We really enjoyed our stay at The Byre.. The cottage had been cleaned to a very high standard and from the moment we arrived, we felt comfortable and able to relax. The views and surrounding countryside were truly stunning and it was all on our doorstep! The owners had thought of everything to make the cottage a comfortable, enjoyable and safe place to stay. We wish we had booked a longer visit and we would definitely consider staying there again.

The scenery in the North Pennines is glorious and this comfortable cottage has wonderful views.. As listed, the kitchen is well equipped but small whilst the rest of the cottage is very spacious for three people. There is a large floor standing boiler in the kitchen which gives excellent heating and hot water to both properties but does make things a bit awkward. To find The Byre from the north east just go up Weardale to Lanehead and turn in to the left just after the tractor sign - the listing makes this more complicated than it is. The tea tray was laid out for us on arrival with nice biscuits and there is milk in the fridge, coffee, salt and pepper and stock cubes in the cottage. Wi-fi was sporadic but is good enough for e-mails and finding out about local attractions. The Alston to Penrith road is closed for five weeks so if you plan to go to the Lakes from here you will have to find another way. With excellent double glazing and trees planted along the road traffic noise is reduced but you will hear motor bikes particularly at the weekends and Bank Holidays - they love the Dales and sound like they are coming through the property! The highlight for us was seeing a red squirrel by the garage - first time in a lot of years. The owners are friendly and welcoming but take warmer clothes and rain wear as the weather can be as spectacular as the scenery!

We arrived at the cottage with the intention of exploring the local area during our stay however we found the cottage so comfortable that we hardly ventured out.. We were made most welcome by our hosts and nothing appeared too much trouble. We had a little difficulty in the dark finding the driveway to the cottage where an indication to the close proximity of the drive to the beware tractor sign approaching from the East may have helped us but this in no way distracted us from our 4 days at this delightful residence.

Location ideal both for local walks and for exploring other dales and fells in the area. Area is very quiet and relaxing, but within easy reach of many interesting places - Durham, Bowes Museum, Hadrian's Wall, etc. Cottage exceptionally well-equipped and comfortable. Hosts friendly and helpful but respectful of privacy.

From my first phone contact with the owners we felt really welcomed, and the cottage was just what we hoped. It's well appointed and has a really homelike feel, with books on the shelves, a wood burning stove, and pictures on the walls. There's also a lower bit of garden below the house that you can use in relative privacy. The cottage has a view over upper Weardale, with walks from the door and wonderful bird life and wild flowers all around. We used it as a base for exploring and would return to cosy evening meals and relaxation in the large, comfortable lounge. It's within easy driving distance of Hexham and Corbridge and beyond that the superb Roman sites, Hadrian's Wall and, of course, the North Pennines. All in all I would strongly recommend this to anyone looking for a base for a holiday in the NE, though obviously its position makes a car fairly essential. The owners take real trouble to make sure their guests are comfortable and well provided for.

A very well situated cottage with stunning views and access to quaint little villages and lots of nice walks. We arrived to a very warm and friendly welcome. The accommodation has everything you need to have a comfortable cosy stay. It was very well equipped with a beautiful wood burner and many leaflets with info on the area and surrounding parts. Every detail has been thought of from board games to books. We had a fantastic week in the middle of February it was slightly blustery, which made our stay very warm and cosy indoors enjoying the peace and tranquility which surrounded us. We will most defiantly be back we just embraced the rural living with open arms. :)

Lovely clean and welcoming cottage, helpful hosts who greeted us on arrival. Everything in the cottage you needed to feel home from home, lots of information on things to do in the area. Wonderful area to visit, beautiful scenery and the views from the cottage were amazing. Killhope well worth a visit as was Beamish Museum, a little further afield but worth the drive over the moors.

Lovely, roomy and airy accommodation and quiet location with wonderful views Only one negative point; the bed and pillows were far, far too soft and therefore not comfortable

Friendly, helpful and welcoming owners in a part of the Dales I had never visited and was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it was. Excellent views from the property, peaceful, and was big enough and equipped to a degree that allowed my family to visit for a meal without having to ask them to bring their own cups, and cutlery. I would visit again.

Very relaxing and the owners were very welcoming and helpful. Plenty of wood for the log burner and considering the weather conditions, this was a boon.

November 2012
Very welcoming hosts. The food hamper was great! Comfy and exceptionally clean. Very well equipped, the hosts added little touches like tin foil, food bags, a stock cube and salt and pepper- always the things I forget! Mostly suitable for a little toddler. Travel cot and high chair and a child friendly fire guard provided. We would stay again, it was one of the nicest cottages we have stayed in.
