister and I stayed in this cottage during our recent trip to England. The cottage was beautifully presented and contained everything you would need to wash cook and entertain yourself. It was a great base to explore Durham and walking distance to a couple of very good pubs made eating out easy. A welcome inclusion were the many brochures and especially the road atlas of the local area.

The Byre is situated in a quiet corner, privacy is five stars, easy access to everything you need. First impressions on entering the cottage were, we could move in here permanently! If you have kids, Hall Hill Farm is good, do not get too close to the llamas though, my son did and got a face full of llama spit. Alnwick Gardens is worth a visit.

The cottage itself is beautiful with plenty of outdoor space and outdoor furniture, ideal for families. The farm animals are very friendly and it is the perfect place to take children. We rented the cottage with my parents and found it an ideal location for visiting the coast and countryside being so close to the A1M. Very handy for Durham City, Beamish Museum and Hartlepool Maritime Experience. The farm owners are very friendly and welcoming and the cottage is well equipped though it could do with some coat hooks and more towel rails. I would certainly recommend this cottage to my friends and would try to book it again in the future.

The cottage was very clean and modern and well furnished. Plenty of space and two en-suites made it perfect for a family. The cottage was ideally placed , within a short drive from the AI. We liked the cottage so much- we have already booked a week for next year!

I had a weeks trip to the area on business. As I needed to be in one place for the entire week, I took the chance that a cottage would be more agreeable than a week in a hotel room. I had never rented a cottage before and this proved to turn my business trip into a pleasant holiday! The cottage and the environs were wonderful.

What an unexpected perfect holiday, whilst I was on business. This cozy well appointed cottage rivals any premium hotel. The outside is lovely in its humble used brick exterior, then you walk in the front door and find an inviting, well decorated, comfortable retreat from the world. All in the country village of Coxhoe. The pictures do not do the place justice, and the pictures are very good. All the amenities with top drawer appliances. Comfortable for a family of four, or for two couples as there are two Bedrooms with private ensuite baths. When you arrive, the place is well lit and ready to move in. Very well kept and cleaned. The owners Doug and Rita, will be as invisible or on-the-spot as you require. They are a lovely couple and Rita is available for any need (better than most Hotel maid service). The hard wood floors are a wonderful touch. There is laundry facility in the cottage and Rita even left fresh eggs, toast and butter for the first breakfast before I could get to the market. With the fully equipped kitchen, meals were easily managed. I was on business from the USA to my home office HQ nearby. I am tired of standard hotels and wanted a more comfortable setting. This will now be my home in England's North East. So much to see and do all within 3 to 20 minutes drive. There is so much history in Durham, wide open country all around Coxhoe and many "Harry Potter" film locations within the area. My local colleagues thought I was crazy until they came to the cottage and now they've all requested business cards for friends and other colleagues stay. Best of all was the quiet and picturesque environs of this small farm. If you have a larger group there are two larger cottages just as or more lovely (I took a tour). One can even sleep 9 or more. The price, the style, the features, the surroundings and the quiet were all pleasant surprises to make my business trip the unexpected holiday.
